The book speaks to outsourcing in a reasonable fashion with some good suggestion, processes and methodologies however it does have some holes and some coverage areas that could use some improvement (holes - driving correct provider behavior, improvement areas - managing the deal, innovation, exit planning, etc.) and some processes that need work. Also it has some age to a few suggestions - e.g. some items in this book were being used in the 1980's. All in all an ok book.

"Vested Outsourcing" is tough to put down. Kate has nailed the age-old operational struggle of competing goals, interests, and priorities through her real-world examples. The book boils down the challenges and solutions into easy-to-understand, relatable principles & strategies that can be applied in virtually any outsourcing environment & relationship.Kate’s vision is remarkable. For example, the Golden Retriever puppies appear to be easier than the Pug Puppy. For each felted dog, there is a recipe for items needed. It lists the color of wool you will need for the body, ears and tail, as well as the colors you will need for the body. It also mentions any other supplies you might need such as glass eyes or pipe cleaners.The instructions are pretty detailed, explaining how to construct the dog, what sizes to aim for, and sometimes listing small notes which give helpful tips on how to make the felted dog look more like an actual dog.All in all, I thought this was a fantastic book for the price. It's hardcover makes it durable and easy to work with when creating a project, and it includes plenty of projects to stay busy for awhile! This book would be excellent for tweens on up to adults. This book is SO cute. I've done other needle felting projects in the past, including a three-dimensional meerkat, panda, and penguin. Let me begin by admitting that needle felting is one of my least favorite crafts. There are so many hours that go into needle felting, that most people who look at your finished craft won't even begin to realize. In fact, probably the biggest surprise of this book, for me, is how large the dogs are (larger than any needle felted critters I've made before). Larger equals more work. That being said, once you're done you'll really have something to be proud of.This book is cute even for the adorable photos of the author's creations, but I bet you're wondering more about the instructions, right? If so, they're pretty good. It's kind of hard to give instructions on how to needle felt, because it's almost like making something out of clay in that you can't give exact instructions as you can with a crocheting, knitting, or sewing project, or something similar. How the critter turns out is very dependent on the skills of the crafter.However, I do think that it could have been made easier for beginners by doing a couple of things:(1) Photos. As I made a dog, I kept wishing I could see it from lots of different angles. I ended up doing a web image search to see more about how a Westie's hair looks, for example. It would have been good to see photos not only of Yamazaki's dog creations from many angles, but also the real-life dogs they are based on. This issue is easily resolved just by going on a search engine, but it would be nice if the book contained more photos.(2) Life-sized charts. Not life-sized of real dogs! :) But of the projects. There are charts in the book, but they're not sized at 100%. I think that if they were, this would be a huge help for beginners, as they could place their felted shapes directly on the book in order to make sure they're getting the dimensions exact.I'm the type of person who thinks that if you're going to be a good needle felter, all you need are photos of what you're trying to make. That being said, this books has really cute ideas that even an experienced needle felter might not think of (such as how the toy poodle's coat is achieved). And it's cute just to look through, and see the cute creations.Tip: If you just need a tiny bit of wool, you can use 100% wool yarn. I did this for the nose and ears' interiors. Begin by cutting a length of yarn and pulling the ply apart, then fluffing it until it separates. You can then use it as you do the felting wool.I've included some pics of the westie I made. I used what I had on hand (100% natural wool without other shades removed), so he kind of looks like he's in need of a bath.

Could have used more step by step photos for each dog breed, not just general body shaping. This is "just ok" for very beginners.

I love needle felting and this book is a must have for fiber artists. The book has easy to follow instructions with pictures of many different breeds of dogs you can create with needle felting.While the book is small in size it's a treasure trove of knowledge for beginners or advanced artists.If you enjoy felting small items, specifically dogs you will love this book!

I like this book, and will continue to use it. I needed more help with shaping of the head. I floundered a little with lack of direction. I needed to know more about how "to shape" the head. How does one arrive at that shape?The basic dog shapes are cute.

About the Author

Ruth Sanderson's career as a professional illustrator spans 40 years, and she has illustrated over 85 books for children, including versions of The Twelve Dancing Princesses, Cinderella, Goldilocks, and Papa Gatto. The Golden Key, a Victorian fairytale by George MacDonald, features over forty scratchboard illustrations. Many of the pen and ink drawings for her first adult coloring book, THE WORLD OF FAIRIES, are based on her fairy paintings.  Unlike many of Ruth Sanderson's recent grayscale coloring books, this lovely book of cat designs are done in line drawing format. The designs show a variety of stylized cats and anthropomorphic cats (those wearing human clothes and displaying human characteristics.) Interestingly enough, it is the latter cats which look most realistic though they are dressed as humans. One of my favorite designs is of a cat in human clothes who apparently has kittens as pets.The stylized cats have bold lines and have plenty of room for shading and ease of coloring. The anthropomorphic cats are done with a lighter touch and a high level of detail. Most also include some small and intricate areas to color.There are 24 designs in this book and there are are 12 additional bonus pages that are duplicates of half of the original designs in the coloring book. This is fun to try different techniques or colors on (or to give away to friends if you are so inclined.)This is what I discovered while coloring in this book and testing my coloring medium on the paper:24 Cat designs plus 12 bonus designs for a total of 36 line drawing coloring pagesPrinted one side of the pagePaper is typical inexpensive quality used by CreateSpace: white, thin, slightly rough and non-perforated.The designs do not extend into the binding area. The designs have a framing line at the outer edgesGlue BindingAlcohol-based markers bleed through the page quickly.Water-based markers bleed through in spots.Gel pens and India ink pens leave shadows on back of the page. India ink can bleed through if you apply heavily or multiple coats.Coloring Pencils work well with this paper. I found that I could layers the same color for deeper pigment or multiple colors and I could blend easily using a blending stick. I tested both oil and wax based pencils. I also found that hard lead pencils (like Verithins) leave dents through the paper.I like to use a blotter when working in the book. I use a page of card stock or several sheets of heavyweight paper under my working page. It keeps seeping ink and marring dents from ruining the pages below.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS COLORING BOOK. THE ARTWORK IS FANTASTIC AND I ONLY WISH THE PAPER WAS BETTER QUALITY BUT IT PRETTY REASONABLY PRICED. I HAVE NOT HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO COLOR IN THIS BOOK YET BUT I LOOK FORWARD TO IT VERY SOON.

These drawings are sooo precious! I really look forward to coloring each picture! This is a quality book! If you love Kitties like I do this is the book for you! It is a step above most of the others I have seen!

Erickson, director of the Center for Community Development Investments at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, is published by the Urban Institute Press, 2009The Housing Policy Revolution is a top-notch analysis and review of affordable housing policy in America over the past 50 years and cogent thoughts for future directions. I own this book.Arising out of Erickson's PhD thesis at Berkeley, this book has inputs ranging from MIT to the Urban Institute and Brookings, and the Federal Reserve. Accordingly Erickson has written a thoughtful and careful book with thorough data and policy views in a comprehensive and readable. I have worked in affordable housing for many years, and learned a lot from Erickson's book.Erickson's general view is that development of affordable housing has generally evolved from directly-built and sponsored to a decentralized housing network including CDCs, state and local government agencies, capacity-building intermediaries, new private sector participants, foundations, churches, and other decentralized entities.There are 6 chapters:1. "Directions in housing policy from Lyndon Johnson to Ronald Reagan, 1963-1986". Chapter 1 discusses housing policy history in two phases: rise and fall of direct federal involvement, and federal cutbacks starting in 1981, with reviews of policies and activities from Lyndon Johnson's Great Society through Ronald Reagan's housing cutbacks.2. "Building the decentralized housing network". Chapter 2 looks in detail at the decentralized housing network, showing how the various components grew in sophistication and capacity over the 1980s.3. "Fighting for federal resources for the decentralized housing network". Chapter 3 discusses how the new network matured and secured more funding, influence and production capacity, building more housing than the Great Society programs did, and growing politically. Erickson discusses the establishment of housing tax credits in 1986 and changes and challenges to the tax credit programs over the next 20 years.4. "Lessons learned from what was built". Chapter 4 discusses examples and case studies of individual low-income apartments built by this decentralized housing network, showing growth of expertise and relationships within the network and enhanced capabilities. Erickson provides a deep history of federal housing policy during the 20th century, highlighting the advent of public-private partnerships since the 1970's. This analysis provided a basis for how Seattle area public housing has resulted in mixed use projects that have built commercial & reduced income housing to mix with exclusively low-income. Erickson explains well how private sector and community organizations thrived in absence of direct federal spending, however these "networks" have still been unable to meet the housing needs of America's most needy citizens. In celebrating these public-private partnerships, Erickson also seems to minimize the risk of the sub-prime mortgage market. Overall, a good read to understand modern urban development.

I couldn't agree more with David Hoicka's review. I, too, have been in the affordable housing industry for years (14 now and counting), but only after reading David Erickson's lucid book did a clear picture of housing evolution in this country coalesce for me. From the '60s Great Society to the inchoate CDC network of the '70s, through the Reagan decimation years and subsequent creation of the Low Income Housing Tax Credit program, and finally to the rise, maturation, and sophistication of the "decentralized housing network," Erickson charts the fascinating history of the affordable housing industry, providing invaluable context and inspiring affirmation for the work that we do. Cheers to David Erickson for adding this important volume to the housing policy canon.
