Sorry to sound harsh here. I did buy a few of Carney's books and they all seem to vary a lot from book to book. The quality of this one was pretty bad as not only are the photos in black and white but grainy, almost xeroxed quality. This was not the only book with that happening and I hope she's upgraded her standards.Additionally, there is no CONTRAST in the lights and shadows so the figures are all basically one color of light grey. For someone who is looking for as much visual info. as possible these might not be for you. The figures appear flat sometimes. Not much variation in body types, all are the industry standard of beauty today, slim white dancers (of all persuasions) with long straight hair.Lastly, many of the poses were uninspiring and cheesy. The book made me wonder who the "audience" for these models are? Some of the poses were suggestive and flirty, with a few pics from one of these books with the models on brass stripper poles. And just not to seem too tawdry one pole that looked like it was made from the white painted wooden beam from an antebellum stairway. Yay.So as a female figurative artist what am I supposed to feel or do with these poses, as they are about my gender? I would like the author to expand her idea of who she thinks the art students are that need these poses.
Here is my assessment of this book and its content:- All the figures presented here are female- All images are in black and white. Some of them have clarity problems, and the paper is not photo-quality, but the author states in his other publications that this is intentional for the purposes of making the book affordableWARNING: My biggest issue with this book is that some of the poses are far too sleazy to be in a book intended for a figurative artist (spread legs, come-hither eye contact, etc.). Some of these could easily be classified as pornographic, which, in my opinion, goes completely against the artistic goal of seeing and portraying the female body as art (which is what I try to do in my own work). Having said this, most of the poses here are elegant and respectful. But the overly sexualized poses taint the book as a whole.Overall, the book is good, but not great. Mr. Malone's book "Nude Dance Poses For Art Students" is, for me at least, far superior (and a very tough act to follow).
This book is disappointing but I'm not surprised given the price. If you are looking for nude pictures of women including spread legs, you will love it. If you are looking for pictures of women to help with proportions and anatomy for line drawings it will suffice. If you are looking for pictures of women with light and shadow to practice tone and shading, you will hate it. I'm a photographer and I draw as a hobby. There is no shadow or form to any of the pictures. A guy with a camera with a flash directly on the camera stood and photographed them straight on. Which means it is harsh straight on light like you would find in paparazzi photos. If the creator had taken is flash and moved it to the left or right there would at least bee some shadow and form for doing a tonal drawing. Also, the print quality is poor, again not a surprise for the price so can't fault that. I am keeping the book since at the price point it is just not worth returning, of course, that may be what the creator was hoping for. At least I can practice proportions and anatomy, though I have no desire to draw women's privates.
I wouldn't buy this book for use in a class (the paper isn't the best (or worst) quality. Too many hands would probably cause some ripping. The photos are just a tad bit blurry but to me that doesn't matter at all. I will be using this book for artistic reference, there is plenty of diversity in the poses. I believe there is another book in this series and I will be picking that one up also. Nude artistic reference books can be quite expensive so I was happy to find this at an extremely reasonable price.
I was expecting more diversity of models. The description and the book introduction both flat about a diversity in models but in reality there's very little deviation from skinny super model body type. There are a few muscular women but no chubby women whatsoever. Not even a little body fat.
Not bad for drawing from but the poses are a bit washed out and the book needs to be a bit bigger
