Although I enjoyed reading this book and I did learn quite a bit, by the end, I wondered if Paul Strathern loathed the entire Medici Family and the City of Florence in general. Additionally, he seemed to spend an unnecessary amount of time pointing out various individuals’ sexual proclivities and/or perversions. And his unsubstantiated opinions on certain artist’s homosexual leanings differ from many well respected art historians. If you want to learn about Florence, don’t make this your only book. The picture he paints is one tiny ugly slice of an otherwise magnificent people and city.

The text is straight forward. The narrative flows nicely. The information is informative and often witty. No doubt professional historians may be appalled by its style. For history buffs who know little or nothing about this important family of giants and midgets, givers and takers, saints and sinners, etc, this is an excellent read.

This family may be the most responsible for what has become known as the Renaissance. Not only were they patrons of the great masters of the time, some even lived in their family home. Wonderful prose makes this an extremely enjoyable read. Very hard to put down. Left me wanting to learn more about this exciting time in history.

This is a highly readable book about the history of the Medici family beginning with founding father Cosimo through the last Medici Gian Gastone.

Good introduction. Fair Italian map. Rather good Florence map. Good index. Well-constructed but very cheap paper. One very annoying point: the font size changed throughout the book, very often changing on the same pages from paragraph to paragraph. Found the last 100 pages, slow, plodding and rather uninteresting.

Have read much on the deMedici family. Learning some new info here. Enjoying the writing style very much. The Audible voice is very pleasing.

In my opinion, the Medici were one of the most interesting families of history. Banking and trading, arts and science patronage throughout the Renaissance, Vatican politics... they did it all. This book not only tells this story of the Medici, but zooms out enough to give you a sense of the world at the time so that you can better understand how they so profoundly affected it. The author has a great writing style, too. It’s intelligent, but also sports a novelist’s flare that pulls you along with its imagery and frequent wit.

I bought this for my grandma to read and she likes it but it is incredibly heavy. I would say that it is an advanced read. The facts are awesome and you got lots of information. It is incredibly well researched.

The Privilege of the Sword (Swords of Riverside, Book 2), by Ellen Kushner

From Publishers Weekly

Kushner's winning high fantasy with its sophisticated swordplay marks a welcome return to the romantic Riverside world she introduced in Swordspoint (1987). Coming-of-age gets complicated for winsome Lady Katherine Samantha Campion Talbert after she's shipped off to her uncle, the Mad Duke of Tremontaine (aka David Alexander "Alec" Tielman Campion), who reigns over a decadent world of erotic and political intrigue. At first Kate's frightened of becoming a swashbuckler, but after training with the duke's favorite lover, the dashing Richard St. Vier, and becoming friends with Marcus, Alec's devoted young assistant, she finds she's more than up for the task. Her skills are tested in her effort to avenge the rape of her best friend, Lady Artemesia Fitz-Levy, by one of her uncle's foes, Anthony Deverin (aka Lord Ferris, Crescent Chancellor of the Council of Lords). Kate's discovery that "Fear is enemy to the sword" and love is the key to triumph leads to surprising consequences. (Aug.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

The most recent Riverside story follows Swordspoint (2003) in chronology and features many of its characters. Alec, Duke Tremontaine, aka the Mad Duke of Riverside, has sent for his impoverished young niece, Katherine. She and her family hope he'll make a good marriage for her, but the Mad Duke has decided to train her as a sword fighter. She is furious, and besides a swordmaster to train her, her uncle also springs what becomes her fall into society, without warning or training, on her. She learns the sword perforce out of self-defense and also, bit by bit, the city, the nobility, politics, and her uncle. When Katherine is trained and entered into society with her weapon, she wades hip-deep into plots against her uncle and becomes the champion of a lady in distress, too. Plot and style hereare in the swashbuckling tradition of Dumas, but the characters are very real beneath their facades, people who bleed when they are cut, even when manners require that they make nothing of it. Considering the fame of Ellen Kushner's books it probably isn't worth wasting a lot of time writing a review that no one will read. There are a lot of reviews for this, so mine is likely going to be lost in a sea of other reviews. Still, since I'm here I might as well give some thoughts.First, loved the book. There is a reason these books are so popular and why NG presents it. The political intrigue is, once again top notch. The book is considerably different from the first and quite possibly worse too. While the first suffered from too many characters you just didn't care about, this one suffered from a world that seemed less well ironed out. For example, how is dueling and challenges so dangerous if the challenged individual chooses if it is to the death or first blood? Wouldn't the challenged always just go first blood? And where is the climax? The book seems to build and then just peter out.Don't let me imply the book is not good, this book is excellent. The nit pickings above are merely the difference between an utterly perfect masterpiece and 'only' one of the best books I've ever read.At any rate, you didn't read this review, no one did, but I hope more riverside books comes out someday.

This might not be as well written as Swordspoint, but it is still an amazing novel. I couldn't put it down until I had finished reading. When I finished, I re-read my favourite parts again. Basic plot: Katherine Talbot is a sweet and sensible teenager who is sent to live with her Uncle Alec Campion, also known as the Mad Duke, to learn swordfighting. Alec only agrees to pay off Katherine's family's debts if Katherine comes to live with him. Katherine is swept up in a world of secrets, treachery and betrayal. Along the way, she fights for a friend who has been brutally sexually assaulted by her fiancee, and learns that her Uncle is more compassionate and thoughtful than he seems. Some scenes dragged a bit, and I could care less for Marcus's (the love interest) sexism. I did feel great empathy and sorrow for Marcus given his traumatic past, although Marcus's prejudice against sex workers was rather unpleasant to read. But the characters are realistic, vibrant and three dimensional. There's plenty of joy and sadness, humour and resilience in them. And that's always wonderful. There are graphic violent scenes, and explicit sexual references. You may want to skip those parts if they're not your kind of thing.I was happy that gay characters are portrayed sensitively in Privilege of the Sword (no surprises there, as Kushner also achieved this in Swordspoint). It was lovely to see Richard and Alec again. The ending is delightful, especially the romantic parts with Alec and Richard. I was overjoyed at Katherine becoming braver and learning to stand up for herself, her Uncle and her friends. This is Book 2 of the Riverside trilogy. It is best to start with Book 1, which is Swordspoint. You don't have to start with Swordspoint (Privilege of the Sword is a stand alone novel), but I'd recommend doing so, in order to understand the characters and world better.

The Privilege of the Sword follows Katherine, a poor noblewoman who is invited to her uncle's home in the city. She arrives expecting a season of balls and parties and hoping to find a good match and secure her family's future, but her uncle, the unconventional Mad Duke Tremontaine, has other ideas. Katherine is to become a swordsman (and his bodyguard), unprecedented for a woman.I first heard about this book on the Williamsburg Regional Library blog, Blogging for a Good Book. Like that reviewer, I was immediately struck by the proud swordswoman on the cover, and being a sucker for swashbuckling women, figured that I would probably enjoy the book. Upon further research, I discovered that it was a sequel to Swordspoint, which I decided to read first (earlier this year.) Although I didn't love Swordspoint, I liked it enough to want to read more, and I've finally gotten around to it.The Privilege of the Sword, and other Ellen Kushner books have been described as a "fantasy of manners." I can certainly understand the "manners" bit, but I'm not quite sure that it's a fantasy. I've always thought of the defining characteristic of fantasy being magic/some sort of supernatural power. The Privilege of the Sword takes place in an imaginary world, but there is no magic involved.Anyway, onto the actual review. I really enjoyed the book, more so than Swordspoint, probably because of the younger, female protagonist. Katherine was a lot of fun to read about, she's determined, curious, and honourable. She manages to become an accomplished swordsman without losing any of her femininity. Her reactions to all the things that happen to (and around) her, and her growth as a character is written really well and feels totally real. The world of the nobles around her is also entertaining (although probably would be really tiresome to live in), with constant plotting and scheming within the strict customs of rich society.I'll definitely be reading the third book set in this world, The Fall of The Kings, soon!

While some may enjoy this book. I sadly, did not. Had I been a British professor, maybe, but it was slow and a bit dry snd definatly not written the way Americans prefer to read.

This was a collection of essays that were on the whole very entertaining. The first was a bit erudite for my taste but the remainder made the book very worthwhile.

Oh wow where do I even start with this book... First of all the title of this book is very misleading since it claims to be full of 'untold' soldier stories from WWI, but in reality it only contains about 5 or 6 stories and a few short stories about soldiers experiences during the war. All the stories are told from a 3rd person perspective and not a single one contains actual diary entries or quotes from the person being described. Not to mention the fact that 5 of the 6 main stories are all about American troops like the famous Sergeant York for example. Why is this a problem?First of all these are supposed to be 'untold' or unheard of stories from the war. Sergeant Alvin York was the most decorated and famous American soldier in WWI. His story is well known and documented so why is it in here? Secondly, I hate to sound unamerican but the United States didn't even enter the war until April of 1917 and was only in the war barely over a year and a half while countries like Britain, France, Russia, and Germany spent 4 whole years fighting the war. Why not include stories from the other sides? The book itself is very short in length and only about 1/4 of it contains the so called soldier stories. The rest of the book is just a brief overview of the war and how it got started. The information on the war might be educational to those who are unfamiliar with the history of WWI but for those who are there's not much new to learn here. One of the biggest complaints I have with this book aside from its inaccurate title... is its spelling and grammar. I felt like I was a history teacher grading a 5th graders report on WWI. There are so many spelling and grammatical errors in this book its not even funny. If you don't believe me just look at the picture I included with this review and that's barely scratching the surface. The publisher clearly didn't even edit the book let alone run a simple spell check. And if that wasn't enough the pages aren't even numbered so you have to flip through the book until you find the chapter you're looking for.I advise you to avoid this book at all costs. All of the information in this book including the soldier stories can be found on Wikipedia or another internet source and isn't worth your hard earned dollars. I can't believe this book is listed as a 'best seller' on Amazon when it reads as if it were copy and pasted by a 12 year old.If you really want to know what frontline combat and daily life in the trenches was like read "Storm of Steel" by Ernst Jünger. It is by far one of the best (and true) soldier stories from WWI out there and spares no graphic details of the true horrors witnessed by soldiers during the great war.Sorry Mr. Jenkins. I will not be purchasing another one of your poorly written sad excuses for a history book.

Since the last World War I veterans has died in the past few years, we only have their stories and their documents to learn from. Books like this one from Ryan Jenkins sheds more light about the prime reason the war even took place. It makes more sense than the drawn out lectures in high school history. Causes of the war are explained, key battles are highlighted, challenges are noted (especially since how soldiers fought in this modern war was nothing like how their ancestors fought before), and heroes are recognized. The soldiers' battle stories include those on land and at sea, in Europe and Africa, and with men who were either British and German. Nimy Bridge and the Battle of Mahiwa are just a few mentioned. The poison gas attacks are also mentioned in detail for their purpose and challenges in treatment. This book is full of detail without being overly academic. If you want to know the basics of the war and some of the day who fought in it, his books is an ideal one to read.

Lately, I've gotten interested in WWI, primarily on the basis of the air war from both the German and American perspective.I saw this book and was interested in the story line in that it dealt with the war from the purview of the soldier in the trenches. However, what interested me the most was the author's narration of how the war started. We all know that Arch Duke Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated by a Bosnian Serb (name escapes me). But it has always seemed odd to me that such a single event could lead to such an uprising involving virtually all the countries of Europe.Well, it seems that the beginning of the war, at least as this author presents it, is steeped in history going back to the 18th century. What I thought was interesting, however, was that following the assassination of the Arch Duke Austria made demands on Serbia which the latter told Austria, in effect, to go pound sand. As such, Austria declared war on Serbia. Seems straight forward enough. But, what was really interesting to learn was the treaty agreements the two countries respectively had with other counties going back in time. So, when these two got into it, several other countries, by dint of their treaty agreements with either side, did to. As a result, It came to be largely accepted that the war began as a result of these "Alliance" agreements that existed with other countries and their joining the war in support of either Austria or Serbia. This is a relatively short book, which can be easily read in a single sitting and likely interesting only to war buffs, either WWI and/or WWII (the latter of which in Europe is my main interest). For that reason I found this little book helpful to my needs and recommend it to others interested in the genre as well.

I recommend Ryan Jenkins’ books to everyone who is interested in knowing a little more about history , especially the WWI and WWII era. His books are short and interesting. This book is about heroic soldiers and their stories about WWI. Their tales of bravery in their own small way , the way they changed the course of war. Their role in the war was undeniably crucial. While this books is brief, the information provided is enough to keep the reader hooked.

I love Laurence Anholt and the way he introduces children to great artists. This book has a nice level of whimsy, and it touches upon Leonardo's genius in both engineering and art. It includes copies of real works, as well as Anholt's renditions of othe rworks. The characters are fun and provide children with something relatable. I used this book with preschoolers, and it was a hit because it was read in an animating voice and with stops for clarification ("Did you know that someone had to invent the airplane?"). You can't just read straight through if the audience is four-year-old. My six-year-old needs clarification, but likes the book even more than younger kids. I imagine it is perfect for 2nd-4th graders.

I can't say enough good about this series. It is a creative way to introduce kids to these artists. They are written to be kids stories and entertain while throwing in some information about who the artist is, to show the artists' general style and introduce some specific works by the artist. My daughter is 5. She soaks this stuff in. I think she would have been able to be as receptive to the stories at age 4 and maybe just earlier than that but it would have been pushing the envelope. I suspect she will enjoy the stories for another couple years. It has lead us to google some of the actual artists' works. My daughter now wants to find some museums that have some of the pieces that are addressed in the books.

Omg this book is amazing. I bought it for my 6 year old but I've learned so much from it as well. He have 2 books from this collection and will be buying all of them. Love it, the images and the story are a delight for my 6 year old and myself.

My introverted kindergarten age son randomly but excitedly started telling me ALL about Leonardo DaVinci at dinner and this book his teacher from enrichment had read to him (not even recently). So I had to ask his teacher what book it was because he wanted to own it and read it again and again with me. Book arrived super fast.

I love this book. We originally got it from our library, but my 4 years old liked it so much we ended up buying it. It is a charming story, based on real facts: my son can relate well to the main characters, two children working in Leonardo's studio. I liked the fact that we get to know one of the greatest man that ever lived in a fun way. I also loved the illustrations, which incorporate real Leonardo's drawings and original illustrations. Finally, if you want to learn more about Leonardo and the facts the story was based on, there is a full page giving you more info. I would highly recommend this book for any preschool child.

I teach a unit on artists to second-grade students. Leonardo and the Flying Boy help students relate to the artist who lived 500 years ago. This book combines fiction with two real boys who worked with Leonardo in his studio. While my students enjoyed this book, it doesn't have the charm and high interest of the Katie series of books by James Mayhew.

My daughter is an Art teacher in an elementary school in Denver. She loves using these books with her classes.

I would give this 10 stars if I could. You would be doing yourself and your children a favor by purchasing this! I learned more than what I thought I knew, and my 8 year old ate it up. I love that this book can connect with adults and children alike. A must buy for anyone wanting to expand their children's knowledge of an incredible painter!
