They say the mark of a great teacher is to be able to distill a complex subject into simple truths. This book accomplishes to delineate the things we love in storytelling in a concise way. A great feat and a terrific achievement. I love this book. It is the best book I've read on pitching my story.
Loved his other books - but this book was kind of primitive and outdated, and anything in between with no good examples in of pitches in all major genres.
I read this book specifically because I had to a story pitch. I didn't just get it out general interest. I used all the methods outlined in this book to design my pitch, practice my pitch and deliver my pitch. The pitch went really well. Not only did I use the elements of story pitch with my script, but I used it with my business to pitch my products/services to clients.It's a short little guide. I read it in one sitting. I didn't have to read it from beginnging to end. I jumped around. I eventually read the whole book, but it's a nice guide that you can pick up and choose what will work for you.You can read the table of contents to know what's in it, but here are the areas that worked best for me. The 10 questions you should answer before starting your pitch was helpful because it helped sum up the whole story and get to the points that would grab at the soul of the listener. Those questions really help connect your story. Hauge also has templates for different genres that you can use as a guide. These were really helpful. I didn't use them word for word, but it was nice to be guided from beginning to end of the pitch. I was much more confident in my pitch and knowing what I was going to say really allowed the nerves to settle and the passion to come through. I have to recommend this book 100% for any type of pitching.The kindle edition has some funky things going on with the print. Some letters are cut off and words are pushed together. This didn't make it difficult to read and it does not happen enough, but be aware of that issue.
If you want to get to the core of pitching and what it takes to create a pitch, then this the book for you! I had no idea, or experience of what a pitch should have consisted of until I read this book. If you have a pitch fest you're going to attend or pitch meeting you're going to, do yourself a favor and get this book A.S.A.P!!I can guarantee that after you read this book, you will become enlightened and empowered with new tools to help sell your screenplay. In reality if you are trying to make it, then you have nothing to lose by buying this book.Ask yourself, "Isn't it worth the risk? What do i have to lose?" trust me, get the book. I am an aspiring screenwriter and this book is a must, and if you haven't already get his other book, "Writing Screenplays That Sell." that book is genius and I love it. I read it every time I write any new spec.
Outstanding book if you're interested in selling a screenplay!!! I read it cover to cover and recommend it highly. Half the battle of selling a script is getting someone to read it, and the advice in SELLING YOUR STORY can really help. I bought a couple other books on the same subject, but I recommend this one.
I was confused about the difference between a logline and an elevator pitch. I "think" I understand now. Also a lot of good information in this book.
I just finished reading this book and wrote my 1st pitch. I'll be attending a writer's conference in the fall and wanted some information on how to present the book I've been writing for 2 years. Michael Hauge's writing style is simple and concise. While reading this, I felt like he was sitting next to me and coaching me. He writes the way someone speaks, full of examples and stories that make the topic even more interesting. His writing flows like conversation. Let's face it, we all want to be published and in this world it's harder than ever. Take every opportunity you can find to make sure you make it into print or on the screen. This book is a good 1st step.I checked Michael's website and he offers a lot of services for scriptwriters and other types of writing. If you're writing a book, he can help with that too. I'd like to hire him as a writing coach but the $1,500 price tag is out of my league. If you can afford it, I'd recommend your contacting him. I used the template he wrote in the book to design my pitch. I have a critique group which helps me to hone my wriitng even more.Buy this book. You'll be amazed at how much you'll learn, not just about writing but about the publishing industry as well. Well written, in a conversational tone. Lots of... "Of course!" and "That makes perfect sense!" moments. I believe good pitching come natural to some who are gifted, but it isn't quite as easy for most. This book can help those people (like me) to bring their pitch up a few notches. It also takes some of the scary and uncertainty regarding your approach, out of the equation. I highly recommend this book.
