Illustrating Children's Books: Creating Pictures for Publication, by Martin Salisbury

From School Library Journal

The chapters of this richly illustrated book touch on everything from media, materials, and techniques to design and typography, but the information given is not enough to actually teach the subject. Instead, the author gives readers a brief but interesting overview. For instance, in the chapter entitled "Character Development," Salisbury discusses mannerisms, facial expressions, and child-friendliness of characters, but doesn't tell readers how to actually create these effects on their own. However, this book does a very good job of addressing the many elements of illustration for someone who is unfamiliar with the process. Topics such as "What to illustrate," "Dynamics of composition and layout," and "Type as image" give a more concrete concept of the profession and artistry. The featured artwork is all pulled from children's picture books to demonstrate the concepts in the related text. Some are spot illustrations, a character or scene cut from its background, while others are spreads reduced to fit within the page with accompanying text. Colorful and lively, the illustrative material is indispensable to the content. A fine choice for adults interested in illustration, or as a resource for someone new to discussing art in children's books. - Heather E. If you're interested in illustrated children's books, or any aspect of the illustration process, this book is fascinating.I'd like to write and illustrate some picture books, myself. I'm already an artist and an author, so the combination seems like a good match. However, when I sat down to work on illustrations for a picture book... my mind was blank. What do children look for in illustrations? What's important... and what's a wasted effort? This book answered those questions for me.I especially like the examples throughout this heavily illustrated book. You'll see early sketches, works in progress, and completed illustrations from many different artists. You'll learn the history of illustrations for children, and pick up important tips for drawing children and animals.Several chapters focus on different kinds of media for illustrating, including black-and-white work, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, and more. You'll learn about picture books as well as illustrating children's book, and designing illustrations for older children's books, as well. History books, poetry books... all kinds of topics are covered.Cover design is included, alphabets and fonts are featured, and you'll learn about design as well as the publishing process. This book is kind of a whirlwind of information, a little about every aspect of illustrating children's books. If you're looking for a step-by-step, "first you draw a circle for the head" kind of book... this isn't that. However, if you want a rich overview of illustrating and children's books - as an author, illustrator, or someone who shares books with children -- this book is a must-read, and possibly a must-own. You'll see where your own strengths are, and where you may want to stretch yourself and acquire additional information and skills.

... I recently interested a prime New Zealand publisher in the idea of a book for intending children's book illustrators that would not only explain why but how to do it. The techniques, I told him; that's what most people leave out. Let's interview award-winning illustrators and ask them about the different techniques they employ and what materials and techniques they employ. Then a friend got a present from America: Illustrating Children's Books by Martin Salisbury. As soon as I saw it I knew someone had got there first and done it right. I immediately ordered two copies: for a mentee who has just completed her first children's picture book (Am I Precious? by Belinda McCallion. Bibli-Cool, 2014) and for my artist-daughter, A. Brice, whose first foray into the picture book world saw Haere Ra, Harry! by Kathy Berger Sewell was shortlisted for a Notable Book of the Year abroad. It is such involved creators that Salisbury writes for. Here is a book that is a perfect match of content and format with its intention and execution. Come to think of it, I need my own copy... I'd like to formally congratulate both author and publisher on what they have achieved - exactly what was wanted! I had no hesitation in clicking on each of those five stars.

This book was published in the early 2000s, and while it has a good deal of information that is still pertinent to book illustration today, the sections on technology are laughably out-of-date (e.g., reference to zip discs and Quark). It does mention dozens of illustrators that you can look up and research further, but due to its age, it doesn't mention any of my recent favorites, like Jon Agee, Christian Robinson, David Roberts, Emma Yarlett or Oliver Jeffers. Also, if you're already an experienced artist, be aware there's a good chunk of the book devoted to art materials and methods that may or may not be a re-hashing of things with which you are already familiar. That said, the layout of the book makes skipping ahead easy, and it does cover things I wasn't expecting, like illustrating non-fiction, as well as things I did expect, like laying out spreads and examples of unique ways to pair pictures with text. It also includes a good amount of info on how to submit your work to publishers. In all, worth buying but it's time for the author to create an updated second edition.

Besides a cover that I find irresistible, this book contains a lot of useful information for someone who wants to illustrate a children's book. I appreciate the author legitimizes the use of computers in one section while bringing into high relief the traditional mediums in others. It doesn't go in depth about computer art, nor would it be up to date in 2014 if it had (the copyright date was a decade ago.) I use digital brushes (Carlyn Beccia's book on Digital Painting is more useful there, for example.)This one contains beautiful and interesting case studies. I personally like a lot of the visual examples described, which drew me to the cover in the first place and made it interesting to go behind the scenes on a lot of them. The book feels like it provides "something for everyone", whether your style is whimsical or realistic. Lots of pictures break up the text and the book manages to convey a lot in a well organized and concise way. Tends to be more broad than deep. It was definitely useful for not overwhelming someone dipping their toe in children's illustration and still gave meaty insight. I like reading about how technology is shaping art, despite varying attitudes toward traditional versus digital media out there. I wish there were more books out there that embraced digital art as a form or expounded on how it is influencing the landscape of children's book illustrations. Maybe it is so new that they have yet to be written...overall, this one is great for tips, techniques and case studies showing a variety of art forms: wood blocking, ink, paint, water colors, etc. Definitely something I will refer to often. A good "survey course".

This is a wonderful, wonderful book! It exceeds my expectations. The writing, pictures, and even the paper quality are all high. I bought a used book but to my surprise I received the book with the author’s signature. What lovely surprise!

Like another reviewer, this book was not entirely what I expected, since I glossed over the part which said that it was "A Guide to Gechnical Terms" suggesting a dictionary. The book is arranged entirely on an alphabetical listing of terms relating to pre-Guttenberg illustrated books. What was surprising, and possibly a bit "putting offish", is that the entries cover a wide range of material, roughly divided into the areas of 1) Bookbinding techniques, 2) Symbols painted on the pages and 3) Historical information about major Illuminated manuscripts. It is this variety which makes the book suitable for reading cover to cover. You never know what you don't know, or what may be relevant. I'm sure there are books which cover these three subjects individually. I was expecting that the book would cover the symbology and heraldry of the illustrations, but I welcome the others. If you have NO books on illuminated manuscripts, then I suggest this one. If you have lots already, this one may be too shallow. It is certainly a good "first book" on the subject.

127 pages, 60 color illustrations. This is one of the most beautiful books about illuminated manuscripts I know. The layout of the entries, the explanatory notes, and the many (mostly) color illustrations make this book a very handy and synoptic handbook.Because the editor planned an edition of rather moderate dimensions, some sacrifices had to be made. The rather important production of illuminated manuscripts by the Islamic world and far east countries like China and Japan are not included. I even wonder if they should have been included because the technical terms are more than sufficiently illustrated by the West-European examples. After all this is not an art history-book with an exhaustive intellectual content.Everyone with an interest in the Middle-Ages of western Europe should have this book in his library. A lot of technical terms provide also some insight in medieval society. I would like to give an example. An excerpt from the notes for the entry 'Breviary': "...From the eleventh century on, the various volumes used during the Divine Office (psalter, antiphonal, lectionary, martyrology, and others) were combined to form the breviary which was initially only used by monks but was popularized - in a slightly abridged form - by the Dominicans and Franciscans in the 13th century...."It's beautiful, it's interesting. What more can I say?

I found this title in the bibliography of the free online paleography course InScribe (historyspot.uk.org), and highly recommend the book and InScribe. (InScribe has an interactive transcription tool for multiple medieval hands. It is not "finished," but what is available is great.)The book is a thin, sturdy, paperback Getty book first printed in 1994. It is arranged like a dictionary and has tiny color reproductions that are well-chosen, lovely examples of dictionary entries. A calligrapher, I find the book quite useful. Entries include writing and illuminating, liturgical, and Western (not Hebrew or Islamic) cultural terms. Examples, unfortunately, are too tiny for me to copy.

While I realize that the book is a guide to technical terms, you need to know what they are on a manuscript first before you can look it up! Think of it like a dictionary for manuscripts, if you're looking at a manuscript described as an octavo, you can look it up and find the definition in this book. On the other hand, if you're looking at a manuscript and have no idea what an element on the page is called, you're out of luck.I was hoping the book would be a breakdown of manuscripts by their parts in a more educational formats, but alas, that is not the case. This book is for you if you have the technical terms presented to you and you are needing the definition. That said, it's got great information and wonderful illumination examples inside. I'll be keeping the book anyway.

This beautifully appointed book should serve the perfect guide for all but the most adnaced students in the field. Terms are explained in concise and understandable terms and appropriate images are provided in beautiful colored photographs.

This little volume provides brief definitions of all the important phrases and terms used in the study of illuminated manuscripts including forms, techniques, themes, and periods.Great for understanding the differences between an historiated initial and an inhabited initial - or between an antiphonal and a gradual. Most of the representative images are in color and are well chosen to illustrate the definitions. Perhaps their only drawback is their small size due to the size limitations of the book itself.A great companion while reading to "Medieval Illuminators & their Methods of Work" by Jonathan J.G. ALexander or "A History of Illuminated Manuscripts" by Christopher De Hamel.

I am interested in medieval manuscripts

Very informative and my copy, though used, is like new! I'm very pleased with this purchase!

While it contains useful information and some interesting suggestions, the book needs an update.

VERY USEFUL AND RECENTLY UPDATED - 5th EDITION [2004]IN A NUTSHELL:This a very useful travel guide for local families with children, families visiting for the day, weekend, summer or winter. It is useful for families looking for fun attractions, places to eat, places to stay, shop or just plain out see things. The key here is family travel and fun.HOW TO USE THIS BOOK:The book is organized by region [5] within Indiana making eight separately organized touring regions. Other books in this series have seperated the major cities, making them into touring regions of their own, but this book includes Indianapolis in the "Central Region".Each region has a chapter that begins with; "TOP PICKS". Ten interesting destinations and their phone numbers. A MAP OF the "Southern Indiana" region is on the 2nd page of this chapter and on each of the following chapters the same organization continues with a regional road MAP following the "TOP TEN PICKS".Following the map, the "TOP TEN PICKS" plus many more attractions are detailed covering an average of forty pages per region. At the end of each region's chapter there is a hard-to-miss page titled "ANNUAL EVENTS" which is formatted very much like the "Top Picks" that begins each chapter. "ANNUAL EVENTS" aids in the planning stage so that your excursion may be as well timed and fun-filled as possible. If there is one weakness here, it is the lack of discrimination between the interesting destinations and the world-class destinations. You will have to figure that out for yourself. It is difficult to know which park is best for you and your family and of course which accomodations and/or meals. However, this is generally a personal choice. You will find an extensive "ATTRACTIONS KEY" which aids the reader to quckly see all the ammenities any given attraction has to offer. The format outline above is repeated for the five distinct regions in equal detail. There is alot to go through and you can do it quickly and effectively with this guide. As concise and useful as one can expect for so convenient and portable a travel guide. This 5 th edition is brand new for 2004 and represents the second edition of this book written by Margaret Gisler.

Book is divided into five areas: central, western, eastern, northern, and southern. I found it easy to locate places to go based on region. Book also includes places to eat and stay.
