My Spanish tutor recommended this book, and I bought to help my reading comprehension. It has helped tremendously. I would say that it is for the intermediate learner or maybe, slightly higher. I have read all but the last three chapters, and have enjoyed them immensely. It has also helped me learn a great deal more about verbs (number one thing for me), grammar, and sentence structure in Spanish. This would be a great book for anyone learning Spanish, or for Spanish speakers to read to their children. For those who are unfamiliar with the Bracero Programa which took place in California in the 1940s, 1950s, and maybe, the 1960s, it will be quite the eye-opener. Los Braceros picked all the fruits and vegetables that were commercially grown in California, and in my opinion, were treated despicably. These are the more-or-less autobiographical stories of the author who grew up in the era of this program, but the family never returned to Mexico. In two or three chapters, he mentions "undocumentos" so I believe that the family had green cards. The author and his older brother were born in Mexico, but the rest of his siblings were born in California. I love these stories even though at times they are very sad. For all Spanish language learners, this book and the others should be read.

I just finished reading this for my Spanish 11 class for native speakers. Aside from working in the fields, this book pretty much sums up my childhood from the moment my brothers and I came across the border illegally with a group of strangers. No speaking a single word of the English language, at the age of 9 I was enrolled in 4th grade. Just as Panchito, I too felt so scared, afraid and alone, but I was lucky enough to find two friends who spoke Spanish and English and helped me. Until they got promoted to 5th grade and I stayed in 4th. I highly recommend this book, its an easy read and easy to follow. Im ordering the next one to read for fun.

The English version titled "The Circuit" caught my eye a year ago and now, buying the original Spanish version for a class, I'm glad I waited to buy this one. The stories are filled with colloquial Spanish sayings and an eye-opening perspective on Mexican immigration. I would not reccommend the read for a beginner, but for an advanced Spanish student or anyone interested in a child's perspective on the immigration crisis, this book is an absolute MUST.

The book seemed to jump around a lot, but overall it's a great story of a boy and his family who come from Mexico to the United States as undocumented immigrants. It really shows the different aspects of immigration to America, even though it is a little dated (around the 50s, before Caesar Chavez). I would write this review in Spanish but I don't think my Spanish vocabulary is built up enough.

I love memoirs, and this was no different. I had to read it for my Introduction to Spanish Literature class and I wasn't disappointed. I identified with Francisco's heartbreaking story of him and his migrant family from start to finish, and the ending is a twist worthy of M. Night Shlamylan.

Although I didn't know every word in the book, I understood most of it and it's a good read for someone working on improving their Spanish.

I bought the book for my Spanish Heritage Speakers. I enjoy how the stories can be related to current events. The language is easy to understand and the details help you visualize each ocurrence .

Review

"The internal fire of Robert Simmons warms this writing—or, I should say, fires it up, so that you can see your life in a new light and feel a new kind of love ignited. . . . It contains perhaps the deepest mysteries of the Earth—and of the Cosmos. . . . The purpose of this writing is to invite us into a process without end–a new way of living."—Robert Sardello, PhD, author of Love and the Soul"In the crucial quest to restore accord between the human world and the living world which surrounds us, the reverent recognition of trans-human intelligence is our only chance. We have forgotten the indigenous wisdom that tells us ‘all created things are People.’ Stepping out of this prevailing amnesia, Robert Simmons takes us deep into a living rapport and relation with the ‘Stone People.’ This book is a gift to all who stand ready to enter the dance of participation, the never-ending co-creation of all that is."—Daniel Deardorff, author of The Other Within: The Genius of Deformity in Myth, Culture and Psyche"Finally, a book that ventures deep into the true realm of human and mineral relationship! Robert has eloquently revealed the larger picture of human evolution and the role of minerals in the shift of Gaia at this time, as well as honestly detailing the journey to deep intimacy with our mineral teachers."—Naisha Ahsian, coauthor of The Book of Stones and creator of The Crystal Ally Cards “Stones of the New Consciousness begins to spelunk the solidity of stones, taking us to the edge of consciousness and matter, and into the realm of co-creative evolution, fields of heart-intelligence, the crystalline nature of humans, the Soul of the world, myths and legends, shamanism, poets and prophets, and myriad ways that we can wrap our intelligence around the parallels and possibilities that working with stones offers… It is not light reading; it is, however, authoritatively original and inspiring, and weaves a fascinating tapestry of science and spirit that itself exemplifies the new consciousness the author strives to make more understandable and accessible… This book is going on my top shelf!”—New Consciousness Review

#59,266 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I have collected stones since childhood, and I've been working with their energies for over two decades. I bought this book after purchasing Simmons' 'The Book of Stones,' which became one my favourite out of the many books I own on stones, crystals and gems. 'Stones of the New Consciousness' was a welcome addition to my collection. Mr Simmons delves more deeply into some of the most powerful stones in existence, and his information on crystal grids was very insightful. I found this, along with 'The Book of Stones' to be far superior to Judy Hall's 'The Crystal Bible' collection - they're excellent for an overview, but those who are interested in learning more about the subtle energies of stones would do well to add these two books to your library.

ah, I really prefer "the book of stones' found this interesting but that's about it. I work in a crystal store, think it's too advanced for most and some of the stones are not easy to come by. Stick with "book of stones" instead. It's a crystal masterpiece, you won't need any other

This is a great book! It is a nice sized book (about 300 pages and something like 7 x 10" in size) and loaded with color photos of the stones. It begins with a 9-page intro by Robert Sardello, Co-Director of the School of Spiritual Psychology in North Carolina. The first half of the book (119 pages) is wisdom from Robert Simmons about various practices with stones based on his lifetime of working with them and consciously tuning into their energies. It provides a great deal of information including wearing stones, meditation practices to help you align with the energies of the stones, shamanic journeying, receiving messages, body layouts with stones, healing grids with stones, crystal acupuncture, etc.The 2nd half is about stones associated with New Age consciousness (pages 120 - 278) and is about the qualities and properties of each stone and how they work to heal or enhance your abilities. If you have "The Book of Stones" by Simmons and Ahsian, most of the stones in the new book are in "The Book of Stones" so don't think this is all new stones; however, there is a great deal of detail on each stone. There are a few stones that were not in the older book though. Conversely, there are a lot of stones in the old book that are not in the new book. The idea of the new book is to provide detailed "how to" information and to list the primary hot New Age stones (such as Nuummite, Moldavite, Azeztulite, etc.). If you are familiar with the prior book, you know that Simmons is particularly interested in Moldavite and Azeztulite. I can confirm that my personal experiences with Moldavite have been most interesting. Initially, and as weird as this sounds, I found its energy to be so intense that I could not wear it for extended periods of time for several months. In an early part of the book, Simmons states, "We meet the world through our senses and our imagination." He mentions that stones help us to develop our capacity of attention. I guess you could say that this is a capacity to bring attention to the subtleties of the energetic movement within our bodies as well as facilitate our heart-centered connection with Spirit. Although I used to laugh at things like this, I have found very special properties in the stones I encounter. (Guess I wasn't as smart as I once thought I was.) Tuning into stones is tuning into a big piece of the ever-fascinating world of nature and when you are blessed enough to feel the energies within them, it opens up the equivalent of a wondrous world of play for your inner child. And in absorbing those energies, you may share them with others as friends did with me.Anyway, back to the first part of this book--Simmons explains the crystal nature of humans, stating that we are crystalline both through the liquid crystal nature of our tissues and cell structures and in the crystal molecule of our DNA. (That reminds me-I was at a dinosaur museum in Alberta Canada and saw a large cut-open dinosaur bone and guess what was inside? CRYSTALS). Simmons also talks about Sophia, the Great Central Sun, the New Consciousness, the Light Body, and Heart Intelligence. He provides a bunch of meditations on related topics, including meeting stone spirits, inter-dimensional travel, shamanic journeying, sleeping and dreaming, and heart-centered ascension. He provides stone layouts and lists which stones to use for various outcomes (e.g. emotional healing, manifestation, angelic attunement, etc.). He provides info on making crystal waters and stone elixirs. He explains crystal/stone jewelry, pendants and combo pendants, wands, platonic solids, meditation pyramids. Simmons also provides 10 pages on the Azez and Azeztulite, one of his most favorite stones. This is a really nice book to have if you are being spiritually pulled into the New Age Consciousness. It will fuel your internal fire. Won't you please let your inner child come out and play?Peace and love to you on your path forward.Namaste'

I haven't read this whole book but my impression so far is that this guy likes the sound of his own voice (or seeing his words in print). And perhaps you like it too. I didn't. Like a seminar that lasts for an hour but contains only 20 minutes of information. He uses lots of words before he gets into anything substantial. Remember the "stream on consciousness" communication back in the late 60's & 70's? It seems to me that he is telling the reader about his new consciousness. You get to follow along, if you can. Then he finally gets down to discussing the stones themselves. Basically he holds a stone and then tells you how it makes him feel. He does give more general information about the stones too, but it is information that I'm sure can be found in other sources. Many of the 62 stones he reviews I have never heard of. The print is very small and a strain on my eyes. The pictures were good. While it is not a total waste of time, I'm sure we can find a better source of pertinent information in a more concise format.Could it be that I am simply stuck in my old consciousness? I continue my search.

This is an interesting and thorough book, but the buyer should know some things before taking all information at face value. Mr. Simmons (the author) has for many years had a very large investment in the stones that he promotes and sells. He is not a dis-interested party, nor is he unbiased in the stones that he says are the most amazing. Are they impressive and powerful? Certainly. But his personal interest in the popularity of some stones makes his reviews suspect. To see which stones his company has a stake in, take a wander through his catalog at [...] -- there is nothing wrong with his products, but he appears to favor the stones he sells as superior to others. In my opinion, the Book of Stones that he co-wrote with Naisha Ashian is a better investment than this one. In the Book of Stones, Naisha's representations of the attributes of stones more closely matches with my own experiences, so I can trust them more.Still an interesting read, but not totally objective.

WOW! powerful and packs a punch, if you want to go to the next level, this is the book for you! Technical and full of info and self-awareness material. Enjoyed it. Heavy and big book.

Robert Simmons makes all stones and crystals seem like they are powerful objects that can help everyone. However, I do not believe that every stone of each type of crystal are the same, the same way that while we are all humans and have 2 eyes, 2 ears, etc - we are all still individuals.

Written by David Henry Hwang, M. BUTTERFLY opened on Broadway in 1988 and played over seven hundred performances before closing in 1990.Casting is demanding. The play requires four actors, one of whom must be Asian, sing well, and convincing impersonate a woman; three women; and three male dancers who can perform traditional Chinese theatre dance. The Asian actor and one of the women appear nude in the play, and while the woman’s nudity may be more implied than literal, it is difficult to imagine how the male nudity (which is briefly frontal) can be avoided. The set is equally demanding. The play is written in three acts. Each act contains multiple scenes that occur in different locations at different points between 1966 and 1988, and the set must be able to support rapid shifts in time and place.M. BUTTERFLY is an extremely complex script that operates on several different levels. In one sense, it is a view of the culture clash between east and west; in another sense, it makes a statement on gender roles and the perception of gender, and the multiple ways in which gender can be exploited. The play draws heavily from the Puccini opera MADAME BUTTERFLY, which tells the story of a Japanese geisha who commits suicide when her American husband abandons her, but the play ultimately inverts these roles. The play also draws heavily from the espionage scandal of real-life French diplomat Bernard Boursicot and his lover, Chinese opera singer Shi Pei Pu, who used their relationship to pass secret information to the Chinese government during the Vietnam War.It is difficult to discuss the play without revealing the plot devices which make the play so intriguing. Although the espionage element drives the plot, the play is actually more concerned with the way in which people deceive themselves about each other, and how that delusion can operate in even the most physically intimate relationships. We are not always who we think we are, and the people around us are not always who they seem to be. Given the difficulties of casting and set, I think the play is very unlikely to be seen in a community theatre or educational (college, university) theatre; it requires access to a talent pool that few such theatres have.Plays are written to be seen, not read, and M. BUTTERFLY is a case in point. It is very, very difficult to read this script and imagine how it was staged in your head. Act One reads rather slow, and Act Two and Three seem better written in a literary sense, but this does not necessarily have a relation to how the script actually performs in front a live audience. I think this is a script best left to people who are knowledgeable about theatre. Recommended even so.GFT, Amazon Reviewer

I read David Henry Hwang's "Yellowface" first. And I loved it. It is a brilliant play that does a great job discussing race and discussing the discussions of race. Fabulous.I decided to read the play that put Mr. Hwang on the map: the 1988 Tony award winning "M Butterly." It's ok. There are some good moments and a few interesting observations and funny lines. The movie "The Crying Game" came out a few years after this play, and even though I never saw it, it seemed like everyone talked about it and knew what happened. "The Crying Game" obviously took some plot points (the main one) from "M Butterfly," but with a key difference. The reader/audience knows what is happening for most of the time in "M Butterfly, " while the end of "The Crying Game" was a shock. It was nominated for the Pulitzer in 1989 but lost to "The Heidi Chronicles," a better play. "The Piano Lesson" was also nominated that year but lost. Strangely, "The Piano Lesson" won in 1990. I digress. This is a good play. The Tony Award seems like a bit much, but I'm looking at it from 30 years in the future.Go read "Yellowface." It's great. Far better than this.

I have read both the original version and Broadway version and I definitely prefer the new version. The narrative is woven together better and it uses more facts from the real case to tie this story together better. As a story, what more needs to be said? This is a beautiful and breathtaking work, based off a fantastical real life situation that Hwang helps us understand and give context to using this play. Gallimard is a wonderfully complex characters, simultaneously aware of the imbalanced power dynamics that brought him into this situation but unable to stop himself from taking advantage once he has it. Song Liling both exemplifies the sensuality of the ideal of the female gender while also showing how fragile and manufactured it is. The butterfly twist at the end was amazing. Both are characters trying to navigate and triumph in society's strict gender roles as well as play roles in the global power struggles between China and the western world in that time, and it's a great human perspective on this part of history. For those of you who want to see a modern nan dan/Song Liling (minus the political subterfuge), please go check out Li Yu Gang on youtube. Although he has not had proper Chinese opera training, he's succeeded in portraying the idea Chinese beauty, the pinnacle of womanhood, and he's constantly praised for being beautiful in costume and in his beautiful, feminine, singing voice. I kept picturing him the whole time I read this play.

Wow, this might be the best play I've ever read. The exposition is phenomenal, the unique stage directions really making you vividly imagine the play. Don't watch the Jeremy Irons movie and say you read it if this is for a class, the movie is awful ESPECIALLY compared to this awesome book. It really brings to light the harmful/incorrect nature of orientalism and you see this stereotype (as in, the Asian woman being submissive and modest) come to bite the protagonist in the butt in the end. Very interesting read, I don't know much about the Vietnam War or anything in this era but I understood everything I was reading and couldn't put it down. You won't regret reading this!
