About the Author

Donald L. Pavia earned his BS degree in chemistry from Reed College and his PhD in organic chemistry from Yale University. In 1970, he joined the faculty at Western Washington University as Assistant Professor and now holds the rank of Professor Emeritus. He is the coauthor of two organic laboratory books that include techniques and experiments: INTRODUCTION TO ORGANIC LABORATORY TECHNIQUES: A MICROSCALE APPROACH (Cengage Learning), and A SMALL SCALE APPROACH TO ORGANIC LABORATORY TECHNIQUES (Cengage Learning), as well as MICROSCALE AND MACROSCALE TECHNIQUES IN THE ORGANIC LABORATORY (Cengage Learning), which highlights techniques to be used with a faculty member's own experiments. Probably one of the few textbooks that I can say is truly worth the investment. The explanations for the different types of spectroscopy are clear and examples given are very helpful in the determination of MS, IR, NMR, and UV spectra. A definite keeper. I kind of wish a hard copy of the book existed for increased durability. That reminds me, I need to get this back from a friend who also wished the book was cheaper so he would have his own copy. Instead he had to borrow mine

I've used this book for IR, 1HNMR and 13CNMR. Just make sure to answer all the problems and the answer key for the unsolved ones can be found in Chegg study.I didn't like how this book approach Mass spectrometry; I found more in the instrumental side and I needed fragmantion explanation so I used Silverstein for the MS portion. Bottom line, highly recommend for organic structure determination course.

This book is probably the best introductory reference on spectroscopy currently available, and I've checked out pretty much every book on the market right now. I'm a chemist, and this book got me through my senior synthesis and spectroscopy lab. Proton and carbon-13 NMR, IR, GC/MS, and UV/Vis are all covered in the book. It includes many handy tables of characteristic shifts for NMR, characteristic absorbances for IR and UV/Vis, and a nifty table on common GC/MS fragments by m/e. The chapter on 2D NMR is lousy, but that's not really introductory material anyhow. The UV/Vis chapter is kind of cursory, but UV/Vis isn't all that useful. This is a book that I intend to hang on to for a while.

A great book for anyone who has dabbled in spectroscopy and would like to learn. Extremely useful for identifying NMR peaks caused by heteroatoms. The older editions are just as good as the new one and for a better price. I had one copy stolen during the semester. I didn't blink an eye at buying a new copy.

This is the most important book anybody who has any associate with spectroscopy will ever buy. It has beautiful spectroscopy tables in the back so that you know exactly what comes at that frequency, the text is terrific, and they have examples in the back to help solidify the knowledge. If you're taking spectroscopy or just need a lab IR, NMR, MS reference, buy it. If you hate books and want to fail, shoot for another text.

I thought that this book was actually really expensive for being a paperback but now I realize that the value is not in the construction of the book but the construction of the material inside. This book takes a rather difficult and intense subject matter and breaks it down into an easy and digestible concept. I would recommend this book to any aspiring chemist.

Very helpful & great for learning the different spectroscopic techniques that are most frequently used by chemists. Lots of spectra & problems to test your knowledge & gauge where you are.

This came quickly and in good condition. However, it would be nice if science books were cheaper. This is in color, which is nice but adds to the cost of printing (and ultimately your price). Being a science major is expensive when you have to buy books each semester. This was better priced than in my college bookstore, but still a lot. The book itself was written well, and helped with the class (analytical chemistry).

Great story about an awful event and provides a thorough review of how cases proceed and navigate. The problem is the authors’ writing style. They repeat themselves to ad nauseam. Likewise, the authors struggle with paragraph development. Many themes take a hard left mid paragraph, only to be repeated three more times. Tragic story and educational value: 5 stars. Writing style: Two and 3/4 stars. It was a GREAT 250 page book that lasted 400 pages.

Class Action is one of the best books I have ever read. I simply could not put it down once I started reading it. The story, itself, is gripping. If this were a work of fiction, it would stretch the imagination to believe that such things could happen. The fact that this is a true story just stuns the reader to the depth of the soul. But, beyond the nature of the story, is the excellent writing. It is as engrossing as the best novel - cohesive, fast paced & intelligble. There is just enough legal background and explanation given to make the events understandable to the lay person without making the book a lesson in Civil Procedure. I cannot recommend this book too highly. Thank you to the authors for bringing this story to the public in such an empathetic and understandable way, and to the women of the story who changed the lives of all human beings for the better.

I assume that you will have seen the Movie first. I would have never heard of this book, without references in the DVD. BUT it is not necessary that you see the movie first. AND if you see the movie after reading the book be prepared for differences. But aside from comparisons, this is a terrific read about the first successful Sexual Harrassment case in the USA. It is set in the North Country made famous by Mr. Zimmerman. In fact some of the scenes and some of the characters are from Hibbing. Hero is one of the many misused words in Americana. But hero could be safely applied to the Lawyers who defended Lois Jenen.

This is a great read, a page turner, and heartbreaking saga of women's endurance and sacrafice.

My wife was high school best friends with the heroine of this story. Ergo, I have access to more complete information than revealed in this story.Still, it is much more fact than fiction, despite the 'poetic license' sometimes exhibited by the author. Sometimes the author was simply denied access to the whole truth. In the end, the story unwinds in this book much as it did in real life, but some of the details aren't always right on target.This was a landmark legal case that changed things on a national scale, and as such it can be viewed as history.And the history as put forth in this story is clearly more accurate than what was presented in the movie "North Country", which is another telling of the same tale.The writing is good enough to carry the book, even if it were totally fiction. But it's not -- I can recommend it.

This author has done a lovely job of describing Norse mythology. When I was a child, I devoured a book on Norse myths, and these stories--from my Kindle version--are very familiar. But there was new material. There are some sexual aspects that of course did not appear in my child's book. There were new stories that I hadn't heard at all, like the story of Rolf Krake. I appreciated the author's listing of sources, which I shall probably never read, but they indicated that he had done his research and gave me confidence in what I was reading. It was also interesting to compare these stories with those that underlay Wagner's Ring Cycle operas; some things were familiar, some were not (for example, the operas begin and end with the Rhine maidens.) I was also intrigued at the end with the new world that resulted after Ragnarok. (The author suggests that since an original author, Snorri Sturlesson, was a Christian, he may have incorporated Christian beliefs into his writing, possibly like this new world. Of course, that belief may really have been present.) It is also interesting to compare Norse mythology with writings of, say, J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis, who constructed other fictional epics. There are not many similarities, but a few.

I found this book very interesting. These myths about Norse gods were really fascinating and complex. Matt makes the connections to each story as clear as possible, but since some primary sources are missing some questions remain. Which make reading mythology so much fun.

I love these series books, and this is interesting and cause to dig further for information and the bigger picture! My first Norse reading, but definitely not my last!

The great historian Leopold von Ranke wanted these sources to be used to tell actually how events happened. I went to the websites mentioned where there is a wealth of information.It was a good book to read on a new topic & when the name Vikings was used I really liked it.There has been several shows related to Vikings either on History Channel or other networks.So , I found out why not give something new to read & research which makes us a more knowledgeable person.Well done Captivating History!

I liked this book. I've always been interested in the differences between mythologies. I think it could have been a bit longer, more in-depth. But it was well written and informative. I read a review on here before I got my copy that said it jumped around too much. I can see where someone would feel that way. It did jump, but I was able to follow it.

Nelson presents a riveting examination of the issues and actions leading up to the events of Pearl Harbor, which one Japenese pilot described as changing "an island of dreams into a living hell." The brutal descriptions of what both Japanese and American servicemen went through during the December 7 attack are at times almost too horrifying to read, much less comprehend. Nelson recounts numerous tales of heroism, chaos, bravado, confusion and sheer terror. Anyone with an interest in history, especially an unvarnished accounting of what actually transpired in Hawaii that sparked American's involvement in World War II, should not miss an opportunity to read Nelson's very detailed account that puts the reader uncomfortably and squarely right in the middle of the hellish activity.

Nelson's book is one of the best I've read on the Pearl Harbor attack, most of which touch only briefly on the lead up to the attack, and almost never go beyond the immediate few days after it. The sections on the attack and bombing itself comprise only about 30-40% of this book. Nelson takes us through a well laid out pre-history of US/Japan relations, going back to the mid-19th century. That is not to say he bogs the reader down in minutiae. His narrative throughout is well paced and very engaging. With that you are presented with a well formed context for the events that brought us to December 7, 1941. The sections on the bombing itself were riveting and read like an action film. But more engrossing were the pages on the clean up, medical and rescue efforts. Gut wrenching to be sure, these stories provide a real sense of what it might have been like. Then he takes us through the months following the bombing, including the early successes of the Japanese military and their ultimate downfall. Filled with first-person accounts and a strong handle on the historical perspective, this book is a must read for any fan of history, in particular, WWII history.

They say that people who can't be bothered with small jobs, can't be trusted with big jobs...a corollary in writing would be if you can't get the small details rightr, can we trust you to get the big picture right. That's my opinion of this book. For instance...did you know that the "...Japanese had a two-foot long, oxygen-powered torpedo..." (page 57)...or that the Japanese had a target coded "AH", which "Rochefort guessed that AH was Midway..." (page 385)...or that "...ten Devastators from Midway attacked." These are a couple of the numerous errors I found in this book. Sentence construction should also be watched closely...my favorite example is found on page 352..."Its victorious element, for the first time in that history, were planes launched from ships carrying explosives." Word choice is also important, this book has numerous uses of the word "commandeering" instead of "commanding" and uses "taxi" to describe the take-off run of an aircraft. Maybe I'm being too critical...but I don't think so. If you want to read a great book about Pearl Harbor, there are lots of others available.

So hard to believe that this is such an old book. The age adds to the book as the players had details fresh in their memories. Morgensterm must have been a brave man in order to criticize the President and his War Counsil so soon after the war. Well worth reading.

with the greatest generation fading into history, it's important to document their sacrifice and what lead up to the outbreak of world war two. if only we can get folks off their phones long enough to read it. mr nelson certainly did some meticulous research. great read.

well written -- revealing what president Roosevelt and the inner workings of Washington really did to lead the u.s. into war with japan. The type used to print this book could have been larger so that it would have been easier to read.

My 3 year old son LOVES it. Highly recommend for kids who like vehicles. Doesn't get much better than vehicles and Christmas combined. Beautiful illustrations too.

My toddler loves any big trucks or construction vehicles. We read where do diggers sleep at night quit often and this Christmas edition is a great add on to our growing book collection. The only down side is I thought the whole book was hard, not just the cover hard with soft pages.

This book was written as a prerequisite for parents to read before enrolling their child in the Johns Hopkins childhood epilepsy program. In practically every chapter there are CYA sentences stating, “do not try this on your own”. That is, this book serves the hospital’s purposes. Whether or not it will serve your purposes depends on your needs and what you already know.Childhood epilepsy is most likely the oldest use of the ketogenic diet. But there are several newer uses such as weight loss, cancer and neurological issues.I bought the book because it was referenced in Miriam Kalamian’s book, Keto for Cancer. I was hoping it would give me nitty-gritty details absent in other books. It did not, and that’s a disappointment because one of the medical groups most experienced in keto diets is Hopkins. This reminds me that the real purpose of the Hippocratic Oath (the part usually not mentioned) was restraint of trade. Use the book for its stated purpose, to get your child into Hopkins’ program. Otherwise look elsewhere. There’s much more in Kalamian’s book or that of Ellen Davis.

This book is my bible. My 2yo daughter was seizure free in 6 weeks after starting the Modified Atkins Diet. I would like to see more emphasis on hidden sugars and labels in the next edition. Love, love this book and recommend it every chance I get. Read it cover to cover.

Sugar Busters isn't a popular diet currently,but it was 20 years ago. I've tried Atkins, and most recently, a keto diet, and Sugar Busters is the only one that's do-able for ME. I've lost 29 pounds in 3 months. I was unable on keto and Atkins as I couldn't have carbs the kind of carbs I enjoy. This way of eating, not a diet actually, is similar to a Mediterranean diet and it's very simple to follow. However, slip-ups will really set you back in your weight loss efforts. I know. I cheated with a couple of non-allowable foods and I paid for it with no weight loss for a couple weeks...and then it was hard to turn off the appetite again.I know in the latest book from 2003, the allowed sugar grams were increased from the original diet of 3 grams or less per serving...to what is it now? maybe 5 or 6 grams. I didn't do so well on the higher grams, so I switched back to 3 grams of sugar. Or less. Another trick I learned: The first 3 days are the hardest as far as sugar withdrawal. It's better to eat some extra Triscuits than fall victim to cheating with something not allowed.Here's an example of what I eat.Breakfast: Triscuits with Smucker's natural crunchy peanut butterLunch: A burger and green beans or a burger with a salad and Paul Newman Olive Oil & Vinegar dressingDinner: Small amount of 100% whole wheat pasta (NOTHING with ENRICHED wheat) with my own homemade spaghetti sauce made of crushed tomatoes and lots of herbs and a little parmesan cheese, and another saladDessert: Most of the time an apple with peanut butter, occasionally 1/2 cup of no sugar added ice cream. I found by eating too much ice cream, I did have a few stalls.No weighing, no measuring, just fill your plate but don't mound anything up high.After the first 3 days you WILL lose your appetite. Don't eat just to be eating or just because "it's time". Only eat when you're hungry.Do not cheat, not one bite of anything you aren't supposed to have. Believe me, I know how hard it is to get back on the wagon.I prefer this original version to the newer version: Sugar Busters! Cut Sugar to Trim Fat....but if you want to save money, this cookbook gives a small introduction to Sugar Busters in the front before it gets to the recipe section.But Wait!!! I highly recommend this book; it has TONS of low glycemic recipes and are even better than what you'd find in the Sugar Busters Cookbook (if you're lucky enough to find this in print at a cheap price).Sugarfree Quick & Easy

Like a previous reviewer, I too, was diagnosed with cancer some 15 years ago, At the time I was on the Sugar Busters diet plan, but lost heart after my cancer therapy and went back to my old eating habits. As a result, my cholesterol soared, I gained 70 pounds, was pre diabetic and could hardly get out of my recliner. Aside from my cancer my wife followed the same path and gained 30 pounds. About nine months ago I dusted off my Sugar Busters books and started anew. With Sugar buster and daily exercise (biking and swimming) I have lost 51 pounds, have energy to burn and really enjoy alternating cooking chores with my wife, who, by the way, has lost 24 pounds. For those who doubt the plan, take heart. once you become familiar with your shopping needs, brands to buy and tricks of the trade, you'd be surprised how healthy this plan is. Remember: everything in moderation, portion control, avoid the bad carbs, and exercise. I plan to stay the course with Sugar Busters for my remaining years. This from a 78 year-old man who has a second chance at life.

I have never been on a diet my life, but I was up to 198 lb, which is way over my comfortable weight and around 165 to 175. My doctor recommended this plan because my blood sugar was slightly elevated. I have not stuck to it religiously, but have been faithful to the basics of the plan. I am now down to 174 pounds and feel good in my skin again. It really wasn't that difficult and has basically led me to a simple lifestyle change. I still eat the occasional cake and cookies and it seems to be just fine. I highly recommend this plan as an easy way to lose weight and keep it off. Oh and by the way I have not even started to exercise yet. Maybe I can turn this weight loss into some muscle gain eventually. I am over 50, approaching 60.

I bought this book for my Kindle and I would give it a higher rating if it wasn't for the formatting problems associated with a digital book. This book is fabulous but the formatting problems...may not be fixable, but it is frustrating. I love this book and not being able to see what is under the headings, "Good Breakfast Ideas" and "Breakfast Foods to Avoid" because the formatting shoves it all together is a bit annoying. If you can fix the formatting issues, that would be great!

I enjoyed the original Sugar Busters Book, which led me to purchase this one. I loved the recipes in the first one. I like the recipes in this one. Overall, a great book for anyone interested in eating healthy, cutting down on simple fat gaining carbohydrates and sugars. The recipes are varied, many and for the most part simple to make.

Today is, May 11, 2017. I started Sugar Busters on, March 26th. Lost 26 lbs so far.

I''m from New Orleans, and Steward was my doctor. The book is written by a local, and the recipes are good reresentatives of the culture.

on the diet now. it really works and it helps you to live a different lifestyle of eating. I love it!

The book speaks to outsourcing in a reasonable fashion with some good suggestion, processes and methodologies however it does have some holes and some coverage areas that could use some improvement (holes - driving correct provider behavior, improvement areas - managing the deal, innovation, exit planning, etc.) and some processes that need work. Also it has some age to a few suggestions - e.g. some items in this book were being used in the 1980's. All in all an ok book.

"Vested Outsourcing" is tough to put down. Kate has nailed the age-old operational struggle of competing goals, interests, and priorities through her real-world examples. The book boils down the challenges and solutions into easy-to-understand, relatable principles & strategies that can be applied in virtually any outsourcing environment & relationship.Kate’s vision is remarkable. I’m fortunate that I've been able to watch Kate, from her Stream International days, as she's transformed the outsourcing, supply chain, and logistics environment with her vision, grasp of the landscape, and innovative thought, insights, & operational results. Her ability to break complex issues & challenges down to their simplest solutions is evidenced by the book’s conclusion of the five basic rules for outsourcing success.This is a “must read” for practitioners and their executives assure complete organizational buy-in in this revolutionary outsourcing transformation.Well done, Kate and team!

Very insightful. Full of wonderful examples on the do's and don'ts of outsourcing.

She uses PERSONAL experiences to write about, which keeps the reader feeling as though they are NOT alone in this world. There are other people that do not have a “perfect” life.Everyone is so worried about what other will think that they have forgotten TRUTH is what matters, not perfection! NO ONE, except JESUS, is/can be/or will be perfect during our walk of life.Lysa has the strength to write about things that hurt her and how she was able to turn TO God, instead of away from, in order to heal.Thank you, Lysa, for your courage, honesty, and FAITH that putting truth in your books will help others find Christ and feel renewed in Christ.
