I first read the Tao Te Ching in college. Somewhere along the line I lost that copy so I decided to pick up this one (especially since it had such high reviews). This copy seemed much different than the one I read years back. And I am not just talking about the author's choice to use female pronouns as well as male pronouns in his version (incidentally - how close can one get to awareness of Tao if one allows oneself to get hung up on seeing "He" rather than "She" in the teachings?).In one portion of this "tao de ching: A New English Version" ("Version" is the key word) the author chooses to translate "When the Tao is absent in a country,/ war horses are bred on the borders" to "When a country goes counter to the Tao, Warheads are stockpiled outside the cities". This author has written his "modernized" version of the Tao Te Ching and he claims to have been open in this fact, supposedly by him using the terms "A New English Version". When one reads further one in the notes you see the author admitting he does not even know Chinese (so his interpretation of the Tao is from other translations - and how he thinks the lines should read for poetics sake, or P.C. sake, etc).At first I thought I would not write a review on this book. But when seeing the author admit to what I had suspected it made me feel like I really got ripped off. If you are looking for a translation of the Tao Te Ching do not get this author's book. The author respects the Tao but this is not the real deal. I will be purposefully losing this book and looking for a better translation.

I turned it over in my hands and it was clearly very short in length, so I decided to just read a few pages while I finished my morning coffee.One and a half hours later I had finished the book entirely, along with my coffee, and I immediately knew upon completion that I would read this book many, many more times in my life.It was a highly profound, dare I say life changing read that dramatically impacted my perspective towards my own happiness and how I interact with others. Written as a collection of very short, almost poem-like chapters, often each occupying less than a single page, this book is a masterfully crafted guide to find real happiness and fulfillment in your life. This book is very confusing to read because of the way its been printed. There's no uniformity; Instead of having one verse per page and then a commentary section, there's several verses on one page with different types and sizes of font throughout so visually it looks very cluttered and crammed together and it's not enjoyable to read. It looks like a cheap, self-publishing project gone wrong. It's such an important text, it's disappointing that they didn't take more care to make it more readable.

For one thing, it sent me to the dictionary more than once*. For another, he artfully relates the cholera epidemic as a struggle of microbiology and of society. "Ghost Map" is about one kind of prokaryote (an organism composed of a cell with no nuclei, i.e., a bacterium) which needs eukaryotes (all other organisms, including humans) in which to live and multiply, and it's also about the humans who unwittingly create ideal environments for the cholera bacteria's life cycle.It's also about cities - and although I'm not sold on everything Johnson writes about the future of urbanism, he has some intriguing ideas. Because of them, I'll probably again read The Death and Life of Great American Cities - which I haven't looked at in years - with a new perspective.I would recommend "Ghost Map" not as a book with all the answers, but as one with a well-told historical tale which also poses important questions about the future of our urban life.----------*I admit that I'm using in this review some of the words I looked up - hoping that it will help me remember them.

The primary reason that country people began to move to the cities was because many estates were converted to sheep farming. See the history of the so-called 'Highland clearances'.The description of the disposal of human bodies and graveyards in general makes one wonder why cremation was not widespread.Concerning Johnson's discussion of the scavengers in third world countries, in America, in the 21st Century we still have people who make their living scavenging the streets, highways and dumpsters for metal, such as aluminum cans.It's interesting that Dr. Snow and the Rev. Whitehead actually interviewed people in the cholera infected areas. The aristocracy generally had no interest in the underclasses.All in all, The Ghost Map is a document celebrating the triumph of the scientific method versus "everybody knows".Read it. You may learn something.Since this book was published in 2006, some sections are now dated.

Through the London epidemic of Cholera in 1854, the author presents the Victorian era science, public opinions and participating individuals in the pursuit of stopping the epidemic. The book is about the urbanization of society and subsequent public health challenges, and how the experience shaped the management of urban governing through science, sociology and engineering and the future ramifications of urban issues in the time of global dangers. It is one of those exemplary non fiction, history/science/technology books that are entertaining with interesting participants, and their opponents--personal, political and environmental--, but in the end the triumph against all odds, thanks to some luck, but a whole lot of tenacity and scientific and personal integrity and faith. There are many lessons, one of which is what Susan Sontag wrote about as well, the malice of attaching morality to disease--here, for example phrenology, or internal constitution as a factor, classism, or the treatment of people with AIDS during the Reagan administration in our time. I found the only problem with this book is that his Epilogue is way too long than necessary, and he repeats same issues that have been discussed already.

Whitehead as a trusted, respected local was key in turning the made up minds of city agencies who stubbornly clung to the idea the disease originated in the foul, smelly air to accepting the actual catalyst for the outbreak.This is really an outstanding detective story very well told. A history lesson if you will. The facts, players and uncanny elusiveness of this indiscriminate killer called cholera progressed systematically without the bog down of boring statistics. The author skillfully carries history into our modern times with glimpses into our foreseeable future. A notable writing achievement.

This would be a five star book if the last 30 pages hadn't drifted into a conversation on nuclear weapons that is only tangentially related to the book itself. Anyone who has ever taken an epidemiology class has heard of John Snow and the Broad Street Pump, but this was a much more detailed account. In the same spirit of the Microbe Hunters, Steven Johnson puts his readers in the mind of the subjects. The quotes are real the thoughts inferred, but the story comes to life in a way a more traditional biographical or timeline approach can never do. Whether you care about cholera outbreaks in Victorian London or not, this is an interesting story about two determined men, public health, and how much city life has and hasn't changed.

I've already made 7, and they've all been winners.I'm single, so it's not like I'm cooking for a crowd every night. But I do enjoy entertaining, and my friends seem to enjoy being "guinea pigs" for my culinary experiments. I let 'em know when I get a new cookbook, and we plan 3-4 parties based on it.The book is organized into menus which can help with planning. But there's no law that says you can't "mix and match" recipes from multiple menus. Each menu includes an appetizer, a pasta dish, a main dish with at least one side, and a dessert. The desserts are worth noting: they're all consistently good, and most general Italian cookbooks won't give you 52 dessert recipes. A HUGE hit with my friends was the zuppa inglese -- trifle with lemon pudding and pound cake: rum-splashed layers of cake, pudding, strawberry jam, and fresh strawberries, topped with whipped cream and a bit of lemon zest. I've done the pollo alla Vesuvio (chicken vesuvio) and manzo marinato (marinated flank steak) for company with excellent results.This is a seriously good Italian cookbook, well-organized, and full of mouth-watering recipes that your family and friends will love.

One of my most used Italian cookbooks, and I have over 25 on my shelf. Italian is my favorite cuisine, and at least 2x a year I do a 5 course, all homemade full-on Italian meal for my Italian husband and his 8 siblings and spouses. It takes me weeks to determine the right menu. This is the one I happen to zone in on most often. I like the composed menus, the variety, pictures and stories. Normally I'll pull at least 10 cookbooks down and comb through them... using a spreadsheet to keep track of the options by courses. This year I used this cookbook and two others. I didn't even bother pulling others into the fray. "Whatever Happened to Sunday Dinner?" is worth EVERY. SINGLE. PENNY.One Complaint:This cookbook literally fell apart. The binding is broken and the pages are falling out. I know it sounds like I use it every day and that perhaps I'm hard on my books. Nothing could be further from the truth. These are my gems. I am fiendishly protective of my books because they're like companions to me - my friends on my culinary explorations. The fact that this beloved book has fallen apart is a bit upsetting, but it won't keep me from promoting the contents.

I grew up in an Italian household where Sunday night dinner was a big deal. As our family split up and my papa passed away, Sunday dinners sort of faded away. So, the title of this book immediately drew me in and I am glad I found it. The recipes are yummy and the photos are great too. As I read through many of the recipes, I had that old feeling of nostalgia and smiled as I thought of my childhood and my nana. The recipes yield a lot of food so unless you are feeding a small army, you may need to scale these back a bit. Wish I had more people to feed so I can use the book more, but regardless, I look forward to starting my own new Sunday traditions!

Generally a good book, but today I was looking for a recipe and noticed that my copy is bound without pages 115-130, which is where the recipe I was looking for is supposed to be found. It is not a problem of the binding or that somehow these pages fell out, instead the publisher bound it without these 16 pages. If you buy it, check to make sure that your book actually includes all of the pages. Other than that, it is a very good Italian cookbook.

Love this cookbook. My latest hot recommendation and gift to give. Have tried 8 of the recipes so far and have yet to be disappointed. The interesting stories accompanying the recipes are dear. My only regret is that I did not photograph the selections I have already made; the cookbook has limited photos. But no big deal, the tastes are great.

I really enjoy how the recipes are very simple with limited ingredients. I also really enjoy the menu format rather than separate sections of appetizers, pasta courses, mains and desserts. I find that the recipes do allow for more than one person in the kitchen, which works for me as I'm always trying to cook with my wife.Be cautioned that if you cook based on the ingredient measurements it produces a lot of food. Each menu can serve at least 8 people.

I bought this book after seeing it at my local library. It is one of the few cookbooks that I use on a weekly basis. The recipes are authentic and delicious! I get many compliments on the dishes I make from this book.

Not what I expected, probably will never use it.

About the Author

John Larison spent much of his childhood in remote regions of Australia, the Caribbean, Canada, the South Pacific, Alaska, and the American West before graduating from high school in Ithaca, New York. He studied philosophy and literature at the University of Oregon, and became a renowned fly-fishing guide ahead of earning an MFA from Oregon State University, where he stayed to teach while writing Whiskey When We’re Dry. He lives with his family in rural Oregon.

I simply had to get this one based solely on the book review in the paper. It didn't disappoint! I was up until 3am last night and I had just started it at 11pm. Didn't want to do anything else today - and can hardly wait to get back into this story tonight!

This is an outstanding story. I couldn’t put it down. I had to know what would happen next to Jessilyn. From start to finish it felt like a story that could have really happened. I enjoyed reading this as much as the best books by Stephen Harrigan and even Cormac McCarthy.

A lyrical adventure centered around a hero whose voice you won’t soon forget. The body count was high, but hey, there were gunslingers involved. The hard life of the opening West was solidly evoked, a believable chunk of probable history, and the characters felt real, with real feelings, real love, real heartbreak. I wasn’t crazy about an outlaw utopia just past the middle, but the book got past that regrounded itself commendably. Glad I travelled along with Jess, the toughest cowgirl or cowboy you’ll be lucky enough to meet.

It’s 1885 in rural America. Jessilynn Harney is orphaned at a young age, and is alone when her brother Noah runs away from home at age 16. Jessilynn hasn’t seen him in five and a half years, until she goes to town looking for a husband and the Sheriff tells her there’s a warrant out for Noah: wanted dead or alive.Having no other kin except an outlaw for a brother, Jessilynn takes matters into her own hands. She chops her hair, disguises herself in men’s clothing, takes her pa’s guns and rides off with her horse to find her brother.The story tells of her journey to find Noah. She faces violence, death, thievery, and even love.Whiskey When We’re Dry is True Grit meets Cormac McCarthy.This novel was so beautifully written (I found myself reading aloud in my head with a Southern drawl - how corny is that?!). The Wild West seems to be something of a dying genre, and it felt right that this novel started my fall reading. I will recommend Whiskey When We’re Dry oh so many times over.

This book knocked my socks off. The main character is new to fiction and made me ponder ethical choices I hadn't previously thought about.

What a story! Not a Western fAn but the reviews enticed me to read this book . It was majestic and as big as the mountains itself. Do yourself a favor a nd read this book and escape into the American West.

This is a beautifully written coming of age story of a young woman in the later 1800’s in the Southwest. Lovely prose and exciting plot line along with a rich sense of the characters make this a do-not-miss!!!

This is one of the best books on public speaking that I have come across. It is full of wonderful tips and tricks to make your speech fluid, clear and memorable. Some of the other reviews have a valid point in that it mainly deals with speeches without a slide deck. I see there point but disagree that this book would not benefit even the most seasoned Power Point Range.It's a great resource for anyone who has to persuade a group of people to listen to you -- even if you have a slide deck to back you up. The stories are charming and inspirational with a good dose of practically mixed in.It's important to know that Mr. Valenti worked with some of the best public speakers in the world and those experiences alone are worth the price of the book. I really loved the JKF and LBJ stories. Priceless.

Jack Valenti knows his stuff and demonstrates with finesse the skills and techniques required for successful public speaking. Even the experts, like Barbara Walters, are taking tips from this prolific writer and respected public speaker. His stories and eloquent illustrations are vivid and memorable, drawing both from his personal experience and real life examples of top public figures.Valenti was a speechwriter for US President Johnson and is currently president of the Motion Picture Association of America. Jack Valenti is definitely from the pre-PowerPoint days! I find it hard to believe that President Kennedy and other famous politicians and actors were as nervous before speaking or performing on TV as Mr. Valenti makes them out to be.

If you are doing well in one-to-one conversations but stumble whenever you have to talk to an audience, you will find some good advice in this book. For "two dollars a piece", you will learn five basic rules that will help you a long way. Nothing more, nothing less. Well worth the money and the time to read it.

Thus begins an adventure that will make readers laugh and never ever want to set foot aboard a ship.The story unfolds in Cyd’s first person narrative, and the situation driven plot is guided by her conversations with those she meets. She reflects on her decisions. (“This was crazy. Why was I doing this?”) She tells readers her plans. (“I’d ask her about that later.”) She recounts her experiences. (“I’d been forced to arrange a few speedboats for tardy clients.”) She shares evaluations. (“They sailed to bucket list locations and hadn’t had a norovirus /fire in the engine room/ sinking disaster in the past few years, so I felt better putting my clients there.”) Readers trust her instincts and her strategies for maximizing travel rewards. (“I was able to combine my credit card frequent flier points, travel agent discounts, and three coupons to upgrade Harriet’s coach seat into Premium Economy for both legs, round trip.”) However, even Cyd has her limits, (“Look, as far as accessories go, I’m strictly a purse and shoes girl. I was given a copy of “Drowned Under” from Wendall Thomas and Poison Pen Press. It was hilarious, outrageous, and funny. I learned that even a $4000 handbag should have Tupperware and Band-Aids.

Thanks to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for an advanced copy of Drowned Under in exchange for an honest review. I recently read Lost Luggage, the first book in the Cyd Redondo series, and it did not appeal to me. I did not like its frenzied slapstick humour, its over-the-top, frantic action scenes, and found Cyd to be ditzy, unfocused, and an incompetent travel agent. I am happy to say that this second novel was more enjoyable and a positive improvement over the first, which was set in Africa and involved the cruelty of animal trafficking.This book started out in the same over-the-top manner, but I was glad I stuck to it. Cyd seemed smarter and more resourceful. She managed to get herself into bad situations, but this time was rarely the cause of them. I became engaged in the plot to save the last Tasmanian tiger. Having watched a tragic documentary about their extinction, I wished this storyline was true. Along with Cyd’s determination to prove her friend and her future roommate on the Australian cruise ship had been murdered, and her part in exposing a conspiracy to defraud senior travellers, the plot held my interest. I was annoyed with all the unnecessary focus on designer clothing, brand name shoes and accessories. I was wanting to focus on a travel adventure, not feel I was reading a fashion magazine. After several dozen mentions of her expensive, Balenciaga bag, we get it. It was a useful accessory to Cyd in situations in both books, but it was tiresome relying on the brand name repeatedly. I found all the high-end clothing and shoe references interrupted the storyline, and made her sound conceited despite her mention of travel agent discounts and sales. I have always enjoyed stories of travel adventures and misadventures, but Cyd made me grateful that my travels in Africa and Australia very rarely involved any use of a travel agent. I would read another book in the series, but hopefully the tendency for slapstick humour continues to be more restrained and also the focus on brand name fashion will be reduced. The plot was well imagined and held my attention.

Before reading The Hunger Games trilogy, I had more than a few people tell me the first two books were good, but the last one was lacking. I couldn't disagree more. The story is harsh, gruesome, and bleak. It had to be. It's a first person account of an individual who has survived two Hunger Games and plays a major role in a revolution. Of course it's going to be brutal. Had the story drawn to a close with Katniss standing majestically with trumpets blaring and flags waving, it would have been completely unrealistic.I also heard a few people express disappointment in the conclusion of the Katniss/Peeta storyline. I've read people's reviews taking issue with how Katniss and Peeta are represented at the end of Mockingjay, asking "Where's the passion?" Passion? Are they insane? First of all, the story is told in first person by a character who is admittedly not at all comfortable being demonstrative and doesn't respond well to those who are. There was never going to be a hearts/candy/flowers declaration happening here. Peeta has a borderline obssessive love for Katniss throughout most of the trilogy. The way I read the story, by the end of the first Hunger Games, she returns the feeling. Though hesitant to think why she does the things she does, or to state it aloud, she expresses it in so many different ways throughout the remainder of the trilogy, there really is no doubt. Despite the fact that she is suffering major PTSD, she agrees to take on the stress of being the symbol of revolution and take a front line role to bring him back. Regardless of the amount of trauma they both endure, they still eventually turn back to each other. Gale was a strong character, but he had not gone through what Katniss did in the arena and would never have been able to understand that part of her. The time she spends clinging to him and avoiding Peeta is essentially an attempt to return to the person she was before the games (which was never going to happen). Peeta was the walking, living, breathing reminder of the trauma endured. I thought it telling that Peeta returned to Region 12. Like Gale, he could have gone anywhere when it was all over, yet he went where Katniss was. Really, Katniss, Peeta and Haymitch needed each other to become human again (or as human as they were ever going to be). Katniss reminded me of uncles I had who, when they returned from war, sat in a darkened room, staring at a wall day after day for over a year before they could handle being amongst the living again.I'll admit part of me would have liked President Snow's demise to be more than it was. Considering the amount of suffering he caused, part of me is bloodthirsty enough to have wanted him to suffer a great deal more. There are also characters I would have liked to survive (Finnick, Cinna, and Prim to name a few), but their deaths helped to illustrate the randomness and unfairness of death in wartime.There are parts of this story we'll never get to see because it is told from Katniss' point of view. We see only what she sees and know only what she thinks is going on. I, for one, would be interested in knowing more about events of the story from Peeta and/or Haymitch's point of view. Peeta's fight back from his memory hijacking would be an intriguing read.Ultimately, I found this book engaging, infuriating, exhausting, and funny all at the same time. To have had Katniss serene and sweetly declaring life to be sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows would have been absurd. She is with a husband (partner?) whom she loves and is utterly devoted to. She has two children she loves, but is worried what they will think when they know the role their parents played in the past. She and Peeta are happy, but remain somewhat haunted which is perfectly realistic for what the characters have gone through.

When you are thinking through it as you read it, and thinking about it long after you’ve read the last word on the last page.I had little to no expectations when I first started reading the Hunger Games Trilogy. If a book is trending and seems interesting, I will add it to my “to read” list. This is how I first started reading Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games. After finishing Mockingjay, I was blown away. All I could think was, how many of the YA readers will understand the nuances of Collins’ message?She hooked you in with the “will she or won’t she” scenario. “Will she or won’t she” pick Peeta or Gale? “Will she or won’t she” survive a game that does not allow for love to shine through? Those questions get you through the first book, and possibly half way through the second book, but those same questions are a moot point with Mockingjay.Mockingjay stripped you of your hopeless romantic naiveté. There is no room for romance when the world is collapsing around you. There is barely room to breathe. There are no good guys or bad guys, only survivors. Mockingjay asks difficult moral questions: can man ever hold seats of power without corruption? Can war ever actually solve a dispute? At what price is man willing to pay for absolute power?I won’t even go into Collins’ varied symbolisms. Part of the pleasure of reading is finding them yourselves and asking yourself what the author is telling you, the reader. It becomes a communication between the author and the reader. It makes the novel Mockingjay even more important because it is written for younger readers, our future, those that will decide the world events of tomorrow. Collins does all this without a lecture, without loosing her characters or her plot, she has crafted an incredibly well written story that I would gladly recommend to anyone who asks.After I finished reading Mockingjay I had the same feeling as I had when I finished reading The Lord of the Flies so many years ago. Yes, I am comparing Mockingjay to a classic. There is no way around it. Mockingjay, like Lord of the Flies, asks you deep moralistic questions through the point of view of young characters. This is simply another great novel that makes you go hmmm.My favorite quotes from Mockingjay:“Frankly, our ancestors don’t seem much to brag about. I mean, look at the state they left us in, with the wars and the broken planet. Clearly, they didn’t care about what would happen to the people who came after them.”“It’s a saying from thousands of years ago, written in a language called Latin about a place called Rome,” he explains. “Panem et Circuses translates into ‘Bread and Circuses’. The writer was saying in return for full bellies and entertainment, his people had given up their political responsibilities and therefore their power.”“Something is significantly wrong with a creature that sacrifices its children’s lives to settle its differences.”

Imagine a lottery. It’s sort of like a draft lottery they had during the Viet Nam War. It’s sort of like the lottery in Shirley Jackson’s short story where the winner is stoned to death. There are two “winners” in this Hunger Games lottery, a girl and a boy. Actually they are selected - drafted. Their names are pulled out at random. They get to compete with eleven other boys and eleven other girls in a war- games-type arena. There can only be one winner in the Hunger Games - the person still alive at the end of the games. We follow Katniss, a girl from District Twelve, the poorest district, and Peeta, the baker’s son, from the same district. Peeta has had a crush on Katniss since she was five years old. She owes him for giving her bread when her family was starving. She feels she should repay this debt. Now they might be forced to kill each other. The pageantry leading up to the games at times resembles a beauty contest, at times resembles training for participation in a less-lethal sport and at times it resembles preparation for a bullfight. This is a terrifying story, but it’s also a life enhancing a story as the 24 children (ages 12 to 18) in the games sometimes form alliances based on friendship or need. It’s hard to trust anyone knowing that person might soon become your killer. There’s are lessons in survival here. There’s also romance as Katniss isn’t sure if she loves Peeta, but she cares for him enough to fight for his survival as well as her own.

To be honest, I'm not a huge Eric Carle fan. I like the books, but they aren't our go to's. However, this one really stands out. I love this one so much, because my 17 month old loves it. It's perfect for him, because it encourages interaction. He loves animals and all the pages have different things animals do, for you to copy. Touch your head, bend your neck, touch your toes, etc. He loves for us to read the captions, look at the simple pictures, and then copy what's being done. Perfect learning tool as we're teaching him what all the body parts are. It's a great size board book and perfect for his little hands. Really good quality - sturdy, excellent page thickness.

I bought this book for my speech-language therapy practice and I am very pleased by how applicable it is to my students' goals. The book contains repeating phrases "Can you do it?" and "I can do it" which has been helpful for question asking, social communication in groups, and expanding M.L.U. Many of my kids don't get the actions at first, but they nonetheless enjoy reading an interactive book.

Great board book for this Grandma to read with the little ones. Parents report this book is a bedtime favorite three weeks later. Apparently the three year old has it memorized and "helps" the infant do the motions. Parents substitute toys so baby isn't too abused.

Ordered these for my wife's pre-K class. Did not realize that the books would be so small. Well, my wife can be assured that no one else will have exactly the same books that she has in her classroom...

There is not much to say about this book except that it is short and silly.Every child I read this book to enjoys it for different reasons.Some of the children love the colorful illustrations and wonderful artwork. Other children enjoy the silly storyline and there are the children who love acting it out.Overall a great book that attracts many different children.

As usual, great quality from this publisher. My son beats up his board books but these same to last.Eric Carle has an amazing way with illustrations but I thought the story was different (I thought it was teaching kids what each body part, but this is more about what they can do -- if that makes sense). It's a cute book but not sure I would buy it again (but that's on me for not knowing the story).

I bought it for my 5mo son and he loves it. Of course he doesn't understand the content yet, but he enjoys the illustration. This book has colors, big and simple illustrations and many pages (I've found lots of children books have few pages that could be finished within a minute). I'm sure he will enjoy it even more as he grows up.

This book is amazing!! My son is OBSESSED with the brown bear series. I had this book out during a play date and it entertained two year olds and five year olds to copy the images. It is a short book like all other Brown Bear books that asks the reader “can they do” what ever the animal is doing. I chose the board book because toddlers like to rip pages and it is durable.
