I hope they paid Bill well for the use of his name. That's about all of Bill Bryson you'll find in this collection. Each essay begins with a very short paragraph, in capitals, but if he wrote it there is neither the Bryson style nor any real substance. He supposedly "edited" the book. Well, if he did, he's a much better writer than editor. The book is a collection of essays, each having something to do with the Royal Society. Some of them are pretty well done - Petroski and Davies for example. Others are - to choose a word - turgid. I have skipped to the next essay more than half the time,If you are really interested in some interesting sidelights on the early days of the Royal Society, by all means read this book. If you are only looking at it because you are a Brysophile - a lover of Bryson's writing, as I am - you will be disappointed.

Not at all what I was expecting. First of all, Bryson didn't write it - it's a collection of essays by the members, and what I read is heavy on the metaphysical side. After about 20%, I threw up my hands and deleted it. Not that I couldn't comprehend it - I have two degrees in mathematics - but I wanted something more on the order of "One Summer", or "At Home." This was far too dry and boring, not to mention obscure.

I love Bill Bryson, have read most of his books and am actively trying to finish reading his others. So, I eagerly downloaded Seeing Further as soon as it came out eagerly anticipating Bryson's wit and writing style....and was disappointed quickly. The intro is by Bryson, but not anything particularly witty. But, I'd purchased the book, I like sciency stuff and was interested in learning more about the Royal Society, so I persevered. And, ultimately, I'm glad I did. It's a nice updated on the current state of science in the world. There are discussions of String Theory as well as updates on evolution concepts. There are interesting discussions of dead scientists as well as living ones. All the various vignettes are written by scientists and/or science writers, therefore the quality of the various stories vary depending upon whether the writer is more writer or more scientist. All in all it's a worthwhile science book. But it isn't a Bryson book by any means.

I wrongly assumed that a book edited by Mr. Bryson might be as good as one written by him. All his books (I think I've read them all) have been wonderfully written, engaging, informative, structured, and, best of all, witty. This book, aside from Mr. Bryson's introduction, lacks all of that.In fact, one entire chapter drones on without a single mention, not one, of the topic of the book: The Royal Society.I suppose one should fault editor Mr. Bryson for that. But, being an Iowa native like him, and having been a newspaper editor myself for nearly 30 years, I can't bring myself to blame him.His stable of writers is a talented and literate lot, many of whom have been published in scholarly journals. But I am not coming away with a feeling for the soul of the Royal Society.Newspaper editors used to admonish their young reporters: "Show me, don't tell me." This book, though, does lots of telling; too much pontificating. There's still a story to be told of the Royal Society but I'll have to find it somewhere else.

The Amazon listing says "Bill Bryson, Author." Mr. Bryson is the editor, not the author. He only wrote 17 pages of the book. Had I looked closer at the cover, I'd've seen that, but I relied on the way Amazon listed it.

This book was not written by Bryson but he edited a group of essays from members of the Royal Society. I liked it as I am a lifelong student of science. It ends with some essays about evaluating complex issues such as global warming in an interesting way. This is not Bryson’s usual humor. It is a serious book about science history and current scientific judgement.

As a scientist I seldom read commentary about the world changing effects of the work of those in other scientific disciplines. This book integrates the points of view of many top scientists. It shows not only the importance of their scientific work but also how vital their voices are in sustaining an informed public dialogue concerning science and technology related issues.

It's not a Bryson book - he is only the editor. It is nicely illustrated with historical documents and portraits. In contrast to the title of Seeing Further the contributors are looking backwards in time in their essays. Perhaps because the contributors are established in their field their essays lack the enthusiasm and excitement of discovery that could have been better conveyed by a biographer or a historian doing original research - like Bryson does in his books.
