Excellent book to refresh yourself on the basic math concepts that you knew before, but lost over time. The progressive nature of the book is extremely useful in terms of building upon knowledge that you've just learned and applying it to the next concept in the book. This book is excellent for individuals wanting prep for military entrance exams and is the primary reason I bought this book. If you'll be taking the AFOQT or ASTB-E, then this book is an excellent supplement to your study gouge. The practice tests at the end of each lesson really reinforces the material you just learned and the end of chapter practice tests are great to lock in all the knowledge you just went through and solidity that knowledge to long term memory.

I must say this book is much more thorough than the Kaplan math review. My one complaint is that the thickness and layout of the book is a bit overwhelming at times and makes it that much more difficult to tackle the coursework. The Kaplan book is more user-friendly and makes it much easier to get through the work. If you don't have a lot of time do the Kaplan book because it's easier to get through the information faster because the layout is more compact. BUT this book is a bit more thorough so if you can ignore the thickness of the book because of super wide margins and such (great for good scratch work but makes it seem more overwhelming than it really is).

It is a good math review book but not sufficient in itself for getting ready for the GMAT or GRE. The problem explanations are very good. I recommend it if you are weak in math and need to brush up. Barron's prep courses for the GMAT/GRE are better but if you are weak in math, this book is a better place to start before moving on to other prep courses such as Barron's.

Used this book to study for the ASTB-E. Probably the best math book I've ever owned. The word problem section was the major reason for my success. Definitely recommend.

The book is in bad shape. Lots of writing has been done on the book that I highly disapprove of. I got a bad deal. The seller should have used it more sensibly if he/she wanted to re-sell it. The book might have been written very well but I should have got a better value for my money.

Great prep book for a very difficult test.

I am working on studying and taking my GMAT exam and I always struggled with math. I found a lot of this was due to the fact that incompetent individuals taught and ONLY showed you the text book examples which only managed to show the EASIEST question. For example what do you do with polynomials with inverse exponents if you (like me) don't generally toil with text book math in my spare time. Hmm...first section is good...hmm...now what? This has ALWAYS bugged me and frustrated me as math is a system and a language. Master the system and learn the pattern and it's all pretty routine.I learned with this book though that it is the material and how it is presented. The author is very helpful and everything is broken down so you can observe multiple problems and then practice them. At the end of each section you can practice what you learned to ensure that you have the hang of it. The lessons make sense, steps are generally not skipped. While I can't say that the information therein will allow me to break the 700 mark (hey i'm too practical...can't justify the 45k for the top tier schools requiring these scores...it's JUST school...) I have little doubt that it will provide a sound basis so that there will be NO surprises on exam day.I've looked at a lot of different prep resources and most of them I find are lacking. X=34 and there is like no explanation nor any tips with how you got that. With the 4th purchase of GMAT study guide books...still go back to this one.I'm working with the GMAT prep software, this text, and McGraw Hill's GMAT study book (stay away from the GMAT Baron's study guide!!!!)...and between the three resources...should be good to go.In conclusion, after spending a few hours researching texts out there and about 20 hours working through it question by question, I have no reservations in recommending this book to those that have any questions/concerns or desire to ensure your math is bulletproof on the GMAT. It teaches you from the basics (most math is based on simple algebra and arithmetic and if you have picked up bad habits over the years.....likely have your work cut out for you)...to the established person. My two cents...may pawn it off to relatives to help with their math in college/university/HS when I am done as it makes more sense than most HS texts.

This story of Sam is like many other boys and girls out there that are born and live with this disorder. It is not easy to be a friend, a sister, a brother, or any other relation to a child with Asperger's. These children are misunderstood all throughout school and college and they continue to struggle through adulthood with a disorder they have very little control over. They fear interactions with others, large crowds create anxiety and they struggle just to say "hello" to someone new. This was a delightful story of patience, kindness, and courage in the face of adversity but an achievement in illustration. I loved it not only for it's harrowing tale but the magnificent paintings that I love so well.

I had to get a book for my Inclusion class in college and this book is wonderful! Such a good book for young children to hear!

It is really unfortunate when people write negative reviews about excellent books. This book has won many awards, was shortlisted for book of the year by Speech Pathology Australia and has been endorsed by both Dr Temple Grandin and Dr Tony Attwood. I am a therapist who works with kids with ASD and this story is very realistic and applies to many of the children on my caseload. Unfortunately children with ASD or Aspergers do wander off, recently a child with ASD in a neighborhood close to us wandered off and was killed on the road as he was standing in the middle of the road with reduced awareness of danger. All kids with special needs are individuals and this book may not apply to everyone. What I love about the book is that is points out that even though Sam is different, he has amazing talents and strengths. Most importantly this book is a wonderful advocate for kids with Aspergers or ASD and raises awareness and understanding.

I thought that this book was really good. My son is just about 10 and he also enjoyed the book. I wish I had found it much earlier... would've helped him understand his diagnosis much better. I recommend this book if you have a young child with Asperger's. I think it would also come in handy for teachers that may have students in the classroom who have Asperger's.

Great book to read to kids to help them understand differences.

Bought this book for my 6 year old son to help him understand he's not the only child in the world with Asperger's Syndrome. My son did not enjoy the story. He did not like the part of the story where Sam wonders off in the middle of the night--that scared him tremendously. Also, the things Sam does and feels in the story do not resemble my son at all. My child did not want to read this book again.Personally, I thought the book was just okay. I enjoyed the illustrations, but was disappointed that the story was nothing like my Aspie kid. With that being said, I do understand not every Aspie child is the same. If you are a parent with an Aspie child that wonders off in the middle of the night or is musically gifted then I think this book would be right for you.

Clearly told, with great reflection, regarding the author's discovery that his dad wasn't his biological father. Quite moving. The story deals with the struggle the author had following the surprise revelation following a DNA test, and how he goes about learning about his newly discovered bio father, all while attempting to be considerate of his 95 year old mother's feelings. A wonderful "human" story. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

As an adoptee who reunited on my maternal side 33 years ago and still seeking my paternal side, I was constantly frustrated with the author. I understand he was stunned, disappointed, grieving and considerate of other peoples feelings. However, I found it exasperating that he didn't actually look at the genetic information right in front on him. He gave a distant cousin a flippant response instead of realizing that a real live person can provide so much more information than geneology records, pictures and locations of relatives. He imagines what a Father's day would be like if he actually got to spend it with his biofather. However, he has an opportunity to communicate, make a connection and possibly a relationship with his siblings and other paternal relatives but he cops out instead. It seemed like a codependent response and doesn't even give anyone else the opportunity to make a choice for themself. Furthermore he is concerned about his Mother's feelings and reputation but writes this book which reveals her "secret" to the world! He never even asks her if it was an ongoing relationship or affair or even if it was consensual! Sorry Mr. Griffeth, you are just at the tip of the iceberg imho of knowing where you came from and who you are! Do more than use your imagination! Take a leap of faith and find out what your paternal family is really all about! Furthermore, you mention how much you enjoy your relationship with your cousin, Doug, who was relinquished and reunited! You are NOT even giving anyone in your paternal family the opportunity to have this with you!

I started reading this wonderful memoir and had to put my life on hold until I reached the end. As an avid genealogist myself I love the way the various strands of the family story are woven together. I wept with empathy and laughed at the twists and turns. Highly recommended!

I could not put this book down. I felt the turmoil and pain, the love and compassion, and ultimately, the acceptance that while one truly never knows what curve balls life will casually toss your way.... that there are treasures to be found, if you choose to look. I was extremely moved by your journey, Bill. You've done your family...all of them...proud.

As a genealogist I found this book fascinating .Good for him to pursue the question. As a nurse I helped with the conception of many children through the use of donor sperm. I wonder how many of their parents fear that DNA will unveil their family secret if they made it so.Thanks to Ancestry an 87 year old cousin who recently found out her aunt was really her mother found me, and was able to fill in family history on the father she never knew..

Well written and engaging tale that was unnecessarily lengthened to fill the pages of a book. I was compelled to buy this book after reading a teaser article in the magazine "American Ancestors". Actually, the whole story could have been told in a few more pages in the same article and it would have probably been better. Although I am an avid genealogist I found myself skipping through the unrelated chapters on his Griffeth family history because I just wanted to get to the rest of the story. This book is NOT a waste of time. It is a riveting story, well told ... but in too many words over too many pages.Despite this... it is a very quick read and I would recommend it to anyone who is genealogically inclined.

This is a nice and informative book. It's filled with great pictures and easy to understand information. I would definitely consider the emotional age of your child before getting this book. My child has gifted intelligence and can have difficulties processing world events/natural disasters in a broader sense, although he understands the material completely. We sort of glossed over the sections about death due to this. Older children should be fine in that regard but I would look elsewhere if you have a younger child that thinks volcanos are cool and are looking for a book about them.

I purchased this book as a reference for learning what people experience before and after an earthquake. In particular, I was interested in the eruption at Pompeii.The photos and brief explanations are good. It is not a "dumbed down" version, and I think it will interest children as well as adults.

Gives even the non-readers something to look at, think about, and ask questions. Bought this, and other DK Eyewitness books for my preschool grandsons, and they love it.

I love this book! Very educational and the pictures are fantastic!
