About the Author

Marcella Wells is President of Wells Resources, Inc. a woman-owned, small business that specializes in interpretive planning, visitor studies, and project management. Founded in 2000, Wells Resources works with federal, state, and local land management agencies, informal learning settings (museums, nature centers, arboreta, etc.) and non-profit organizations as an advocate for visitors an informal learning. Before founding the company, Marcella was a faculty member in the College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University where she mentored graduate students and taught several courses in interpretation, interpretive planning, environmental education, and leisure studies. She is past Vice President of the Visitors Studies Association, current member of AAMÂ’s Education Committee (EdCom), and Steering Committee member for the Children and Nature Connection in Fort Collins, Colorado. MarcellaÂ’s recent clients include the National Park Service, Adirondack Museum, Bureau of Reclamation, Colorado State Parks, Denver Museum of Natural History, National Park Service, royal British Columbia Museums, Walking Mountain Science Center, and numerous other public, private and non-profit organizations. In 2012, Marcella was awarded the Enos Mills Lifetime Achievement Award for the Colorado Alliance for Environment Education.Dr. Barbara ButlerÂ’s academic credentials include a BA in biology from Millikin University, Decatur, IL; an MA in anthropology from the State University of New York at Buffalo; and a Ph. D. in anthropology from Southern Methodist University, Dallas, TX. Barbara taught at North Texas State University, Denton, TX and the University of Delaware, Newark, DE before becoming the director of the Delaware Museum of Natural History. In 1990, she joined the staff of the Informal Science Education program at the National Science Foundation as program director of Informal Science Education and section head of the Science Literacy Section. Her tenure there was 10 years. Barbara has been active in Visitor Studies Association since the early 1990Â’s, serving two terms on the board, chair of the Albuquerque annual meeting local arrangements committee, and as chair of the VSA professional development committee.

Since retirement she has consulted with a number of informal learning organizations including the Japanese Friendship Garden, San Diego, CA; Biodiversity Project, Madison, WI; Chicago Botanic Garden, Chicago, IL; The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Garden, Pasadena, CA; and the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta, Wilmington, DE, among others. She also serves on the board for the Placitas Artists Series, a local organization that provides chamber music, visual art, and a school outreach program in southern Sandoval County, New Mexico.Judith M. Koke is the Richard and Elizabeth Currie Chief, Public Programming and Learning at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Previously she was the Director, Education and Interpretive Programs at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri. Koke served as an instructor for the University of Toronto’s “Museum Interpretation and Meaning-making” class in 2010 and 2011, and as an instructor in “Visitor Research and Evaluation” at George Washington University in Washington D.C. She was previously a Senior Researcher for the Institute for Learning Innovation, where she did a nationwide study of all IMLS-funded youth programs. She was also the evaluator at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science for seven years, where she managed visitor studies and evaluation.

This was a required text in grad school for me but the book is a great resource and reference tool. Along with the accompanying workbook, I used the principles in this book to help me build a distance learning program at an educational museum institution.

I have to have this book for an MPA class. Hard to follow, I am on page 127 and all I really know is SP will not work if everyone doesn't embrace it and there must be a clear vision, an agreement on purpose and mission statement.I hope it gets better, This could have been done with a checklist and a pamphlet.The writer will tell you several times in the book that from their other book...also, there are several typos that I caught and I suck at English, unfortunately, this is becoming more common in textbooks. One that you may need is that it references a website HubertProject.com it is actually HubertProject.ORG

The workbook many process guidance of how to thank about the tailoring process, which provide more detail clearly and not hard to read.

This textbook is terribly done. There has been a Harvard project on the same topic that describes the planning process for nonprofits in three stages - Bryson uses eight. There is also a Herrington Bryce textbook that has been praised and that is readily available.If you are considering this text for your use, I would strongly recommend one of the others; if your professor has assigned this, beg him or her to choose another. This is an overcomplicated repetitive mess of a manifesto on Bryson's self-important and overcomplicated view of what should be a straightforward topic. And it is sheer pain to read.- Bryson is verbose and overcomplicates everything - He would cite five sources to tell you the sun has risen, just so you would know that he is well-read . . . he never uses 50 words when he can use 500 or better yet 1,000. That makes this a really tough read. Bryson never heard that brevity is the soul of wit.- This book is incredibly repetitive - he seemingly does not have a lot of faith in his reader, so he says everything five times. His lack of respect for the reader goes so far as to tell you how to set up a room for a meeting, how to cover use a dry erase board and easel paper, and just to be helpful he even includes a template of an oval for you to use in making ovals to post during your meeting. A blank page in the book with a black outline of an oval. I wish I were kidding. Bryson doesn't have a lot of respect for the rest of us.- He is a terrible writer. His paragraphs are lengthy and disjointed. His constant citing of sources is ludicrous. He is one of those people in the world who can't just say what he has to say, he has to make everyone think he's smarter than they are. But if he were somewhat smarter, he'd have had the insight to make this book actually readable.- Bryson seems to be a classic example of a consultant with no real-world experience. He barely covers leadership, a pretty important topic, but in addition to his helpful advice on ovals and easel paper, he does discuss the uses of dishonesty and selective disclosure in the planning process, but in such a throw away manner that all you can get is how clever he wants you to think he is.- He proselytizes incessantly. Bryson spends a lot of effort on his view of how one should achieve transcendence (really! - you can't make this up!) while making numerous and repetitive political statements against conservatives, corporate interests and a variety of others.I realize that most of you will be buying this book because you have to, as it will have been selected for you by your professor. Beg your professor to choose another text. There are several much better ones out there. Plead. Do whatever it takes. This is the one of the worst books I have ever encountered. It is truly terrible and extremely frustrating.

I have all of Martha Stewart's cookbooks, so I was pretty excited when this one arrived.Some of the other reviewers have gone in great detail about the exact recipes etc., so I won't bore you with that.What I love about this cookbook (as with the rest of her cookbooks) are:1) a photo for each recipe! I really dislike cookbooks that have a recipe and no photo, particularly for desserts. after all, i want to know what it is going to look like.2) very clear, concise, and reliable directions.3) it's very clearly organized (both the cookbook and each recipe)4) a short blurb on the top for each recipe giving you tips/pointers5) excellent step-by-step photos/directions in the back of the book for making pate sucree or pate brisee or puff pastry.I trust Martha Stewart and know she will not put her name on a recipe unless it has been tested over and over.She hasn't failed met yet!First pie I made was chocolate cream pie. Yes, it's a novice pie, but I have a 3 yr old so I wanted a crowd pleaser (or rather a kid-pleaser). Easy to follow directions for the crust, filling and whipped topping. It was absolutely delicious and looked professional. Pie was finished by my guests.Second thing I made was the fruit tart. Rather than do the mini tarts, I did two nine-inch tarts (and she has notes in case you want to do a lot of mini ones or larger 9-inch tarts). Made the pate sucre, made the vanilla pastry cream the day before (my husband and kids licked the spoon from that!) and assembled it a few hours before serving. Beautiful, delicious and I was so pleased with the results.I highly recommend this cookbook, and with her clear instructions, beautiful photos and wide assortment of crowd-pleasing recipes, I know this will be one I will be referring to over and over. Wow. I was looking for a great pie book or two, and passed this one over at first because, Martha Stewart, boring, right? But after buying / looking at several newer, blogger-style, seasonal, artisan, pie-goddess type books and not liking them at all, I ordered this book because it was inexpensive and I thought it might be a good reference. OMG, I love it! There are so many recipes that I'm dying to make, it's hard to decide where to start. The photos are gorgeous, and the instructions are clear and simple. Most recipes are very straight-forward and look like they will be easy to execute. I'm thrilled with this book and not even looking at another.

I'm sure this is a perfectly fine cookbook for someone but it wasn't the one for me. I have the cookie one like this and love it but returned this one the same day it arrived. I just want classic pies with a few new fangled things thrown in.

I was THRILLED to see this book arrive as I am a " cake and bread baker" and in my yrs of baking,,,,, I can probably count the number of pies I have made on one hand~Shameful ,,,,and I considered myself a "baker"?? I have made it a priority this year to bake favorite pies for birthdays , home celebrations , picnics and potlucks ~ I thought it was high time I face this challenge head on . I bought tiny pie tins for the children's pies after picking a load of apples from our small orchard I do think the addition of fruit in many pies/tarts has a healthier edge than heavy layer cakes which I had made for so many years~ and of course, one can control the sweetness~I was pleasantly surprised at the ease of the first tart I made which was the peach and berry tart.( First chapter) It is easily made up in only a few minutues, then baked~I baked this for DH to take to a men's breakfast at church ~It was so pretty that someone said it looked more like decoration than dessert! And it was my FIRST tart! But the TASTE was even better!( he saved a piece for me) I did use the called for addition of cornmeal to the tart crust and it did have a great flavor in an all fruit tart which is now my favorite tart!The tart looked GORGEOUS and made it look like I was an expert pie baker , I can assure you I am not! I did things a bit different tho, and I am assuming for the most part a lot of the pies are subject to individual taste~ I made this in an 8" tart pan( because it looked prettier!) and added a few nectarines in w/ the peaches, which made for an excellant taste~I DID however have to add more than double sugar suggested, and I do not have a huge sweet tooth , so maybe the fruit pies are way way under the sweetness range for me?? But perhaps not for you~I have had tarts in Europe and do realize that they do use less sugar all the way around except for maybe Austria or Germany?I had to double the amount of time baking this tart even tho my oven temp is spot on,, I did have some pie covers that I had collected( and never used!) that I topped over the very crust so the top would not get burned,,,,,so far,,so good,,,I think this is all part of the learning curve for me b/c the apple pies and pumpkin pies came out perfect as per recipe in the book.I won't give a whole list of the pies, other reviewers have been kind enough to do so,,but I will say as my confidence in pie making grows I will be happily baking those birthday PIES this year ~ my favorite is mile high lemon,,,,,DH, cherry pie from our own trees. I am hoping to look up to see if I can freeze a pie unbaked) so I can have a fresh pie to go when we have people over for a quick brunch or dinner, I have heard this can be done but will have to look at this further has anyone done this successfully I wonder?)I cannot see how any baker could be bored with this book , it is a gorgeous COLLECTION of many pies one can bake and the photograpy is stunning~( so you can see just how your pie is to look finished! Some of us NEED this.... which is often missing in cookbooks or e recipesI like inspiration, and to see what I can bake w/ what I happen to have on hand in any particular season ,as I said, we grow a lot of berries and cherries that I used to freeze for toppings to cakes which is kind of sad now that I think of it~ While I work my way thru the pie book I will be careful to taste fruits and berries, and even cremes so I am certain they are up to my taste levelI do think that it will only be a taste thing with the fruit tho~Only one problem,,,,,THE famous " Elegant Farmer Pie" baked in a brown bag which has been on cooking shows to compete with) has never been duplicated w/ accuracy yet!I know, I live a few miles from where they make this great pie but I am sure going to look it up on the net.Love love love the book! My husband is also happy, because it is true,many people are pie lovers first and cake lovers second~ One big disclaimer here,,,,I do NOT eat much sugar , I my eat pie maybe 3 times a year?? But I LOVE to bake and bake I do,,,,,for others!This book is a very good thing~

I especially like the illustrations that accompany the instructions for making dough in a food processor. The instructions show what the dough should look like at every stage of the process. This book is well worth the price, and then some.

This is a great activity book to get your child prepared for a trip to Yellowstone. What is great is that it helps with the vocabulary of what your child will find in Yellowstone. My daughter was 8 years old when she did these books leading up to our trip last summer. They made for a more meaningful experience in the parks. She knew that she wanted to see Grand Prismatic Springs before I even knew where it was on the park map.

We haven't left for our trip yet, but just flipping through the book it looks really cute. There is a section at the bottom of each page for kids to check off if they saw the animal, plant or landmark that is featured on the page. There is also a few lines for them to write about it.I think my 6 year old will be able to read most of it on her own, with a little help with some of the bigger words.

We went out West in June 2017 and loved it. I gave this book to our 10 year old son and he enjoyed using it. His favorite thing was seeing the animals and of course Grand Prismatic since it is on the cover of the book. After we returned home, I found a puzzle of it at a local store that was closing. Happy boy!

Our five year old loved this book. She doesn't read unassisted yet, but the pictures are so good that she recognized landmarks without me having to point them out.

My daughter completed this entire book as we visited Yellowstone this summer. It was exciting to see her check things off her list. I'd highly recommend for kids if you are visiting the park.

My children enjoyed learning about all the different animals and sights they might see in Yellowstone. What fun to wrap up each day recording their memories and what they saw in the park! The photographs in the book are beautiful and the layout of the book is very readable and kid friendly. This is a must purchase for any family visiting Yellowstone National Park!!

Jim Finley is like a glacier, with only a little bit protruding above, but untold depths beneath the surface. I loved how succinct Finley is in this book. His writing is beautiful, packing a great deal into a sentence. I found “Merton’s Palace of Nowhere” to be an exceptional summary of Merton. Merton is hard to summarize, but Finley pulls it off because he shares the spacious non-dual mind of Merton, who was his mentor at Gethsemane Abbey. Probably my favorite line from the book… “Prayer never touches us as long as it remains on the surface of our lives, as long as it is nothing but one more of the thousands of things that must be done. It is only when prayer becomes ‘the one thing necessary’ that real prayer begins (pg. 17).”-Amos Smith (author of Healing The Divide: Recovering Christianity's Mystic Roots)

You won't get a wordy scholarly discussion from me. No need to overstate or embellish. This book is a treasure of simple direct thought. I've been reading Merton for years. He fits very comfortably beside my Buddhist texts, writings on the Tao, and the Chinese mountain poets. I find Merton's unique synthesis of insights from Christianity and Eastern thought to be true sustenance. I read and re-read Merton and use this particular commentary as a support to morning meditation. Merton's view is fresh and powerful... His teachings ring with gentle truth. Here, James Findley's loving condensing of Merton's core teaching is a true Gift. Brief... but rich. Authoritative...but intimate. This is a wonderful book.

I found that this book offers a solid core point that I could grasp: we are naked and nothing creatures, so we are constantly tempted to make our selves something, creating a false self. God wants us to be our true self, which starts at being one who is loved by him (something we cannot create, but just receive).There are other points around this main point that at times I could grasp, but these points mostly seemed ethereal. I need to read this book a few more times before I'll grasp these points.So I recommend the book to those who've been on the spiritual formation journey for a while, but I would not recommend it to people just starting out. A better book to start with would be Brennan Manning's book, "Abba's Child" in which Manning does cite Merton a few times. "Abba's Child" basically makes the same point as this book, but in a much more accessible way.

This review is on the Kindle edition. The book is excellent and is a must read for any person interested in Thomas Merton's spirituality. I have read many of Merton's books, and I could have used Finley's incites in all of them.Now the Kindle edition. The navigation is nearly non-existent. This would not be an issue if the book was reduced in price, but it isn't. There are numerous citations in the text referring to the expansive bibliography and notes. Hit any of them and all you will do is advance to the next page or return to the previous page.The book also has no formal Table of Contents, but considering that Finley chose not to title the sections and chapters, a formal Table of Contents would have limited use. I do wish that Finley would have titled the sections and chapters, he certainly organized the information well enough.I rate my book reviews on their content, not their navigation.

If you feel as if you’re reading the same Christian monologue over and over with every book you read, it’s time to move on to Finley. This is the advanced class (a class that teaches you that this thing called obedience is less work than we ever imagined, but that is just the beginning of the journey). This book in addition to Christian Meditation changed my life and the way I think about God and how to gain true presence with Him. Reading it in the morning during quiet time is how I best recommend it.

I can't recommend this book enough for those interested in gaining a solid foundation from which they can build a genuine spiritual life. I have a master's degree in divinity from a Catholic seminary and wish I'd found this book a lot sooner. It's not a new book, published in 1978, but is truly timeless in the truths it so clearly reveals in such an orderly and readable manner. Thomas Merton, I'm sure, is very happy with this humble, gentle and powerful synthesis of his teaching. Basically Mr. Finley clarifies the tremendous danger of creating false images of ourselves that trap us in our spiritual growth, the goes on to help us free ourselves from these "idols". By humbly emptying ourselves of self images and meaningless self-serving, egoistic obsessions we can discover our true self rooted in and saturated by the person of Christ, our true self. I'd personally recommend accompanying this book with a practice of Centering Prayer (check out centeringprayer.com or .org).. The combination of the two could turn your spiritual life around for the better.

I would agree with the other reviewer that this book is the most rewarding book I have read to date. I'd been interested in reading Merton and learning about his thought for years since so many of my spiritual "mentors" were themselves "mentored" by Merton. But he was so prolific and so deep I wasn't sure where to start and was looking for a kind of "Merton for Dummies" book! This book is that and so much more.Sometimes people's gift is in creative, original thought (Merton in this case). And sometimes people's gift is to be able to understand another's thoughts/teaching and to synthesize them into a coherent whole. This is Finley's gift. I don't know that I've ever read such a well laid out book that took me bit by bit in a logical order through a complex subject allowing me to safely arrive at the end (where if you'd tried to start me there I might have misunderstood it).I can't highly recommend this book enough if you are interested in spirituality.

The premise of this book is very misleading. I’m honestly not sure how this happened. It seems that the authors are very empathetic to the needs of LD/ADHD students, yet, there is nothing in this book that will actually help those students.Learning Outside the Lines provides information on some basic study skills which would be very useful for those students that have never learned to study. Where I went to high school most-all of these were taught to us alongside the same tactics the authors deride (“Just study harder,” etc.). These are the same sorts of things you’ll be able to find doing a simple Google search for: “How to study well” (or) “how to become a good student,” things like: learning to compartmentalize assignments for greater manageability and maximizing information retention from textbook readings. The authors do make a point of allowing readers options to “individualize” their studying and education and to ‘take what works for you, burn the rest’ but will any of this actually specifically help someone with LD/ADHD? No.What this book does contain is solid but there’s nothing in this book that doesn’t apply equally well to non-LD/ADHD people. The personal accounts, yes. The actual information, tips and guides, no. It seems to, almost, take for granted that the reader has, somehow, overcome their disability (and past/emotional relationship to school) and is now, in college, ready to begin as if they were never LD/ADHD and merely need to learn “how” to study. There’s not one bit of information on how the ADHD students who, according to the epilogue, could hardly even stand still into their 20s, managed to actually do the reading (skimming, it seems this book so frequently advises), the outlining, the research and the classroom participation required to follow this advice in the first place. There’s hardly any explanation for how a dyslexic student who couldn’t write until junior high became an Ivy League honors English Major, and much less any sort of “process” that could help others with different disorders follow in his footsteps. It’s as if in their climbing the ladder of education, now trying to help others up, they’ve forgotten the bottom rungs exist.

Last December I was a college student with ADHD without hyper activity (formerly known as ADD) convinced that I would be expelled from school due to my grades. Try as I might I have never done well at school- no matter how hard I try I seem to come up short. I literally was considering the unthinkable to avoid the embarrassment of failing out of college and to end all the pain. A wonderful professor saw my struggle, sat me down and let me cry. Afterwards, she handed me this book to read over winter break. It was as if the authors had seen my life from inside my head. This book was exactly what I needed to revive me and give me the courage to face my challenges. As it turns out I didn't even need to worry about my grades but my worry had blown things out of proportion With Learning Outside the Lines in hand I came back to campus in January with a new outlook on my life.

The most valuable element of this book is simply the theme of "empowerment" that is woven into every story and chapter. Jonathan and David tell their stories, in a raw and honest fashion. They point out problems with the general education system that leave struggling students to believe that THEY are the problem. Of course, Jonathan and David dispel many of these myths.They include a pretty thorough description of effective study techniques. My only wish is that there was a "cheat sheet" summarizing a list of all of the strategies for specific learning situations. You have to weed through a lot of story-telling and description to find the strategies. Don't get me wrong, the stories and explanations are VERY important. It's just a bit challenging to find the Action Plan. Nonetheless, this is a great resource.I found many useful tips, but I mostly appreciated the author's perspectives, often captured in interesting sound bites:- Referring to study skills as "Power Tools"- Explaining how to "unpack the lecture" in order to take good notes- They are frank, but they are real: "Most study skills presented by teachers operate under the assumption that all teachers can lecture well."- They are practical, endorsing what they call "Pragmatic personal learning."- They emphasize efficiency: "Cover-to-cover reading is NOT the way to go..."I am an expert in this field, and I am a big fan of this book! (By the way, it's GREAT for ALL students, not just students with ADHD/LD.)

Awful! Nothing happened throughout 20 stories. Imagine listening to many distant aunts or a few effeminate uncles with deep grudges and endless "stream of consciousness" voices: shaggy dog stories with no purpose and too much info. This book has no sense of achievement, except the judges voted for another year of the women. A typical accomplishment in these stories is a female author describing how some guy talks compassionately with his son while his wife listens and *cleans!* One of the "stories" is really just an old lady describing details of three different houses she lived in. Of one she says, "I can't believe I lived there." Readers won't either. O. Henry told stories that were zippy and ironic, so it's sad when his award becomes a poetry prize for boring-character driven plots and social causes. One of the judges said, "In 12,000 words [the first chapter] manages to include all the large, small, secret, shameful, silly, gorgeous, and terrible parts of life." Is that what you want from a 40-page story? I prefer 10 pages with at least one memorable thing. This book helps you sympathize with those who want to clean the swamp and make things happen again. The 2010 edition I recently re-read was good. If I had time for literary experiences, I wouldn't want them in a short story anthology.

One of the finer collection of short stories I have read in some time. Recommended read. Interestingly sequenced. Exceptionally written.

This series is new to me, but I will buy each new volume. Great stories that capture the imagination.

A wonderful collection of stories. Some are slower than the rest but all of them engage the reader. It seems they’re all centered around humans and how messy our lives really are. Few clean breaks can be found and stories rarely end where you think they will.

These O. Henry Prize story collections are great for discovering new writers; I often pick up books by the writers whose stories I particularly liked. It's always a worthwhile read, though with each year, my enjoyment varies depending on how my taste lines up with the jurors'.The only way I know to review and rate these collections is by the number of stories that left a strong impression on me. The 2018 edition had five stories that wowed me -- about on par with other editions -- and nearly all the stories were worthwhile.Some high points for me: Jo Ann Beard's “The Tomb of Wrestling,” a favorite of two of the jurors, in which a home invasion sparks recollections from a woman's past; Michael Parker's “Stop ‘n’ Go,” a brief but bracing piece that follows the frank reminiscences of a World War II vet; Mark Jude Poirier's “How We Eat” (perhaps the most memorable story for me) -- two siblings help their mother scrounge for money for lunch while trying to avoid her anger; Michael Powers' “More or Less Like a Man,” in which a man, hoping to avoid a conversation with a stranger on an airplane, becomes drawn to her story; Jo Lloyd's “The Earth, Thy Great Exchequer, Ready Lies,” an evocative story of empire building that takes an unexpected turn.One caveat: Three stories, though well-written and engaging, were from the "Life is Miserable" school of fiction writing. As I get older, I appreciate these types of stories less and less.I liked that only two of the stories are from the New Yorker. Other collections of prize-winning stories have had as many as a quarter of the stories from the NYer, so if you are a subscriber, you've already read 1/4 of the book.

This collection is guaranteed to be good, and I was thrilled when I received a review copy, thanks to Net Galley and Doubleday. Those that enjoy strong fiction should buy it and read it, even if you have to pay full jacket price. This year’s edition holds 20 prize winning stories along with a bit of judging commentary at the end. This book is now for sale.The first story in any short story collection is bound to be good, and so I knew that Joanne Beard’s Tin House would be strong, and it is, in a dark, surreal way. I wouldn’t read it at bedtime lest it enter my dreams, but it’s memorable, original, and gritty. I also enjoy Brad Felver’s Queen Elizabeth, and Past Perfect Continuous, by Dounia Choukri. My favorite of all of them, the one that made me laugh out loud, is Why Were They Throwing Bricks, by Jenny Zhang, a story that features a cagey, manipulative Chinese grandmother and the grandchildren whose lives she enters, leaves and reenters. Zhang appears to have mostly published poetry up to this point, but I hope she writes more fiction, because I want to read it.The only aspect of any short story that I don’t enjoy is the open-ended sort that conclude with no real resolution. This screamingly frustrating inclination is minimal here, showing at the ends of a just a couple of the featured stories.Short stories are terrific to leave, once you’ve finished them, in your guest room, because people that stay with you briefly can read a story or more without the frustration of having to either leave an incomplete novel behind or beg to borrow it, not knowing when they can return it. If you need an excuse to get this excellent collection for yourself, there it is.Highly recommended.

He was a Fellow and Tutor in English Literature at Oxford University until 1954, when he was unanimously elected to the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Cambridge University, a position he held until his retirement. His most distinguished and popular accomplishments include Out of the Silent Planet, The Great Divorce, The Screwtape Letters, and the universally acknowledged classics The Chronicles of Narnia. For a long time, I toyed with the idea of ordering the paperback edition but was put off by the many negative reviews concerning the binding, printing and paper. I even tried to get the paperback book at my public library but all they had was the hardcover edition so I took that out and found it well, big! I returned the library book after only a cursory glance, and having already read a paperback edition of Mere Christianity a couple of dozen times considered buying some individual editions of Lewis' other works. Still, the cost and logistics of acquiring a stack of "regular size" paperbacks was not attractive. What to do?Finally, I decided to take the plunge and ordered a "Very Good" copy of the hardcover edition from one of Amazon's "Prime" vendors. Okay, I'm cheap but hey, less expensive, no sales tax, free two-day shipping and guaranteed by Amazon - for me, that's a no-brainer!Ta Dah! The book arrived in two days and was in "Like New" condition, dust jacket and all. Reading the "big" book turned out to be no "big" deal. The tome sat comfortably in my lap and as I relaxed with it in my favorite recliner, the hardcover and excellent binding kept the pages nicely in order. Yes, it is somewhat larger than a "normal" hardcover book but actually, it is no thicker. And now that I have it in my possession and have actually begun reading it, the quality of the paper and printing is so much better than a pulp and glue edition that I am delighted with my purchase.So what about Lewis? Well, Lewis is Lewis, and if you want to have a convenient collection of his works that you can use for both enjoyable reading and meditative reference, then my recommendation is to go for the hardcover edition. It is a really nice book and if you shop carefully, will cost you only a few dollars more than a chubby, stubby paperback of doubtful quality that at best, will turn yellow and fall apart if you give it any use at all.So that's my 2 cents' worth and I'm stickin' to it!

A great collection of Lewis's most popular works. Every modern Christian should read these books not only for their own spiritual enrichment and maturity, but to better equip themselves to answer a world that is growing increasingly hostile to the Christian faith. His unique merger of scripture and philosophy doesn't merely stop at logically confirming Christian principles, but also gives the reader a greater appreciation for their beauty, simplicity, and practicality.Mere Christianity- Lewis's introduction to the very basics of Christian faith. It is surprisingly accessible to the new Christian while also deep enough that the mature faith can also be strengthened by it. Highly recommended for those new to Biblical study or apologetics.The Screwtape Letters- Christian fiction written from the perspective of an elder demon instructing a younger one on tempting men. Despite being a narrative told through a series of episodic correspondences, this is one of the most varied and detailed studies on sin and temptation I've ever read. Especially effective for learning how to avoid sin when you can and how to deal with it when you can't.The Great Divorce- Another brilliant piece of Christian fiction which is set around some of Lewis's ideas about the afterlife. It's really less about answering questions about what Heaven or Hell will be like and far more about what we will be like there. Most of his ideas are conjecture and allegory, but none the less, based around a very realistic look into the human condition and how God's Word affects us.The Problem of Pain- Lewis tackles a very common question that becomes a stumbling block for many believers or those who want to believe: "Why would a loving God create a world so full of pain?" In one of his finest works, he explains how such a God not only could create such a world, but that creating any other world would be very inconsistent with such a God's nature and character. An absolute must for anyone interested in Christian philosophy and ethics.Miracles- In this commentary, Lewis takes a thorough look at every aspect of the miraculous starting with the existence of the supernatural in general and ending on the ideas behind the Biblical accounts of specific miracles. In this study, he looks at the definition, possibility, frequency, purpose, and importance of miraculous events in the Christian teachings. Any serious student of the Word that has struggled with any of these subjects on the supernatural or spiritual aspects of scripture or simply wishes to know more about them should read this book.A Grief Observed- Lewis takes a somewhat reflective look at his own life directly after the loss of his beloved wife, Joy. Arguably the most personal book he ever composed. He looks at how his life has changed and how it has affected him in his faith and daily walk with God. Using his signature blend of philosophy and Biblical scholarship, he strives to answer some of life's most haunting questions about how to carry on in a spiritual journey when you feel like you can't keep going.The Abolition of Man- A commentary on how people learn and how that process has been gradually degraded (pun intended) over the years. Lewis was himself an old professor and talks about many of the logical errors we propagate in our modern society simply because it's how we were taught. Lewis advocates for correct learning and true and honest scholarship that comes from daily rigorous critical thinking.A great addition to any Christian's library, and a must have for those interested in Christian thinking and philosophy.I Peter 3:15- but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;

I purchased the hardcover edition in 2010, and it is indeed of superior quality-- but way too big for reading in bits and pieces here and there around the house. I'm here now getting the same collection for a friend who was just ordained, and I think I'm going with the boxed set, because a paperback version of the hardback would be as difficult to hold open as Michener's Hawaii.If you're reading this, you don't need my opinion on CS Lewis's writings, now do you.

This is a beautiful box set and a nice addition to my permanent book collection. I wish the covers were a little more substantial, they are definitely low-end paperback, but the text is printed clearly so it won't affect my reading enjoyment. Nice enough to be a gift and very reasonably priced.
