I'm glad I got the hardback version. The images are just beautiful, but actually the most impressive element is the organization and presentation. There is a lot of material here. Marija organizes it into categories that are easy to wrap one's mind around, even just leafing through it (all I've been able to do right now). For example, it is exciting to learn that the snake coil was possibly used for time reckoning in the 4th millenia B.C. Ireland, when I know that on the walls of the Fajada Butte in Chaco Canyon, USA, there is a snake coil that is most definitely used for time reckoning by the ancient people who lived there. At Chaco, you can watch the slivers of light follow the wandering cycles of the Moom, precisely, as well as the more direct yearly cycle of the Sun. (see [...] ). As another example, Marija shows us a snake design on the side of a vase that coils in but then turns around and uncoils back out. It looks like it symbolizes regeneration. This pattern is also an ancient folk dance from Europe where you hold belts in a line, coil in and then uncoil out so as to be looking at the people on the end still coiling in. We still do that dance today. Interestingly, it always had a feel akin to regeneration or rebirth as you come out of the coil; that without having any idea of this kind of symbology. Reads like a text book. Book itself was advertised as used and acceptable. That was true. Some dog eared pages, some minor marks; perfectly readable, looks well loved.

"The Language of the Goddess" is a must-have for anyone interested in symbolism and imagery, as it presents some of the oldest decorative markings ever scratched into stone, bone, and wood. Most of the images, reproduced in line drawings and black-and-white photos, are taken from Neolithic European village sites dating back as far as 7,000 B.C. Thus they are, for the most part, a product of agricultural cultures. However, there is a striking similarity between some of these marks and those found on relics from Paleolithic hunter-gatherer sites, examples of which appear in this book.The link between the images from Neolithic and Paleolithic sites arises at least in part from those cultures' shared worship of the Goddess. In the text accompanying the images, Gimbutas tries to reconstruct the world-view of the European Goddess-centered people. She works by inference, looking at various found objects and their markings--not just in their historical context but also in relation to each other.For instance, in her chapter entitled "Net Motif," she writes, "Signs associated with the framed net -- parallel lines, zig-zags, tri-lines, M's, and chevrons -- place it within the aquatic symbol family. . .the framed net also appears with symbols of becoming: egg, vulva, uterus, fish bladder forms, and plant leaves. This implies that the net is linked with aqua-cosmogony, the life source, and the birth of human, animal, and plant life. . .in other words, it must have been a symbol of the "water of life" well known to us from myths. The net design. . .probably emphasizes the life-giving power of the Goddess."It is interesting that we still speak of "the web of life," and the "interconnectedness of all beings." The web is an ancient image, and just one of many in the book that readers can recognize as still resonating for us now. Some other images which Gimbutas presents are Meander and Water Birds, Streams, Tri-Line and Power of Three, and Deer and Bear as Primeval Mothers.This book is wonderful for textile artists, potters, painters, or poets - indeed for anyone interested in drawing inspiration from the furthest reaches of human history. These are powerful symbols for study, which come alive when given careful attention.

Incredible research and documentation of Goddess worship and matriarchal perspective of ancient cultures. Quite telling is what these ancient societies did not have - weapons of mass destruction, handcuffs, prisons, instruments of torture - you get the idea - nothing that modern society can fathom being without.

I disagree with some of the author's conclusions, however, the reproductions the ancient European art work alone is reason enough to own this book.

This book is a revelation. We were once a peaceful egalitarian society, a matriarchal society. No one wanted for anything. Everyone was equal and we took care of one another and lived in harmony with mother earth. The patiarchal society that has taken over by force has given us the complete perversion of society. We have poverty, an every man for himself attitude. War and mass hatred. We decide things through violence and arrogance with a complete disregard for nature as well as our fellow human beings. This is the Kurgan mans society at its finest. We would be astronomically better off had we remained as a nurturing matriarchal society. We had our heritage taken from us by evil self-serving men. And so it go's.

This was a very good exposition on the minor prophets. These books should be known more as the "brief" prophets. Their message was by no means minor. The author calls them the "clean pages" of the Bible, that is, the pages that are seldom read. We used it in our men's group Bible study. God's message through the minor prophets is pretty consistent throughout. A Major Point for each Bible book was helpful so that we could focus in on a unique message in each book. There is quite a bit in the book to connect the prophecies with our current situation. Sometimes, however, the author went on trails that took us a bit too far outside the message of the prophets. There is a tough balance between audience engagement and focus. One other suggestion: He quoted others quite a bit. I would have liked to have citations so that those who were interested could study them further. Another thing I'd suggest for the Kindle edition: Please put page numbers that line up with one of the print editions. That is a common problem with most Kindle books that are used in a study situation.

Great material that is easy to follow yet thoroughly researched and scholarly in content.Easy to copy key passages for reference notes or for teaching/speaking notes.

Blanchard has done it again. This book has helped me immensely in my bible study planning on the minor prophets. His points are clear and understandable. The book printing is a nice size and the text does not cause me eye to strain. Its an easy book to carry around with plenty of margins to write in notes.

I HAVE BEEN FEELING THE URGE TO STUDY THE MINOR PROPHETS (minor in book size not in relationship with God) . THIS BOOK HAS BEEN A GREAT TOOL IN MY STUDY, WELL WRITTEN, MADE ME WANT TO CONTINUE MY MINOR PROPHETS STUDY.

This book does very little in the way of giving information, background, exegetical study, etc. It reads more like a topical sermon where the preacher bases a message in a text from the Minor Prophets then directly launches into the topic without really dealing with a text. this is an easy read and a good read but not the book for you if you're looking to really learn about the Minor Prophets.

This book is for looking at as much as reading, and it is very well done.If you are going to Seville take the Eyewitness Travel Guide and this Knopf guide. Both books are very good, both colourful and easy to carrry. The Eyewitness guide has better maps, more organized information on hotels and restaurants. The Knopf guide is better on background, culture, architecture, flora and fauna, traditions and way of life. The Knopf guide also has a section, "Seville as seen by painters", and a section "Seville as seen by writers".I would say the Eyewitness guide is more practical, the Knopf guide more romantic, both very important. You will not be disappointed that you got this book. If you are an armchair traveler, this is definitely a good book.

This book was well written by Mr. Ron Hall, for Denver has gone home to heaven in 2012. Ron did a good job recollecting what Denver had said and what they had gone through during the 10 years of their "adventures" as friends and brothers in Christ.I like the details revealed in this book, even though some of the happenings we have already learned in their previous 2 books ("Same kind of different as me." and "What difference do it make?") but this last book gave us much more details behind what have happened.And most of all, this book gave me a glimpse into the more "human" side of Denver, this dear friend of Ron, Debbie and of God, and shows me clearly that God has been writing this miraculous real story ALL along: showcasing His mercy, grace and power, and that He uses willing Christians, even though they could be as human as everyone else.I thank God for giving us Denver, Ron and Debbie, and I am glad that Debbie and Denver were happily reunited in heaven with the Lord, while Ron and Beth and many other people continue to carry on the torch of Ms. Debbie Hall to facilitate the homeless folks to return to normal lives.I felt so privileged to read this true story, really was engineered and directed by God Himself, and played out by wonderful characters who are willing to listen and follow the Lord's guidance and overcome numerous hardships and hanging onto the strength and grace of God.

After seeing the movie based on the original book, I was interested enough to read this follow-up detailing the friendship of Ron and Denver after Miss Debbie’s death. It wasn’t that well written, but frankly people don’t select this for its literary merit. They are intrigued by the deep faith-based friendship of two such widely different men. Over and over through the book, Ron tells us what a true man of God Denver was, but, I have to say, it was Ron who kept turning the other cheek and forgiving Denver’s destructive behavior. Denver had a lot of personality — he was almost a caricature of an old streetwise bum — but often his poor decisions were really aggravating. If it hadn’t have been for Ron and his money bailing him out, his “skitzy” behavior would have ended the story much sooner. I can’t imagine the cost of all those hospital stays for this uninsured old man.But there is no denying the team of Ron and Denver raised a lot of money for the homeless and their deep friendship is an inspiration.

This was a wonderful behind the scenes story of Ron Hall and Denver Moore. It has been several years since I read their book, Same Kind of Different as Me. So this was a wonderful reminder of the relationship between these two very different men. Ron Hall does a great job of sharing Denver's human side.Denver was an amazing man. I loved some of the things that came out of his mouth. To be unlearned, he would express deep thoughts that take you right to the heart of God's love. I found myself chuckling with tears trickling down my face and then the next moment I would be sitting in my chair in awe of the thoughts Denver expressed.I am so grateful that Miss Debbie opened up the door to a relationship with Denver and allowed us to experience the behind the scene story of love, faith, and mercy. I hope this story will allow others to reach out in a sense of grace and allow themselves to discover relationships that reach beyond their comfort zone.

This is an amazing story. How two people totally opposite of one another became friends is almost unreal. Great book and also bought the movie and bought the second book, Same kind of different as me. Both books are a astounding life of people who happened upon each other.

This book is an amazing story of two men from different worlds brought together by the wishes of a special lady. You must read the first two books. Your heart toward homelessness will be broken and you will see these poor people through Denver and Debbie’s eyes. It was life and heart changing for me.

Great story so glad they shared with the rest of us. You can learn something from everyone in life, just open your heart and your mind to differences.

This book allows you to feel how their adventures challenged their friendship and how they equally strengthened their relationship. It really challenged me to evaluate my own relationships and things I could do to help others.

This book gives so much insight into the plight of the homeless and the rich people who don’t understand. Great true story.

I am a member of Skeptics.com ,not because I am a atheist, but because I like to read what unbelieving people write and talk about. I think if the skeptics would read this book the ones with open minds might learn something. This book is about a man that choose to be an atheist at an early age but also choose "to follow the argument wherever it went" and after fifty years the argument lead him to realize that the only logical way to view the world, people, and the universe was through the knowledge that God did all this. Evolution just does not make sense. It did not make sense when I was in the seventh grade and it has not made sense every day since. Atheism does not make sense. So if you want to read a book that shows how a real free thinker came to the conclusion that there is a God, this is a great book.

To a degree, There Is a God delivers on what it claims to do: reveal how the former atheist, Anthony Flew, was led to belief in God. The problem is that this revelation lacks depth and power; in fact, there is scant evidence for why Mr. Flew actually converted to theism in the first place. (And when he does briefly explain, it notably has little to do with faith). What you are left with are bland arguments and rebuttals that certainly work for a semi-autobiographical account for Mr. Flew, but lack the captivating influence to persuade the curious reader. I say this not as an atheist that was “unimpressed” but rather a theist who was just simply bored with most of the book.There is a God doesn’t really get going until page 50 or so. Until then, the book reads like an autobiographical account of Mr. Flew’s upbringing with analysis of the factors that shaped his prior worldview. The author tells us what motivates him on page 81: “the pursuit of valid arguments with true conclusions.” The reason why Flew ascended to belief begins on page 95. The reader is then led on a pilgrimage of reason that sequentially examines different arguments (e.g. cosmological, teleological, fine-tuning, the flaws of Darwinism) for God’s existence that also poke holes in alternative, atheistic arguments.Indeed, Flew does a splendid job of rebutting Hume’s formulation of causality as he relates it to moral, non-physical phenomenon (starting on pg. 60). Appendix A, written by Roy Varghese, is a delightful and quick synopsis of how the “new atheists” fail to address some of the most basic tenets of human existence. Appendix B is a dialogue with N. T. Wright and details a factual synopsis for the historicity of the New Testament and the sufficiency of explanation of the resurrection for the empty tomb and the eyewitness testimony detailed in the Gospels.Overall, less the Appendices, I felt underwhelmed by this book and I think most readers will do just fine without it (unless, of course, you have burning interest in the life and scholarly work of Anthony Flew).

Very insightful. While he didn't become a Christian, the influence of C.S. Lewis and NT Wright, in particular, are especially interesting. As a student of logic, I found his faithfulness to the socratic method honest and credible in guiding him away from a-theism as the mostly likely truth. Easy to read and vulnerable from this brilliant mind!

Though the author doesn't come out and accept God/Christ as his Lord, he does provide an intelectual and logical case that the incomprehensible complexity of our life form could have happened by any other means other than Intelligent Design...well worth the read

His continual references about "going where the evidence leads" brought me to include he had a high level of intellectual honesty and it must have taken a bit of courage to write a book like this after 50 years of professing atheism. Apparently Antony Flew did not become a Christian, but in the mind of secular atheists, he did defect to the other side. The author presents philosophical concepts and arguments in an accessible way, from an author who spent a lifetime toying with the semantics of academic language. Flew's conversion reflects the growing strength of creationist arguments in the light of recent scientific discovery and his commitment to "follow where the evidence leads". Some of these are: where does DNA come from? What is the origin of genetic coding? Why is the universe so finely-tuned for life?The fact that there is no naturalistic explanation for how non-living matter could've developed into self-replicating living biological organisms is not only a deep problem for atheists, it is an elementary realization.The conclusion of this book mirrors something written in about AD56. In the book of Romans 1:20 we read: "For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse".

I loved this book. Fantastic arguments (do not fail to read the appendix)! Worth the read everyone!!

A few years ago a friend gave me a Sudoku calendar for Christmas and I've been hooked ever since. I especially like this version. I gave the 2012 calendar to my husband and he is now hooked too!Why I love this Sudoku calendar:**The squares are big and easy to write in. The colored boxes make it easy to work as well.**The answers are easily accessible. I do the puzzles in ink and I like to double check my answers before moving on.**The variety of puzzle difficulties. I love a hard Sudoku challenge, but there are days when I want something a little less hard. The weekend "easy" puzzles are just the thing.**I am further challenging myself by not writing in the number possibilities and trying to fully reason my way to the answers. So far so good, except for the " hard" puzzle days.**The calendar feature. I can not only work my brain, but I can keep track of the dates and days as well.I highly recommend this puzzle calendar to anyone wanting to challenge their brain in a fun way.

I've recently become a fan of Sudoku and I thought this daily calendar might be the perfect solution. It allows me to complete one puzzle per day, which is about what I have time for. The puzzles are large with large boxes, which allow me to write possible answers in the corners. The puzzles are also in color, which is nice.The puzzles get increasingly more difficult throughout the week and I believe throughout the year also so it is a nice way to ramp up my Sudoku abilities over the course of the year.It is wise to challenge and stretch your brain frequently and I find this daily calendar a fun way to do so!

I am not that intuitive math genius! But I gave the 2011 version to a friend who is and who has worked Sudoku puzzles since they appeared. She liked it so well she's getting this edition for Christmas.Update: I didn't get to see this friend before she left for vacation. When I saw her about a week into the New Year, she was literally anxious to discover whether I'd gotten her the 2012 edition. And happy to discover that I had.

This was a gift to a friend who loves doing these puzzles. They look forward to playing a new game each day, just like getting a paper and doing the crosswords. With out all the trash to contend to.

Someone let an art director take over the decisions that a puzzlemaker should make. The numbers show up in fancy, symmetrical or curving arrangements which are pretty but illogical. They leave gaps and holes that prevent many of the inferences typically made in solving a Sudoku. Some are simply unworkable except by guessing (which usually doesn't work anyway). Sudokus are not works of art. If numbers and their placement had been chosen at random, the puzzles would be much, much better.

Always enjoy this calendar all year long! Keeps my mind sharp as I age! I have purchased this calendar every year for 5 years.

I have purchased this calendar for the last few years and am always satisfied. All the games are fun whether challenging or simple. A must for Sudoku lovers.
