Wilhelmina Radcliff once had all of New York society at her feet, her future glittering with promise. But when her father's unscrupulous business partner lost the family fortune, Wilhelmina went from social darling to wallflower, forced to seek employment as a social secretary to help keep her family afloat. When Edgar Wanamaker, once her closest friend -- and her first proposal of marriage -- appears at a ball where she is employed by the hostess, Wilhelmina is mortified. With the assistance of a few fellow wallflowers she attempts to avoid the utter humiliation of facing the one who got away. But when Edgar convinces her to give him a few moments of her time, for the sake of their once close friendship, a spark of hope rekindles in Wilhelmina's heart. Could it be that an outcast wallflower didn't miss her first, best chance at love after all?At Your Request marks another reading first for me this year, as it is my first foray into Jen Turano's fiction. As the set up to her new Apart From the Crowd series, Wilhelmina and company's stories promise to be a clean read alternative for those who might otherwise enjoy mainstream historical romance authors such as Lisa Kleypas or Julia Quinn. I loved how Turano set up the premise of the series, as the wallflowers break social barriers and bond over their shared social ostracization. I'm also a sucker for second chance romances, and while the brief length of this novella limits reader engagement in Wilhelmina and Edgar's story, even from this brief sample it is abundantly clear that Turano is capable of telling a charming tale with warmth and humor. Those looking for historicals with historical depth will not find that here, for At Your Request is essentially a Hallmark romantic comedy with rudimentary historical trappings for color. The dialogue lacks spark or the flavor of historical authenticity, overly formal and often clunky. That said, I believe Turano fills a unique niche within the historical fiction market, bringing humor and a contemporary sensibility to her writing that possesses great potential, leaving me curious to sample Turano's full-length fiction. The first book in the Apart From the Crowd series, Behind the Scenes, releases in April, and follows the budding romance introduced here between Wilhelmina's fellow wallflower, Permilia Griswold, and department store owner Asher Rutherford. I really enjoyed Permilia's character, and her spark-filled introduction to Asher reminded me of Mr. Selfridge -- so I am already invested in their story. At Your Request was the perfect introduction (at long last!) to Turano's lite historical romantic comedies. While not without issues, I enjoyed this sample and am curious to see how Turano's humor and heart translate to a full-length work.

I like Turano's historical romance novels because the humor comes from funny situations rather than laughing at the stupidity of the characters. This short story was a fail for me in that regard: Wilhelmina is an adult, not-slim woman. Yet she tries to hide under a chair at a dance and gets stuck. I couldn't imagine why any sane woman would think this would work and promptly lost all respect for her. Then the hero--while promising he'd never put the heroine in a compromising position--promptly puts her in a compromising position. So he also promptly lost my respect. The story did get better after that, back to what I'd expect from Turano. The hero did some very nice things for the heroine. Also, this story made me very interested in reading Miss Permilia Griswold's story. There was no sex or bad language. I wouldn't recommend this as your first Jen Turano read, but I'd still recommend it to her fans as it introduces the characters in the "Apart from the Crowd" series.

Jen Turano is one of my favorite authors, she writes books with humor that keeps her readers entertained! At Your Request is the prequel to Turano's new series Apart From the Crowd. This book introduced us to Wilhelmina and .EdgarWilhelmina Radcliff is a feisty woman and the beautiful cover model definitely shows this character well! She's regulated to the wallflower section because her father lost his fortune.Edgar Wannamaker returns to New York after being away for seven year. He is Wilhelmina dearest friend but more. He returns for one thing. Wilhelmina. Both of discover they love each other.Edgar investigates Wilhelmina's loss of family fortune. What he discovers could change everything! This story made me laugh so hard. Jen is an expert at weaving her stories so you have humor, truth, love, and a lessen all weaved together! Beautifully done! I cannot wait for Behind the Scenes!

I have read the other short story “Gentleman of her Dreams” by this author before and quite enjoyed it, and since this was another free short story I had to read this one as well. This is a nice lead in for a new series, I liked the characters and how they found each other again. It's just a very sweet and clean romance story. The last third or so is a sample from “Behind the Scenes” the first new book in this series coming out in April, and that does look like a really good read so I'm definitely going to be reading that when it comes out. Overall this is a great story, worth the read if you're looking for a shorter historical romance, and I'm looking forward to reading more of this authors books in the future.

I read this back in the 70's and loved it. It is deep, thoughtful, and interesting. I bought this copy and have now hypnotized my grandchildren to do chores, go to bed on time, trim my toe nails, and avoid any old men who look creepy and wear red capes. Seriously though, we don't realize the power of fairy tales or metaphor. I actually recommend it to all parents. It helps to create your own bed time stories, and to understand our time-tested favorites.

I met this famous man and have always respected his idea about the fairy tale figures and their deeper meaning in the minds of children. I'll never look at fairy tales quite the same way anymore. But don't tell your children what Bruno said was the meaning of the story. Let their imaginations go to work and take them where they need it to go.

This is an important book for the healthy psychological development of children (and adults, too). It offers insight into the lasting value of these old tales, which were created and have been passed along for reasons far beyond, and infinitely more enriching, than merely entertainment. Even having been a fan of fairy tales and myths as vehicles for growth and transformation for years, I learned much through reading this thoughtful book.

It is well known that storytelling is an innate expression of civilization, in an effort to define who we are and to make sense of the world. The fairy tale is an important part of this tradition that has a long and rich history spanning thousands of years.First published in 1975, Bruno Bettleheim, one of Sigmund Freud's followers and an important contributor to psychoanalysis, has written an incredible book, suggesting that the fairy tale has a pedagogical use, educating the child about the struggles in life, that these struggles are an intrinsic aspect of existence. Following Plato, he believes that the literary education of children should begin with the telling of myths. In other words, the fairy tale can present models for behaviour, providing meaning and value to our lives. This wonderful book expresses this view extremely well and also provides a frame of reference towards the child's overall psychological development.I have read Freud for some years, and nowhere, including Freud himself, have I read a more succinctly expressed view on the ultimate purpose of psychoanalysis, than in this book by Dr. Bettleheim, he writes,"Psychoanalysis was created to enable man to accept the problematic nature of life without being defeated by it, or giving in to escapism. Freud's prescription is that only by struggling courageously against what seems like unwieldy odds can man succeed in wringing meaning out of existence." (P.8)Fairy tales inform us about life's struggles, hardships and the reality of death. From Bettleheim's point of view, the fairy tale is a "manifold form" that communicates to the child, educates them, against life's vagaries and realities, which are the unavoidable aspects of our existence. More specifically, the fairy tale is an educational tool to help children grow and develop into adults. He goes on to say that the child needs to be given "...suggestions in symbolic form about how he may deal with these issues and grow safely into maturity." (P.9)Bettleheim adeptly sets out to prove his theses by analysing well known fairy tales in the context of psychoanalytic theory, persuasively arguing the value of these tales towards the child's psychological development. If you are interested in psychoanalysis and would like to know more about the profound positive effects the telling of fairy tales can have on our young, this incredible book is indispensable.

I had to purchase this book for an English composition class and I was surprised to find that I actually enjoyed reading this book. It was fun to read the analysis of many famous fairy tale stories.

I bought this for my daughter in law as she expressed an interest when I told her about it. This book is a classic on the meaning of fairy tales in the psychological development of the personality starting with very young children.

Myths, Legends, Folklore, and Fairy Tales comprise the historical frame of reference for all our organized beliefs, theories, and speculations about the nature of man and our place in the cosmos. Bruno Bettelheim, with his thorough academic background and his ability to organize and explain the material, gives us a key piece of the puzzle which has fascinated scholars, theologians, philosophers, poets, writers, and story tellers since the beginnings of our civilization. His orientation is psychoanalytic, which at first glance might seem pedantic and overly specialized. It should not. The discipline itself is based in Ancient Greek literature which deals with the many wanderings of the human soul. Making sense of those wanderings, together with the admonition, "Know thyself," is the aim of psychoanalysis. It is also the aim of those early repositories of wisdom who first spun the yarns we have come to know as Fairy Tales. These stories have meaning which is specifically designed to guide us down the paths of our lives with courage, wisdom, compassion, heroism, and a sense of the eternal hope of success. Bettelheim does a remarkable job in driving these points home. For the lover of knowledge and wisdom, The Uses of Enchantment: The Meaning and Importance of Fairy Tales is a valuable tool, to put it mildly.

Wow. Often disturbing but so insightful into the hidden possibilities of the meanings of original fairy tales. I found a lot of inspiration in this book to use with my classes. I would highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys learning about another perspective of some of the most famous stories ever told.

I bought Anne Vipond's "Mediterranean By Cruise Ship" (6th ed.) and Rick Steve's "Mediterranean Cruise Ports" (3rd ed.) in anticipation of my first Mediterranean cruise this coming May. I'm posting the same review on each book's page to compare them, as they present two quite different approaches to preparing for your cruise. At the outset, I emphasize that each book has its merits and shortcomings and I found value in each for different reasons. First I'll give a brief overview of each book, followed by a comparison of the two on some key issues.Overview of Anne Vipond's 6th edition of "Mediterranean by Cruise Ship" (AV):I found AV to be very informative and it was very helpful to actually see some of the attractions and sites on this cruise in brilliant color. It is styled as a "DK Eyewitness" type of book, with rich illustrations, quick facts, and color maps of the major sights and locations. If you're looking for specific details about museums, restaurants, and hotels, this isn't the book for you; in fact, the "DK Eyewitness" series offers more detailed recommendations and information than this book does. But there isn't a "DK Eyewitness Mediterranean Cruise Port" book, so you'd have to buy a separate book for each port to get the same general coverage and attractive glossy color photo layout. This is also a good book for a quick introduction to the Mediterranean region, although in this day and age I can't see how this is an improvement over a thorough Internet search. This introduction is necessarily abbreviated too, as 5,000 years of history have been compressed into fewer than 40 pages. One feature I like is that the port coverage is quite broad and included some (albeit very brief) coverage of some locations not addressed in RS (Tunisia, Sicily, Corsica). The detachable map at the back is large and attractive, with the Mediterranean as a whole on the front and port-specific route maps on the back.AV's Table of Contents (and starting page numbers)Forward page by authorPart One: General Information:- Choosing your cruise (starting page 10), including chapters on: Shore Excursions; Land Tours- Preparing for your cruise (20)- Life aboard a cruise ship (26)- Natural phenomena (38)- History of the Mediterranean (42), including chapters on: Ancient Mariners; Ancient Egypt; Ancient Greece; The Roman Empire; The Renaissance; The Grand Tour; Modern Mediterranean- Art & Architecture (80)- Mediterranean Gardens (103)Part TwoPortugal (starting page 106)Spain (includes Gibraltar) (116)The South of France (148)Northern Italy (176)Southern Italy (212)Croatia (and Montenegro) (246)Mainland Greece (256)The Greek Isles (276)Turkey, The Black Sea, & Cyprus (302)Egypt & The Holy Land (336)Malta, Tunisia, & Morocco (348)Glossary of Cruise Lines (365)Index (365)Color pull out map (with walking maps on the reverse side) (369)------------------------Overview of Rick Steve's 3rd edition of "Mediterranean Cruise Ports" (RS)The word "tome" was invented to describe books such as this. It is almost 1,300 pages of small typeface printing, illustrated with black and white photos and maps. It is hefty and thick, difficult to lug around on shore excursions even if you take it apart (depending on the port, you still could be bringing over 200 pages with you!). But the reason for this bulk lies in the attention to detail, especially in providing practical advice about the places you really want to see. It is one thing to know the history of Rome, for example, but it is another to walk it with a detailed guide. This book brings you intimately into a neighborhood, along a street, at a palazzo, and even inside buildings. It provides recommendations for tours, shore excursions, independent travel, and lots of money saving public transportation options. This is the book to get if you want the ultimate do it yourself tour guide.Important Buyer's Note: Each of the chapters is actually a book in its own right; for example, the chapter on Rome is almost identical to Rick Steve's book on Rome but has fewer sights (e.g., Borghesse Gallery; National Museum). Don't buy both unless you will be in Rome longer than a shore excursion; in that case, you may want the specific book instead/as well. Also, don't do what I did and buy those $1.99 Kindle books on specific sites in Rome (e.g., the Pantheon); waste of money, since they are also included in this book.Where this book is not as helpful is in its breadth of coverage concerning the number of ports visited. Given the level of detail provided for the major ports, you might forgive that there aren't another 200 pages to cover ports in Corsica or Tunisia, for example. However, one glaring major omission from the Italy section is Sicily; I thought there should have been some information on this island, given its historical and archeological significance.RS's Table of Contents (and starting page numbers)Color maps across two pages each (Europe; Barcelona; Florence; Rome; Venice; Dubrovnik; Athens; Istanbul's Old Town)Introduction (starting page 1)Part I: Choosing and Booking a Cruise (11)Part II: Travel Skills (45), including: Before Your Cruise; On the Ship; In Port;Part III: Mediterranean Cruise Ports (143)Spain: Barcelona (149)France:- Provence (243); specific chapters include: Port of Marseilles; Port of Toulon; Marseille; Cassis; Aix-en-Provence- The French Riviera (297); specific chapters include: Nice; Villefranche-sur-Mer; Monaco; Cannes; Antibes; More Sights on the French RivieraItaly:- Florence, Pisa, Lucca, and the Port of Livorno (375)- Rome and the Port of Civitavecchia (489)- Naples, Sorrento, and Capri (615): in addition, includes chapters on Pompeii; Herculaneum; Almafi Coast- Venice (705)Croatia:- Split (803)- Dubrovnik (837)Greece: Athens and the Port of Piraeus (885); Mykonos (979); Santorini (1005) and includes Fira, Oia, and More Sights on SantoriniMore Ports in Greece (1029); includes Corfu; Olympia and the Port of Katakolo; Crete and the Port of Heraklion; RhodesTurkey: Istanbul (1085); Ephesus and the Port of Kusadasi (1205); in addition, includes chapters on House of the Virgin Mary; SelcukAppendix: Tourist Information (1241); Telephoning (1242); Transportation (1243); Resources (1248); Holidays and Festivals (1250); Conversions and Climate (1251)Index (1254)Map Index (1273)------------------------Comparing the two books:AV and RS are significantly different in format and content, but they complement each other. AV is beautifully illustrated, but lacks the detail on touring, events, location of specific sites, etc. that RS offers. Almost a third of this book's 350 pages (104 pages) concern the history and geography of the Mediterranean region; the introductory section in RS is similarly long (140 pages) BUT it accounts for only 11% of the total 1,250 pages of content! Comparing the actual cruise port sections, AV has 251 pages devoted to all of the cruise ports and sites, whereas RS devotes 427 pages to Italy alone; AV's section on Italy is only 69 pages. The content of the cruise port sections is very different too. RS provides a richer and more in depth coverage of the actual things you want to see; AV provides a sweeping overview of the lay of the land, highlighting the attractions. For example, consider how each book handles the most famous major attraction in Florence: The Uffizi Gallery. AV uses only one paragraph (fewer than 100 words) to describe the entire site, whereas RS devotes 21 pages to it, and provides a room by room tour map. That's the level of detail you can find in the RS book for all major sites at these ports of call.Interestingly, although RS has over three times the number of content pages as AV, they both weight about 1.5 pounds! That's because AV uses heavier glossy paper to accommodate the rich illustrations. Neither book will be easy to lug around the ports and sites; Rick Steves actually encourages you to break his book apart and just take just the relevant sections along with you on your excursions. In short, buy the AV book for its greater breadth of coverage, a good introduction to the history, etc. of the area, beautiful photos and maps, and as a conversation piece for that after cruise discussions with friends. Buy the RS book to take along with you, and use its detailed descriptions to appreciate your visits, from debarkation, through touring, to embarkation.

Upon booking our Mediterranean cruise, I hopped onto cruisecritic.com and signed up for the roll call, which already had over 300 posts. The organizer of the roll call always mentioned this book to anyone looking for information on the various ports, so I checked out the 2014 edition from our local library. Found the book to be exactly what I wanted, so I ordered the 2016 edition to take with me on the cruise.

I am a huge fan of Rick Steves' books. My husband and I enjoy cruising and will try to arrive a few days before we leave in order to explore the town of embarkation on our own. We've used Rick's books for independent touring of London, Barcelona, Rome and Naples and found them to be perfect for our needs. This year we had a 14 day Mediterranean cruise planned for October - I bought this book and it was just what we needed to plan port days on our own in several of the cities we visited. Previously we almost always took a shore excursion. While pricey, we've lucked out with very good tour guides. However we also wanted to go out on our own - to do that backdoor traveling Rick encourages. With Rick's new book we toured Venice (his vaporetto tour of the Grand Canal is excellent), Corfu, Mykonos, Split and Dubrovnik on our own - and we enjoyed every moment! Even if this book results in you buying one less shore excursion, it will have paid for itself. The book is terrific - only one of our ports was not covered (Messina Sicily) but we had already planned on taking one of the ship's shore excursions for that port. Buy this book without hesitation - his recommendations are spot on too when it comes to restaurants, best gelato in town, locations of public WC's, and my particular favorite - his walking tours.

In short this book paid for itself over and over again. The practical advice about transportation on land, how to best capitalize a short time in each city, restaurant tips, how to beat tourist lines, and mini guides about key places made this a great starting point for planning our time in each city and a great resource along the way. I can’t tell you how many times on our trip that my wife or I said “Well, Rick says…”Using this book alongside Rick Steves’ free audio guides (there’s an app for that, seriously, and they’re great), we had the information needed for a great trip. Even though it’s a 1200+ page tome, we threw it in our backpack most days or took quick notes or pictures on simpler days like in Mykonos. After chapters on general cruising advice, how to choose a cruise, etc., the book is laid out by country, and then each “chapter” focuses on a different cruise port. Each chapter lists out top sights, transportation from the boat, some guides for top attractions, recommendations for food, and potentially provides recommended contacts if you want to do hire a tour guide or do a group excursion. There’s even a bit at the end of each chapter about what to do if you miss your boat, but fortunately we never had to follow his advice there! We took a 12-night Norwegian cruise from Venice to Barcelona, so we used the following chapters: Barcelona, Provence (Toulon), Florence (Livorno), Rome (Civitavecchia), Naples, Venice, Athens (Piraeus), Mykonos, Istanbul, and Ephesus (Kusadasi). When you’re only hitting each city for a few hours (how do you see Rome in a day?) this book was invaluable in helping us create a realistic plan.A few highlights from the book:Clear directions on how to take public transportation – often as simple as something like ‘when you leave the cruise terminal, take a left and follow the road to the church ahead. When you reach it, take a right and you’ll see the bus stop just ahead.’ Even though we’d never been to any of the cities before, we always felt prepared as we made our way off the boat.Honest advice about when doing an excursion or hiring a guide might be a good choice - We saved a fortune by exploring Venice, Athens, Mykonos, Istanbul, Ephesus, Pisa, and Barcelona on our own, but were very happy that we chose to take excursions/hire guides for some of the other days.Guides for museums and sites – Combining the book guides with his audio guides we felt like we had our own private tour guide in places like the Pantheon, the Coliseum, the Uffizi Gallery, the back streets of Florence, the Grand Canal, and more. In fact, we took an excursion to visit Pompeii, and were wishing our guide was as good as Rick!Time and money saving hints, tips and tricks – how to skip the line to St. Peters after visiting the Vatican Museum, when the train or bus could save money or even time over a taxi, skipping the line to the Coliseum, evaluating the Roma Pass, Firenze card, etc. I’m sure that most of this is available elsewhere, but it was great to have it all in one place.Accuracy – while some prices had changed, it was amazing how detailed the book was. You can also check his website while planning/before leaving to see any updates he’s aware from after the last publication of the book.Overall, this book was invaluable for us this summer, and for all of the CruiseCritic friends we made aboard the ship. As an aside, CruiseCritic was a great website to help us coordinate excursions and “do it yourself” days with others before the trip and to meet people once aboard. We saved money by sharing taxis and joining small excursions together (many of which were recommended in this book). In addition to the cruise, we used this book for two extra days each in Florence and Venice, and 5 days in Rome (along with his short Rome at a Glance book). It provided plenty of detail to help us plan almost all of that time. We’re now Rick Steves’ fans, and we’ll be using his books as a reference for any future European travel we do! I’d say this book is a must for anyone taking a European cruise to the ports included!

Review

“Richard is good-looking and very smart, which is sexy to start with. He also makes a billion dollars before breakfast—and still knows how to have fun."-- Ivana Trump“Few people in contemporary business are as colorful, shrewd, and irreverent, and probably no one’s nearly as much fun to be around. . . . Branson embodies America’s cherished mythology of the iconoclastic, swashbuckling entrepreneur."-- GQ“Branson wears his fame and money exceedingly well: no necktie, no chauffeur, no snooty clubs. . . . What continues to set Branson apart is the unique -- and, to some, baffling -- nature of his ambition. . . . He isn’t interested in power in the usual sense of influencing other people. . . . Boiled down to its singular essence, Richard Branson just wants to have fun.”-- Newsweek“Branson, a self-described ‘adventure capitalist,’ is a business-creation engine who was clearly born in the wrong place. . . . Those business instincts are matched by an ability to motivate people who work for him. And who wouldn’t want to -- Branson seems hell-bent on making sure that everybody, but everybody, is having as much fun as he is.”-- Time“Richard Branson . . . is dressed to the nines: in a $10,000 white silk bridal gown with a traditional veil and train and acres of lace. . . . Branson is expected to do the unexpected, even the bizarre -- anything to publicize his latest venture. . . . The fact is, Branson’s widely reported stunts seem almost staid compared to the unconventional way he manages his burgeoning empire.”-- Forbes ASAP

While interested in entrepreneurs who are selfless, smart but humble, and always seeming to see into the future, Richard Branson's name kept being thrown into the conversation. While I have heard of his exploits, I thought them exagerrated until I did some digging. What I found was only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. As I researched, I found many more factual and historical stories about the man. Then I bought this book. Not only did it give great insight into the personal details, metuculously recounted, of each adventure, but was also an impressive insight into the inner workings of the way he sees things and how he sets about planning and taking action on them. This is the kind of autobiography you hope and dream of finding. If you are a fan of the man (legend), or of entrepreneurship, or even of economics, this book, written superbly and with excitement, will be for you. If you are questioning whether or not to read it, I dare you to download a sample and try it. I'll hedge my bets you'll be drawn in as well.

"Screw it, let's do it". This is definitely the mantra portrayed in the book and all of Branson's business. It's a great lesson in risk and doing what you love. If you are doing something that you truly love doing, the risk can be less or feel like less. Virgin is such an impressive company/brand, a great lesson in diversifying and creating positive social and economic change along the way.I really like how the book was set up. Each chapter a time frame in Branson's life and what happened within those months/years. I didn't know much about Branson's life or all the many businesses that Virgin operated. I am a bigger Branson fan now.One thing I didn't like about the book, was the additional chapters. While the content was good, they seemed to just be thrown on at the end. There wasn't any structure to them. Each of the additional chapters took about 1.5 hours to read while other chapters in book ranged from 10 to 30 minutes. Would have been nice to have more structure for these additional chapters.

Sir Richard Branson's life story is, to quote Nassim Taleb, a black swan event that streaks beautifully across the landscape of modern human history like an asteroid, with daring adventures, stellar business records, and unparalleled vision for the future. He's the British version of Elon Musk except maybe even mention re successful, in that there's absolutely zero boundaries when it comes to what can be a viable business. Success of Virgin is guided by the single minded philosophy of building a better product for the customers, and Branson is a classic example of "success because he's too naive to know it's impossible". Overall a very inspiring read.

If you're you are looking for a source that will truly inspire you to pursue your dreams, this is it!! I could not put it down. Don't overlook his early pre-digital, pre-internet experiences thinking that these experiences don't apply to today's start-up. He demonstrates how, by being resourceful and persistent, and with a little well earned luck, any obstacle can be overcome while still having a lot of fun.You can hear Richard Branson's speaking style come through in nearly every line in his autobiography, as he demonstrates the building of a world class business without compromising social values.

One of the greatest autobiographies I have read from one of the most influential person in this world. I wanted to learn more about this incredible man and this book was the perfect place to start. I got to understand first-hand the mind of Sir Richard Branson and see how he began his journey to creating his business empire. The book is witty, funny, and inspirational. I couldn't put the book down! There were times where I would stay up late into the night reading this book, just to know what happened to him, or I would start laughing out loud because of a funny incident he would mention in his life.I can say without a doubt my level of respect grew immensely for this person after this book. His storytelling is on point, and you can literally imagine yourself being there when he describes the moments of his life. A man from humble beginnings. Although he has become a multi-billionaire, it is clear he has no forgotten his roots, which is conveyed in his writing. 5/5 would recommend.

Great book! I was able to find the adventurous spirit of Sir Branson in the first few pages - especially with his attempt to be the first hot air balloonist in the world. The book really got down to the minute details of what drives him and what his mindset is like when facing challenges. A definite must-read for any aspiring entrepreneur!

Just a crazy good read! Truly difficult to put down right from the get go. There's a ton of great information in this book, and it's all presented in an exciting manner, which at times had me exclaiming "No way!", "That's insane!", "Awesome!" or literally laughing out loud.Branson has to be one of the coolest, most positive entrepreneurs on the planet, and it's really great to be able to see the world from his vantage through his own person account. As I said in the title, this really is an inspirational, motivating, educational, and fun read, and I would absolutely recommend it to those who have an interest in the stories of great business leaders.

What an enjoyable read. So many things I never knew about such a great man. Thank you Sir Richard for always keeping your integrity, family and honor first in your life. Money turns so many people ugly. This is a journey about a man who has taken his power and wealth to give back to the communities. He also teaches his employees how to think outside the box, to lead and survive on their own. Most employers try to keep their staff "trained".Highly recommended book!

The Chain: Farm, Factory, and the Fate of Our Food, by Ted Genoways

Review

“A muckraker for our times, Ted Genoways goes behind the scenes in the meatpacking industry and shows us how the sausage is really made... An insightful chronicle of a changing American heartland, and of lives trampled in the headlong rush to industrialize the food system. Upton Sinclair would surely approve.” (Dan Fagin, Pulitzer-prize winning author of Toms River)“Ted Genoways has crafted an unflinching, intimate portrait of America’s industrialized meat system, centered on pork but conveying lessons that go beyond it. The Chain is a must-read for anyone concerned with our nation’s food system, and the phenomenal cost—animal, human, and environmental—of cheap meat.” (Tracie McMillan, author of The American Way of Eating)“An exhaustive examination of this industry. . . . Readers curious about meatpacking and agriculture as well as the social, economic, and environmental impacts of the food industry will find Genoways’s nonfiction debut a valuable and stimulating read.” (Library Journal (starred review))“A searing indictment . . . [Genoways] writes with passion and a sense of mission . . . He should get people thinking about the trade-offs that the public makes in return for low-cost meat.” (Associated Press)“Formidably researched and vividly told, The Chain is the definitive story of American pork. Ted Genoways intercuts intimate portraits of towns and factories with longer views of labor, business, and immigration history, making painfully clear the true cost of the ‘other white meat.’” (Ted Conover, author of The Routes of Man)“A scathing report on the consequences of factory farming….Genoways…shows that little has changed in more than 100 years….[He] tells a sad, horrifying story, a severe indictment of both corporate greed and consumer complacency.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Comparable to Sinclair’s classic expose, The Jungle, Genoways’s blistering account of the meatpacking industry makes the case for tighter monitoring of this powerful sector of American agribusiness.” (Publishers Weekly)“A disturbing exposé . . . Genoways makes a compelling case that the meatpacking industry’s relentless drive for higher output poses a threat to food safety.” (Minneapolis Star Tribune)“A scathing report on the consequences of factory farming. . . . A sad, horrifying story, a severe indictment of both corporate greed and consumer complacency.” (Kirkus Reviews)“…a worthy update to Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle and a chilling indicator of how little has changed since that 1906 muckraking classic.” (Mother Jones)

This book is, above all, an account of corporate greed and its horrific effects on society. The book focuses on Hormel Foods, the maker of Spam, from its late 19th century origins to the present day. In the 1990s, relaxed USDA inspection regulations at Hormel's pork processing plants allowed it to increase the speed of its production line (known in the plants as the "chain", which gives its name to the book). Then, the recession beginning in 2007 resulted in a greater demand for Spam, which was viewed as a cheap alternative to fresh meat. Eager to satisfy this demand and avoid losing market share, Hormel began increasing the speed of the chain to terrifying and previously unheard of speeds. The company's two pork processing plants in Austin, Minnesota and Fremont, Nebraska, came to process up to 1,300 hogs an hour. This brutal pace put immense pressure on workers and contributed to more workplace injuries in an industry in which they were already common.Through painstaking research and investigative journalism, the book describes in detail the various negative effects Hormel's aggressive business practices had on its workers, the communities in which it operates, the environment and the pork producers who supply it and the welfare of the pigs they raised. Genoways describes how the pork processing jobs changed over the last few decades from stable middle-class, unionized jobs to poorly-paid, non-union jobs mostly filled by undocumented workers. He also explores how pork farming moved from large numbers of small-scale farmers raising a few dozen hogs on traditional outdoor pasture to the gigantic corporatized farms of today, where vast sheds house thousands of hogs who live their whole lives in concrete and never see daylight.I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Similar in style to Eric Schlosser's "Fast Food Nation", "The Chain" is engagingly written and engrossing. Overall it is an indictment of the factory farming system that exists in the United States today to satisfy consumer demand for cheap meat. It is an important book for anyone interested in animal welfare, the environment and worker rights. My only criticism is that some portions were a somewhat prolix and could have used some editing to assist with ease of reading.

I have to admit I bought this book thinking it was more about the food part of the story. If that's what you're looking for I recommend looking further because the emphasis in this book is the workers (though it may convince you to never even look at a can of Spam much less eat any). The author can't seem to really decide what he wants it to be about & so he tries to write about everything - food, animals, worker's illness & injury, immigration, farming, pollution, unions, big business, laws, government. The result is choppy with some parts that are fascinating & others that I had to struggle not to just skim through. All in all it's a well written, well researched mostly interesting book but it could have been much better

The Chain does a good job of combining stories of real people with cold facts. That combination of anecdotes plus statistics is the best way to convince people to change their mind about something. I learned a lot, and I would recommend The Chain to others.I read some reviews that were unfavorable because the book did not focus enough on the suffering of animals (and presumably, the superiority of veganism). Yeah, the book isn't about that. It's about humans. It may be a book from an omnivore's perspective, but there's nothing wrong with that. This book shows that people who do eat meat should be paying more attention to the safety and regulation of their food. Even if you are a vegan, giving this book to an omnivore friend could lead them to eat less meat, or look further into the suffering of animals, even if it wasn't a main emphasis. The morality of eating meat is never brought up in The Chain, but the book is effective and important without it.

This is a great book. Having lived 20 miles from Austin in the neighboring Albert Lea and having worked in the Albert Lea Wilson's & Company meat processing plant this was quite the update on the speed and nature of production of my era forty years ago. The health issues and immigrant labor challenge and the broadening of the large producers into the production side of the hog industry and the environmental impact on regional water quality is fascinating. The bottom line is you may not eat pork, work in the processing industry or drink water in southern MN or northern IA again.

Ever wonder where all the illegal aliens are working? Well, most of the meat you eat is processed by illegal aliens from Mexico. So if you're one of those conservatives who rants about sending back illegal aliens, remember that they're people just like us who have families and work like dogs putting meat on your table. Further, if you're one of those people who can't stop romanticizing BBQ, maybe you should think about the incredible torture inflicted on animals in modern day meat warehouses. You can get by eating a lot less meat. Don't like a lecture? Tough!

Well written and so informative on many levels. I will never eat pork again and hate this country for the way it treats its food animals and they way it lets big business and corporations ruin the environment and literally get away with murder, and so much more. I feel so sorry for all the people in Minnesota and Iowa that live near these pig concentration camps. I think anyone that cares about life should read this book.

You don't want to waste time reading my review.Read the book.Remember what you've read when you buy the burger or nugget or "other white meat".Recoil at what the "mechanization of animalia" is doing (if not to the animals) to the environment.Just read the book. And all the others on the issues of food as the most critical natural resource (well next to air, maybe).

What an eye opener. I never thought a big company like Hormel was treating its animals or its employees well, but I had no idea of the risks to life and limb they were willing to take in the name of profits. Disgusting!
