Great look into the bond market. I doubt Mr. Milken would have been prosecuted had he not been a threat to the Wall Street establishment.Just saying that the SEC mostly seems to exist to protect Wall Street from Wall Street. There was an interesting part in the book where congress was debating weather to enact more legislation in regard to the bond market and they felt it was a waste of time because in time the investment community would figure out way to work around it. Also there was a part in the book about a Reagan Administration study that determined that the wild west of the bond market was just fine when two university studies said otherwise in their testimony to congress.

In this book, Connie Bruck describes the rise and fall of Michael Milken, a man who singlehandedly built the junk bond empire of the 80's. Junk bonds are bonds with a low credit rating (below investment grade), issued by firms at very high interest rates to compensate the investor for the higher chance of default. In mid and late 80's, these bonds were used heavily to finance large corporate takeovers, completely changing the landscape on Wall Street.The book is split into three major parts: Spreading the Gospel, Pawns Capture Kings, and The Zenith and the Fall. The first part describes Milken's background and how he became involved in the junk bond business. While at UC Berkeley, Milken came across a study by W. Braddock Hickman, which found that a low-grade bond portfolio, if very large, well diversified, and held over a long period of time, was a higher-yielding investment than a high-grade portfolio. Milken became fascinated by this idea and started his career as a bond trader at Drexel in the early 70's, while finishing his business degree at Wharton. The rest is history: throughout the next twenty years, Milken essentially took over Drexel and had unlimited reign over not only the firm, but essentially all of Wall Street (ironically, from his Beverly Hills office in California).In the second portion of the book, Bruck describes how Milken created and supported the corporate raider culture. Bruck presents three case studies. The first is about Nelson Peltz and Peter May, who took over National Can. Peltz is arguably Milken's most amazing transformation - he created a corporate raider out of nobody. The second case, the most interesting one, is about Carl Icahn and his acquisition of TWA. Icahn went from quick profits through greenmail (threatening to buy a company - and then being bought out at a premium) to actually buying companies. With TWA, he used incredible negotiating tactits and made deals with unions behind management's back, which ultimately let him take over the firm. Icahn was very independent from Milken, unlike most of Milken's corporate raider Â¨pawns.Â¨ The third case is about Ron Perelman and his epic battle for the prestigious Revlon.The last part of the book dwells on just how powerful Milken and Drexel had become. The junk bond market had grown over one decade from $15B to $125B at the end of 1986. Since the 80's saw very low default rates and a tremendous bull market, Milken's empire worked very well - there was nothing to challenge it. Milken perpetuated his machine by overfunding each deal, giving raiders extra cash that they would then have to invest back into junk bonds (so as to cover the carrying cost of the debt) - in this way, Milken made sure there was always a growing market for his junk bonds.If you were not one of Milken's clients (and sometimes, even if you were), you trembled in fear, waiting for a corporate raider to emerge with a 13D filing, stating that he owns more than 5% of your company's stock. In some cases, Milken directly threatened companies, forcing them to do business with Drexel (as in the case of Wickes). Even legislation failed to stop corporate raiders. While the Fed created some rules restricting the use of debt in hostile takeovers, they were easily bypassed through shell companies and preferred stock (which generally acts as debt).Bruck did an excellent job with this book. It is very thorough and interesting to read. It is amazing to see all the details of these various deals and take-overs. While it is clear that Bruck looks down on Milken's actions, she tries to stay objective - and makes comments like Â¨this reporter views this practice as extortion.Â¨ In the Afterword, she furthermore makes a case for some of the positive things that Milken has achieved, such as providing funding to companies that couldn't get it elsewhere, and creating stronger leaner firms.My biggest gripe with the book is that it feels very unfinished. Bruck barely mentions the RJR Nabisco deal, in which Drexel was a big player. She also doesn't describe what happened to Milken after charges were brought against him by the SEC (including his jail time, etc.). She doesn't talk about Drexel's collapse, and she claims that the effects of Milken's machine will only be seen many years from now, when some of the long-term junk-fueled debt comes due. I understand that the book was written and published immediately after Milken's fall. However, it has been almost twenty years since that, and a new edition would surely add a lot to the story.In conclusion, I really enjoyed the book. It is a great read for anyone interested in Wall Street history of the 80's. While it may feel unfinished, it provides amazing detail on the rise of Michael Milken and his corporate raiders.Pros:+ tremendous amount of detail, from characters to numbers+ great use and definition of finance terminology+ exciting story, filled with funny anecdotes and breathtaking accounts of corporate battles+ covers not only Milken, but several other characters, including the major corporate raidersCons:- feels unfinished: could really use another edition with further history on Milken and Drexel

Written at a time when Drexel was at its peak, it was a groundbreaking, highly acclaimed book.Connie Bruck ranks along with Joe Nocera as one of the world's best business writers. This book is tremendously readable and gives a balanced but insightful look at Michael Milken.I came away from the book with the idea that Milken was a genius who earned his great fortune with 18 hour work days. and I still believe he had a tremendous and positive contribution to the world.the Some of my friends came away from the book with the idea that Milken was a horrible human being who was ruining the country. This goes into excellent detail about junk bonds and Milken's empire. An excellent read, and eye opening since the only story we were incorrectly spoon fed is how junk bonds were always bad, considering the large numbers of businesses who were financed by them.

I really liked this book. It was good on briefing myself on the era of junk bonds and the junk bond king himself and the origination of IO and PO strips for tax loopholes. I definitely recommend this book.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable puzzle-book, with a variety of puzzles ranging from easy to hard (some of the most difficult puzzles took me multiple attempts over multiple days).There are 40 total puzzles. Quite a few puzzles involve plugging solutions into a grid, and 16 are grid based logic puzzles along the lines of Baron's logic puzzles. Many of these grid based logic puzzles are challenging -- most clues negate possibilities, rather than outright tell you associations, and many require you to take into account another element that is not accounted for on the grid (for instance, you have to consult floor plans to determine which floors people are staying on, keep track of who is right or left handed, when people were traveling, etc.)Almost all puzzles center upon a group of puzzle-loving people who are staying together on an island. There is some text connecting various puzzles and parts of the book, but with one exception, the puzzles (including the last one) have no direct connection to the other puzzles (for instance, the identity of the murderer in a given puzzle is insignificant to solving the subsequent puzzles, and you are never asked to consult past solutions when solving puzzles).All in all, this puzzle book is well worth the money, and provided hours of challenging entertainment.

This is not your average collection of unrelated logic puzzles. This is an immersive story with embedded first-class puzzles where solving the puzzles reveals more of the story. The puzzles can be quite hard, but they are all reasonable (like a logic puzzle should be!).This reminds me of the Professor Layton games in book form. If you don't know, Professor Layton games are also stories with embedded first-class puzzles (although not just logic puzzles). Good for your brain, and a lot of fun!Highly recommended for all logic puzzle fans!

Excellent quality puzzle book! Especially for the price (just under $9 at the time of this review). Much nicer than the monthly magazine publications, with sturdy covers, thick paper, spiral bound for easy handling. The book has an interesting premise, and there is an over-arching story in addition to the actual puzzles, which vary in style and level of difficulty, and don't have to be solved in printed order. I'd like to see other books like this, I'd definitely buy them!

This book seems very involved from the very first puzzle. The conjectures and assumptions the writing forces me to make sometimes feel far-fetched and overwrought, mainly due to the vagueness in the clues given for each puzzle. While the book is really fascinating, engaging, and intriguing, it's also proving quite cumbersome and frustrating. This book's requisite form of logic demands proof by assumption. For example, one puzzle states that what guests claim may or may not be true, however to solve the puzzle one must absolutely assume some to be true, that is, not guilty, without really being sure. This is frustrating and demanding in a way that doesn't always feel rewarding. The book still seems fun, and I'm thinking that as progress is made, the puzzles will begin to make more sense and require less conjecture.

I love the variety of logic puzzles given in this book. They are all logic puzzles, but not all of them incorporate the grid that one tends to associate with logic puzzles. Some require you to use a separate diagram (like a map or floor plan) and others require you to deduce the true statement from a pair of statements. In addition, a majority of the puzzles require you to "look beyond" what is given in the actual clues to eliminate possibilities, which I thought was a fun challenge. For this reason, beginners will find this puzzle book to be too frustrating, so I don't recommend it for those people.It can be slightly challenging to understand the set-up of a few of the puzzles because of the complexity of the assumptions, but I was able to figure out what I was supposed to do after re-reading the directions several times. There was only one puzzle that I couldn't start, and less than a handful that I couldn't complete on the first attempt. The puzzles overall are set up quite nicely and all have a unique solution that can be found through trial and error if need be. The only exception to this (that I found) is the puzzle called â€œThe Puzzle Gameâ€ which has one error given in the last clue. The clue says that â€œthere were two puzzles that Jessica and Karen both attempted but failed to solve.â€ The clue should say three instead of two.As a side note, this book is very well made. The paper is heavy, the graphics are well done, the spiral binding is convenient, the font is large and easy to read, and the solutions in the back are comprehensive and easy to understand. Overall, this a quality book and I recommend it to those people who find joy in working out their brain with logic puzzles. In my opinion, this book is undervalued and should certainly be selling at a much higher price than what it is currently being sold for (just $7.16!)

Wow, I feel dumb doing these, but they're still interesting. LOL. Good puzzles, but even with the answer key in front of me, I still have a hard time understanding how they deduced all they did sometimes.

Very cool concept. I'm maybe a quarter of the way through, and I really like it so far. Nice to have a little story background to go with the logic puzzles. There are a variety of puzzle types, which is nice. Some are harder than others, but all fall within the range of "challenging but not impossible." The book itself is nice quality, not too flimsy and I like the spiral binding for its lay-flat ability.

This is not your average logic puzzle book! With an intriguing story to go along with each set of puzzles, it's entertaining, fun, and challenging. Puzzles range from easy to difficult with complete solutions in the back. Great book!

The latest installment of "The Lovers" is so good, I hated for the book to end. Josh and Cameron and the rest of the Thornton family along with assorted friends work to solve a murdet. The man who was killed had a dark secret, which hastened his demise. If, you follow the series, you know w that JJ and Poppy are getting married. There is a lot of mayhem, family crises, and interfamily joy and angst. Pick up this book and prepare to spending a few hours with some of my favorite characters.

We're back in the Lovers in Crime with Cameron and Joshua with another wonderful mystery.I have to say there were several times early on, I thought I had figured out who done it, but I was wrong.I can't get enough of any of Lauren Carr's series of books. Keep writing.

As I finished the latest book by international best-selling Lauren Carr, I found myself thinking back over the entire book, and found that, for me, one of the most impressive, and, therefore, important, parts of Carr's book is that she never stops with just the meat of the book. She serves an appetizer, a main course, and then a delightfully delicious dessert for her readers. This time, throughout the book, a couple, Poppy and J.J. are preparing for their wedding, and have merged it with the opening of their new Bed and Breakfast! I'll leave the details of that latest adventure, with Tracy, J.J., sister, as a partner, out; however, the simple pleasure and enjoyment of being involved with all the family activities, concerns, and fears, especially about finding Poppy's dream wedding dress, is a special bonus that Carr always provides in addition to a fantastic, impossible to solve, murder mystery... And, the added bit of ghostly attendance to these arrangements was simply...adorable!The lead-in to the murder mystery disrupts a joyous touch of intimacy between Cameron Gates, a homicide lieutenant with the PA State Police and her husband, Joshua Thornton, the County Prosecuting Attorney, one of the first set of lovers to be introduced in this fascinating series. As an admirer of a strong female leading character, I've an avid fan of Cameron. In basic police case management, she reminds me of another favorite cop, J.D. Robb's, Eve Dallas.But a body set on fire in the woods of a small farm in Hookstown discovered by the elderly couple who live there, has Cameron moving fast to get to the new scene. That couple happens to be the grandparents of Madison, one of J.J.'s old girlfriends. Let's just say that J.J. has had many girls fall for him in the past. He thought he could play the field by telling the truth--that he was not interested in a long-term relationship at the time. Of course, we all know that doesn't stop a girl from...hoping... In fact, two of those young women had become enemies during the period when J.J. played the field...And one of them was the daughter of the man who'd been tossed and set on fire.Ironically, the wife and the daughter, the other of J.J.'s girlfriends, reported that their husband/father had not returned from his last trip as a trucker hauling cargo...Carr successfully dangles potential crime solutions for readers, then yanks them away to move on to another option--leaving us, her readers, trying to deal and, hopefully follow the many options she's presented. And, in the meantime, bring in most of the Thornton legal family officials, much to the chagrin of a new State police officer who has been assigned to work for...not with, Cameron Gates. Like many readers, I would imagine, I have come to trust that Carr will bring to her readers the best possible and most complicated mystery for us to struggle with. Me, by now, I just sit back and enjoy each twist or turn that she is so rich in developing.Of course, there are many animal characters complementing the story, but there is one surprise attendee for the wedding ceremony that is both heartwarming...and hilarious! Carr is one of the best mystery writers around. With a family orientation that is based upon love, extended family, and concern for others, well, you just cannot go wrong in picking up any of her books. This one, especially, should be considered. I hope Lauren Carr never runs out of material. Each one of the stories in her series are unique and not run of the mill. The Root of Murder is no exception. I guessed the identity of the killer 5 times in this book and was wrong each time!! Keep up the good work. I can barely wait for the next one!

KATHLEEN LONG BOSTROM has been an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA) since 1983. Kathleen has written over 40 books, which have sold well over two million copies in the 16 years since her first book was published. Regardless of your religious preference, I feel it is important for young children to at least know the stories in the bible - you do not have to agree or believe them, but knowledge of them is critical - such as what is Easter - what is Christmas, etc. Our grandchildren range in age from 3 to 18 and none of them regularly attend church, but we have given each of them this book and hopefully our children will read them to their children and will probably learn a bit themselves. The stories are well written and easy to follow. This is the least grandparents can do in an effort to better educate children who can then decided later in life what they believe,etc

My 4 year old can't get enough of the bible stories in this book! We have used other bibles but none got the reaction this one gets. My little one can tell me most of these stories based on the pictures at this point and she still wants me to read them over and over. We have several books from this author and all are great but this is certainly among our houses' favorites! We only read this on nights when we have some time because we always end up reading more than we intended :)

This is a delightful book perfect for bedtime reading with your children! The stories are engaging and the illustrations are beautiful. There are nine stories from the Old Testament and nine stories from the New Testament. Each one one provides vivid details with language children can easily understand. We love Kathy's books!

A beautifully written book filled with lovely illustrations. This book brings Bible stories to life with descriptive and lyrical writing. Clearly the author cares deeply about the stories of the Bible and this book will go a long way to making children care for those stories as well. A wonderful read and a must buy for any personal library

Applying coconut oil to the eye to clear up cataracts? I loved this book! Having just visited my ophthalmologist, it made me realize how much she could learn about nutrition and eye health. As soon as I finish the book, guess who is getting it?!

I wouuld give it a million stars if possible, EXCELLENT book/advice. I've start the coconut oil in my eyes and they feel so much better since I stop the eye drops. Bought both the Kindle edition and a book. Now I'll be able to loan the book out to others. Really a good book, thank you to the author. Very easy to read and understand.

This book gives real and practical ideas about what to do to bring about healing. I loaned the book to my naturopath and we designed a plan for me to follow. Further following his suggestions about diet affecting inflammation, we've "gone keto." I also picked up his ketogenic diet support book which is simple (most on this topic are not) and easy to follow.

Disclosure: I was contacted by the author, who sent me a review copy of this book free of charge.The ability to see is something we usually take for granted until we start having problems. Loss of vision due to cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration becomes more common as we age, but eye problems can develop throughout the life cycle. I've had several eye disorders: bilateral strabismus ("lazy eye") requiring surgery when I was seven, medium myopia (nearsightedness) since around that age, and most recently presbyopia ("old eyes" -- farsightedness after the age of 40). I also have a strong family history of glaucoma, so doing whatever i can to preserve the sight I have is extremely important to me.Dr. Bruce Fife is a naturopath, certified nutritionist, and director of the Coconut Research Center. He's a prolific author, having written 20 books based on his extensive review of the literature on the benefits of coconut oil and its medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs). In his latest book, Stop Vision Loss Now!, he provides evidence that a well-balanced, nutrient-rich, very-low-carbohydrate diet supplemented with coconut oil may help to prevent and even reverse some of the most common eye disorders associated with aging.The major concept of the book is that the eyes are an extension of the brain, so whatever keeps the brain healthy and well nourished will do the same for the eyes. There's a growing body of research demonstrating that maintaining blood glucose and insulin levels as close to normal as possible can help preserve brain function and reduce the risk for Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. According to Dr. Fife, many researchers now believe that although increased intraocular pressure is involved in glaucoma, its primary cause is that nerve cells within the brain become damaged, similar to what happens in Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. He explains that coconut oil increases brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a gene that stimulates the growth, maintenance, and repair of these nerve cells.. Dr. Fife suggests that the increase in ketone levels that occurs in response to MCT can protect eye health and improve or potentially reverse degenerative eye disorders as a result of increased BDNF. In addition to age-related conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, coconut oil can also be used for dry eyes, eye infections, and other non-vision-limiting conditions.*In addition to generous amounts of healthy fats and moderate amounts of protein, Dr. Fife recommends including a wide variety of nonstarchy vegetables and berries to reduce oxidative stress that can lead to eye disease. He advises selecting from three different levels of carbohydrate intake based on blood glucose levels and provides a sample menu for a typical day, along with guidance on meal planning and dining out. Lists of protective low-carbohydrate foods and a comprehensive net carb counter are included. I agree with his suggestion to add coconut oil slowly, one tablespoon per day to start, in order to prevent GI symptoms and determine personal tolerance.I learned several things I didn't know as a result of reading this book, including:Adding coconut oil to vegetables improves absorption of their nutrients more than any other fat and does the best job of preserving the antioxidants they containAerobic exercise is the most beneficial type of activity for increasing BDNF in the retinaTopical application of coconut water may improve cataractsI found Stop Vision Loss Now! very well-researched, comprehensive, and interesting. Dr. Fife has a gift for making advanced nutrition concepts and physiological processes easy for the average reader with an interest in health to understand. It was truly a pleasure read for me. There are many personal accounts throughout the book, including the author's story of how he reversed his own early-stage glaucoma. Although there isn't a lot of published research on the benefits of coconut oil for eye disorders, he makes a great case for including it as part of a whole-foods-based, low-carbohydrate diet in Stop Vision Loss Now!*Regardless of whether these changes in diet and lifestyle improve your vision, if you have an eye disorder, you should continue to see your ophthalmologist at least once a year for monitoring.

Wonderful Book, Packed full of great information if you want to save your eye site. I wish I'd gotten it sooner but it is still a great help even though I'm had to have a cataract surgery already. There is more to our eyes that just the lense.

The information in this book has triggered an attempt to follow the suggestions. Already I have improvement in my vision (after about 2+ weeks of using them and I am 80+ year old woman. Excellent book, Dr. Fife! Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down! Knowing how a Keto diet affects literally every function of the body is priceless. His writing style and ability to explain everything in layman's terms makes understanding the connection between health and diet so much easier to follow. I highly recommend this book as a reference piece that could change or save your life or the life of someone you know. Dr. Fife is one of the most well informed doctors you will ever find on nutrition so it's a no-brainer to purchase and read ALL of Dr. Fife's books.

This is the first book by Dr. Fife that I completely read. "Stop Vision Loss Now!" contains some very useful insights that I now use. OTOH, it isn't perfect. While I use coconut oil every day, other aspects of his ketogenic diet leave me cold. I doubt if anybody anywhere follows a strict ketogenic lifestyle long-term, excepting maybe a castaway. In fairness to Dr. Fife, he does point out different aspects of a ketogenic lifestyle that many people *can* embrace and still reap a benefit.
