I listen to a lot of audio books. I started this self kick on trying to better myself this past year. This book along with his 17 Essential Qualities of a Team Player help me to get a promotion and changed my viewpoint on my whole work life. I highly recommend it and have even recommended it to my coworkers and even my boss has read it.

When I first started this book I had recently finished The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, also by Maxwell. I thoroughly enjoyed The 21. When I started The 17 I immediately thought that this book was just a regurgitation of The 21 and that Maxwell was going to milk the series for all its worth.In looking back I still find the first few sections light and common sense. But I hung in there and I'm glad I did. There are section later that challenged my thinking and the way I lead my team.I'm personally not a fan of all the sports references and all the talking about his own organization that Maxwell does, but points are well made. Not all the how-tos and details of team is given, but most sections are great springboards or foundations to get you moving in the right direction.For example, now I feel like I know where I need to go for more resources, what questions to ask, what first steps to take to enrich my team. No, this book isn't the end-all and be-all of everything team, but it can provide a new environment in your mind for how you approach teams.So, I was enriched by this book and have recommended it to friends already. I will also reference it in the future and the notes and highlights that I wrote in it.

I always enjoy reading books by John C. Maxwell. This book was not a disappointment at all. I was asked to do a team building seminar for a church leadership weekend and found the principles within "The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork..." extremely insightful and beneficial. Everyone left with renewed strength and a determination to fork more faithfully with one another and their pastor.I highly recommend this book for leaders everywhere, but since my context is church, it is definitely a must read for pastors and ministry leaders to share and discuss with their teams.

Hawkins brings up some points of Neuro-linguistic programming, which to me are the biggest reason for the continued support of a "bad barrel". By controlling a person's language, you control their reality. Co$ is adept at this practice, which causes the motto "revenitas/revenimus" to be literally true in some cases. If you are in, READ THIS BOOK AND GET OUT. if you are interested in joining Co$, READ THIS BOOK INSTEAD (then read all the others from ex-clams; {oh no! a semi-colon!} They are all good - for a given value of good. Usually they are heart-rending accounts of personal loss, heartache, confusion and betrayal. They are "good" reads, meaning they are highly engrossing and even exciting, but not typically leave one at a high tone level. "Anger" for instance is considered "low toned". )I am not now, nor was I ever part of the Co$, or a user/supporter of it's technology. I have my own opinions about the sci fi pulp writer whose infantile understanding of buddhism, thelema, the mind, and his own psychosis led him to create the farce of $cn.By the by, most books on/about/relating to $cn typically contain a definition of $cn along with it's etymology, which is almost always incorrect. I don't care what the intent of "$ource" was when he re-appropriated the term, but I can tell you that Scio is Latin for "I know" (from Scire- to know) and Logos is Greek for "Word" or "speech". Possibly an early in-joke describing the NLP/reality tunnel aspect of $cn meaning: "know the words...."Well, if you know them, FORGET THEM. Let your new motto become "Nunqualm Iterum"

Just read this book straight through.Couldn't stop.Thanks, Jeff. A tiny gleam of light is breaking through the dark clouds and tells me there is sunshine somewhere, there is love and freedom, there is hope. Troubled clouds and high winds are not all there is to life.Anyone who has been there knows what I mean, and you probably already pressed the Buy Now button. For those who have not, or who wonder what value there can be in the words of an apostate etc. etc. I suggest reading this book. While it pulls no punches it also does not engage in name calling or sensationalism. It is practical and provides guidance. There is a calm moving spiritual sense of exploration here, not a dogmatic polemic. That is just what we need.If you are not a Scientologist or former this book is really not for you, Counterfeit Dreams: One Man's Journey Into and Out of the World of Scientology is the reference for outsiders. But there is an excellent chapter for friends and relatives of Scientologists that is really required reading for all concerned.The official Church of Scientology will denounce this book and so will the rabid anti-Scientologists. So be it. Seekers of truth and ordinary people who need real insight and practical tips to reconstruct their lives after Scientology will rejoice. A few will leave it with tears in their eyes and a prayer, as do I.Thanks, Jeff.

I read this book in less than two days, so tangled up in the story that I had to find out what happens to Mary, the girl in the group home serving time for a murder of a baby - allegedly. Jackson is a master at manipulating the reader's feelings, turning everything topsy-turvy on you when you least expect it. She rips you through all the feels, all the exclamations and leaves you shattered at the end of it all. When I reached the end, it was a huge WOW moment for me. And I'm still thinking that, WOW. This is a book that I'll be thinking about for a long time to come. Tiffany Jackson has a long career ahead of her and I can't wait to read her next book!

The books I enjoy most are the ones where I feel like I'm experiencing a new world or reality, and I felt immersed in Mary's. This book is raw, honest, realistic, and gut-wrenching, not to mention a page turner. The conversational feel of it, along with the twists and turns, meant I read this book in record time. I had to get to the ending. I'm still thinking about that ending.

Couldn't put this book down! It's twisty, shocking, dark, and fabulous. And thrilling. Highly recommend! I read Tiffany's book in two days, feeling the whole time like I couldn't walk away. The narrator is so complex. She's smart as hell, strong in so many ways, and yet completely mysterious. The book is finished, but I simply can't stop thinking about this girl. She surprises you and keeps you guessing right up to the last page.

I started reading Allegedly by Tiffany D Jackson on a whim. I was looking for a book to read in between books and was drawn to the title. When I read the premise, I knew I had to read a bit more. It became one of those books I tore through, felt it was a bit longer than needed to be, and then disliked the ending so much it almost ruined the rest of the book.Mary Addison murdered a baby when she was 9 years old, allegedly. She has moved from "baby prison" (solitary confinement) to juvie to a halfway house where she is allowed to leave under supervision. Her fellow prisoners torture her regularly, from simply throwing her stuff on the floor to much worse things later in the book. Mary has been in the prison system so long, she is numb to most of it.The worst part is everyone knows her story. Her story has been written about in a ton of books and it looks like it will be made into a movie. In a place where people assume, knowing your crime is a different story.Mary gets visited by her mother regularly on Sunday, where her mother stays for about 15 minutes to talk about her new life. Mary also works at an elderly home, where she has met Ted, an 18 year old who has gotten 16 year old Mary pregnant. Mary has also gotten a new roommate who is working through the justice system with an independent group who helps those who have received injustice get justice. The connection to that is Mary has started to remember things about that night when she allegedly murdered a baby that don't seem to add up.I'll begin my review portion by stating, this is not a light book to read. For those who have triggers, there is abuse, statutory rape, torturous conditions, and of course the murder of an infant which gets described in great detail several times. The funny thing is this is marketed as a book for teens. My guess is because the protagonist is a teen, but this is NOT a teen book, maybe a young adult, but definitely not for early teens.I am also going to go a tiny bit negative. There were three things that bothered me about this book. The first was the length. At about 400 pages, it becomes a bit too long. The second was the Ted story, as it was a bit clichéd. As soon as Ted is introduced, you know he is going to get her pregnant and you know he is going to be something else (I won't spoil, but you learn pretty quickly what that something else is). Finally, the ending. I have talked to a few people online who also disliked the ending. You journey through 390 pages or so and the last few pages simply ruin the book. I am not going to spoil, but just be prepared.Now for the positives, as there were more than negatives. Mary's story about that night unfolds wonderfully. You get glimpses here and there, but you don't get the whole story until you need to. Her relationship with her mother is well described and thought out. It would be a tense relationship between them. It is also an incredible look at the injustice found within the justice system. How can someone prove her innocence when the whole world knows her story? She was 9 when the crime happened, it is now 7 years later and she has no hope of getting justice.Overall, I sort of enjoyed this one. It was a good story, but it is brutal in places, so how could one enjoy brutality? I gave this one 3.5 stars.

Pro's: well written, absorbing, realistic dialogue, explored relationships, fast-paced, and memorable.Cons: a little lengthy, a few stereotypes, and I didn't like the ending.This story had me hooked from beginning to end. The story delves into the complexity of why a nine-year-old would murder a baby (Allegedly). Is she a psychopath? Is her mother the real murderer?The author tells us to the result of the horrible murder but leaves out enough details to where we look for insights into the truth of the crime in page after page. Was Mary responsible or her mother or both?The story begins after Mary spends six years in 'baby jail' and is out on parole in a group home filled with angry, depressed teenage girls who have their own complex problems. It's an unsafe place with poorly trained staff. Throughout the entire novel, the staff is portrayed as uncaring, inept, or both which seemed stereotypical.The author 'gets' the dialogue and attitude of the girls, the psychological relationship between a dysfunctional mother and daughter, and the systematic 'processing' of children/teens in the criminal justice system of New York. The victim's parents life is explored (after the crime) and I was glad to see this mentioned in the novel.After Mary meets eighteen-year-old Ted-a young man with problems and obstacles of his own, they begin a romantic relationship with all the fantasy of what could be if it wasn't for the woundedness they both bring.In spite of tremendous obstacles, Mary is intelligent and pursues her SAT so she can get into college. When she becomes pregnant she realizes the state will take her baby and devises a plan to get out of the group home. This prompts Mary, to tell the truth of the crime. But is it the truth?

I first read the Tao Te Ching in college. Somewhere along the line I lost that copy so I decided to pick up this one (especially since it had such high reviews). This copy seemed much different than the one I read years back. And I am not just talking about the author's choice to use female pronouns as well as male pronouns in his version (incidentally - how close can one get to awareness of Tao if one allows oneself to get hung up on seeing "He" rather than "She" in the teachings?).In one portion of this "tao de ching: A New English Version" ("Version" is the key word) the author chooses to translate "When the Tao is absent in a country,/ war horses are bred on the borders" to "When a country goes counter to the Tao, Warheads are stockpiled outside the cities". This author has written his "modernized" version of the Tao Te Ching and he claims to have been open in this fact, supposedly by him using the terms "A New English Version". When one reads further one in the notes you see the author admitting he does not even know Chinese (so his interpretation of the Tao is from other translations - and how he thinks the lines should read for poetics sake, or P.C. sake, etc).At first I thought I would not write a review on this book. But when seeing the author admit to what I had suspected it made me feel like I really got ripped off. If you are looking for a translation of the Tao Te Ching do not get this author's book. The author respects the Tao but this is not the real deal. I will be purposefully losing this book and looking for a better translation.

Steven Johnson's narrative of the 1854 cholera epidemic in London's Soho district is by turns illuminating, thought-provoking, and a little bit irritating.I don't think it's a perfect book, but I'm glad that I read it. For one thing, it sent me to the dictionary more than once*. For another, he artfully relates the cholera epidemic as a struggle of microbiology and of society. "Ghost Map" is about one kind of prokaryote (an organism composed of a cell with no nuclei, i.e., a bacterium) which needs eukaryotes (all other organisms, including humans) in which to live and multiply, and it's also about the humans who unwittingly create ideal environments for the cholera bacteria's life cycle.It's also about cities - and although I'm not sold on everything Johnson writes about the future of urbanism, he has some intriguing ideas. Because of them, I'll probably again read The Death and Life of Great American Cities - which I haven't looked at in years - with a new perspective.I would recommend "Ghost Map" not as a book with all the answers, but as one with a well-told historical tale which also poses important questions about the future of our urban life.----------*I admit that I'm using in this review some of the words I looked up - hoping that it will help me remember them.

A very good and interesting introduction to English life of the ordinary people. The aristocrat's life of ease rested on the shoulders of these people who struggled just to live. The primary reason that country people began to move to the cities was because many estates were converted to sheep farming. See the history of the so-called 'Highland clearances'.The description of the disposal of human bodies and graveyards in general makes one wonder why cremation was not widespread.Concerning Johnson's discussion of the scavengers in third world countries, in America, in the 21st Century we still have people who make their living scavenging the streets, highways and dumpsters for metal, such as aluminum cans.It's interesting that Dr. Snow and the Rev. Whitehead actually interviewed people in the cholera infected areas. The aristocracy generally had no interest in the underclasses.All in all, The Ghost Map is a document celebrating the triumph of the scientific method versus "everybody knows".Read it. You may learn something.Since this book was published in 2006, some sections are now dated.

Through the London epidemic of Cholera in 1854, the author presents the Victorian era science, public opinions and participating individuals in the pursuit of stopping the epidemic. The book is about the urbanization of society and subsequent public health challenges, and how the experience shaped the management of urban governing through science, sociology and engineering and the future ramifications of urban issues in the time of global dangers. It is one of those exemplary non fiction, history/science/technology books that are entertaining with interesting participants, and their opponents--personal, political and environmental--, but in the end the triumph against all odds, thanks to some luck, but a whole lot of tenacity and scientific and personal integrity and faith. There are many lessons, one of which is what Susan Sontag wrote about as well, the malice of attaching morality to disease--here, for example phrenology, or internal constitution as a factor, classism, or the treatment of people with AIDS during the Reagan administration in our time. I found the only problem with this book is that his Epilogue is way too long than necessary, and he repeats same issues that have been discussed already.

Independently each spent countless of hours interviewing, recording, and analyzing all collected data. The scientific mind of Dr. Snow compiled a map indicating the location and number of deaths therein. Whitehead as a trusted, respected local was key in turning the made up minds of city agencies who stubbornly clung to the idea the disease originated in the foul, smelly air to accepting the actual catalyst for the outbreak.This is really an outstanding detective story very well told. A history lesson if you will. The facts, players and uncanny elusiveness of this indiscriminate killer called cholera progressed systematically without the bog down of boring statistics. The author skillfully carries history into our modern times with glimpses into our foreseeable future. A notable writing achievement.

This would be a five star book if the last 30 pages hadn't drifted into a conversation on nuclear weapons that is only tangentially related to the book itself. Anyone who has ever taken an epidemiology class has heard of John Snow and the Broad Street Pump, but this was a much more detailed account. In the same spirit of the Microbe Hunters, Steven Johnson puts his readers in the mind of the subjects. The quotes are real the thoughts inferred, but the story comes to life in a way a more traditional biographical or timeline approach can never do. Whether you care about cholera outbreaks in Victorian London or not, this is an interesting story about two determined men, public health, and how much city life has and hasn't changed.

When she was a young girl, Lisa Caponigri regularly traveled on extended research trips to Italy with her father, an internationally known professor of Italian philosophy. Usually, in a book this size, I'll find 10-15 recipes that look interesting enough to make me want to spend the time to prepare them.THIS book, however, is filled with recipes I can't wait to try. I've already made 7, and they've all been winners.I'm single, so it's not like I'm cooking for a crowd every night. But I do enjoy entertaining, and my friends seem to enjoy being "guinea pigs" for my culinary experiments. I let 'em know when I get a new cookbook, and we plan 3-4 parties based on it.The book is organized into menus which can help with planning. But there's no law that says you can't "mix and match" recipes from multiple menus. Each menu includes an appetizer, a pasta dish, a main dish with at least one side, and a dessert. The desserts are worth noting: they're all consistently good, and most general Italian cookbooks won't give you 52 dessert recipes. A HUGE hit with my friends was the zuppa inglese -- trifle with lemon pudding and pound cake: rum-splashed layers of cake, pudding, strawberry jam, and fresh strawberries, topped with whipped cream and a bit of lemon zest. I've done the pollo alla Vesuvio (chicken vesuvio) and manzo marinato (marinated flank steak) for company with excellent results.This is a seriously good Italian cookbook, well-organized, and full of mouth-watering recipes that your family and friends will love.

One of my most used Italian cookbooks, and I have over 25 on my shelf. Italian is my favorite cuisine, and at least 2x a year I do a 5 course, all homemade full-on Italian meal for my Italian husband and his 8 siblings and spouses. It takes me weeks to determine the right menu. This is the one I happen to zone in on most often. I like the composed menus, the variety, pictures and stories. Normally I'll pull at least 10 cookbooks down and comb through them... using a spreadsheet to keep track of the options by courses. This year I used this cookbook and two others. I didn't even bother pulling others into the fray. "Whatever Happened to Sunday Dinner?" is worth EVERY. SINGLE. PENNY.One Complaint:This cookbook literally fell apart. The binding is broken and the pages are falling out. I know it sounds like I use it every day and that perhaps I'm hard on my books. Nothing could be further from the truth. These are my gems. I am fiendishly protective of my books because they're like companions to me - my friends on my culinary explorations. The fact that this beloved book has fallen apart is a bit upsetting, but it won't keep me from promoting the contents.

I grew up in an Italian household where Sunday night dinner was a big deal. As our family split up and my papa passed away, Sunday dinners sort of faded away. So, the title of this book immediately drew me in and I am glad I found it. The recipes are yummy and the photos are great too. As I read through many of the recipes, I had that old feeling of nostalgia and smiled as I thought of my childhood and my nana. The recipes yield a lot of food so unless you are feeding a small army, you may need to scale these back a bit. Wish I had more people to feed so I can use the book more, but regardless, I look forward to starting my own new Sunday traditions!

Generally a good book, but today I was looking for a recipe and noticed that my copy is bound without pages 115-130, which is where the recipe I was looking for is supposed to be found. It is not a problem of the binding or that somehow these pages fell out, instead the publisher bound it without these 16 pages. If you buy it, check to make sure that your book actually includes all of the pages. Other than that, it is a very good Italian cookbook.

Love this cookbook. My latest hot recommendation and gift to give. Have tried 8 of the recipes so far and have yet to be disappointed. The interesting stories accompanying the recipes are dear. My only regret is that I did not photograph the selections I have already made; the cookbook has limited photos. But no big deal, the tastes are great.

I really enjoy how the recipes are very simple with limited ingredients. I also really enjoy the menu format rather than separate sections of appetizers, pasta courses, mains and desserts. I find that the recipes do allow for more than one person in the kitchen, which works for me as I'm always trying to cook with my wife.Be cautioned that if you cook based on the ingredient measurements it produces a lot of food. Each menu can serve at least 8 people.

I bought this book after seeing it at my local library. It is one of the few cookbooks that I use on a weekly basis. The recipes are authentic and delicious! I get many compliments on the dishes I make from this book.

Not what I expected, probably will never use it.
