This was a huge hit with our Thomas fan. We bought a couple of "lift the flap" books for a road trip we were planning, hoping they might keep him occupied for 5-10 minutes (a veritable lifetime in toddler years). This book kept him happy for an hour. AN HOUR of uninterrupted happy two-year-old. In the car. Strapped into a rear-facing car seat. No snacks, no screaming, no kicking the seat, just happily lifting the flaps and absorbing all the Thomas magic found within.He still loves this book, and while he's torn off several of the flaps, he does feel bad about it. He requests it often, and loves to see what treasures he can find in Sir "Poppemhap's" house, or in the suitcases on the platform. Best book purchase we've made this year :)

My almost 2 year old loves opening all of the flaps, which come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Most of the flaps are pretty secure, but some of the smaller and oddly shaped ones (little triangles) rip easily. If you've got an eager or rough toddler, you may want to read this one together to make sure they don't rip the tiny, dainty flaps off.

Such a wonderful lift-the-flap book! I was hesitant to buy this because of the hefty price but I am glad I did. My toddlers are Thomas fans and so they like looking through the book. They also LOVE lifting the flaps and looking under them. This is a big, colorful book with lots of flaps to discover and has good educational value (has colors, numbers, etc.) The cons are that there aren't very many pages and that I have to supervise my kids when they are given this book because they can easily tear the flaps apart (I have a couple that had to be taped back together). But overall, I would highly recommend this book!

Our boys love this book! With the exception of a couple of the thinner flaps on the "Sir Topham Hat's house" page, the book has proved surprisingly durable over the years we have been using it. It is really open ended, too, so you can read it in creative ways. I am also planning to give it as a gift. I think it is good for train lovers ages 2-5.

When my daughter was about 6 years old, I bought this book for her. I gave it away to another friend when my daughter turned 15. Recently when looking for a book for my niece I looked for this book online. She is a Thomas fan and I remembered how many enjoyable hours my daughter and I had reading and looking at this book. It was the most fun pop up book ever! I was so happy that I was able to find it here on Amazon and to give it to my niece. Really a fun book!

Thomas the Tank Engine's Big Lift - And - Look BookMy grandson loves Thomas everything, but this book, while it looks like he will like it has what I call a "Small" problem in that the pieces of cardboard that you lift to see what is hidden below are very small and I found those pieces difficult to open. They are difficult to locate also and I'm a grandma, not a 2 1/2 yr. old. I plan on putting scotch tape on each tab, folding over the tape so he can grab that and maybe even find them better. It's especially strange considering the title is "Thomas the Tank Engine's Big Lift - And - Look Book." "Big" Lift really doesn't apply to the lift part, but it is a larger sized book. Not thick, just a full sized book with a good cardboard cover.I would still buy this book knowing the problem in advance, but it helps to be aware. I really don't know why it was needed to make the little covers so small, children have varying levels of dexterity as do grandmas! ;-)Delivery was fast, packaging was perfect, no complaints there. I would order a similar item again.

My son is 13 months old and this is his favorite flap book. It's the only flap book that doesn't frustrate him and he can spend up to 15-20 minutes playing quietly with it, without moving on to the next thing. I think it's because the flaps aren't all horizontal or vertical squares like most other books. They're at all angles and are all shapes and he loves that. As for durability, he's managed to rip of about 30 percent of the flaps so far, and I'm about to buy a duplicate book for replacement when he's torn all of the flaps off. But this doesn't bother me at all, because the free time I've been given because of this book is definitely worth it.

My son loves it, but it's all about the flip ups, there's little writing in it. The book is large. It's cute.

Daniel C. Matt is a leading authority on Jewish mysticism. For twenty years, he served as Professor at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. The word 'Zohar' and 'Kabbalah' and being broadcast far & near even from Holloywood. Tie a red wool string to you wrist and become empowered with supreme spiritual energy! RIght...As an adherent to the 'Sod' level of the study of the Divine Torah, which is a search for the deepest meaning & understanding of the 'mysticism' of the Torah ( The Divine Teachings of Ohr EinSof....(The Infinite Light)) I can assure that this production of the translation (which actually is an impossibility) of the Holy Zohar is Far & Away the very best in several respects than any attempt to produce it in any language other than the original Aramaic know to man to this day. Aramaic is the language that the original was written in and to translate a Semitic language into any other language is doing it a huge injustice. Semitic languages ie; Hebrew, Arabic, and Aramaic (which was formulated during the Hebrew captivity in Babylon in approx 300BC) is a syntheses of Hebrew/Arabic. Semitic languages are meant to convey 'pictures' or 'movies' unlike English, French, German, etc that for the most part are meant to convey clear cut hard and fast 'meanings'. Semitic languages 'speak' on several levels of understanding (Binah) simultaneously so that interpretation is much deeper and broader than any other language. Additionally, Hebrew is the only language know to man that provides a 'numerical value' to each consonant and therefore each word has a numerical 'significance' ...additionally, words/sentences develop as it were numerical significance that can be recognized systematically throughout 'scripture'. This is know in the Hebrew as 'Gamatria'. Science utilizes mathematics in order to 'prove' hypotheses thereby rendering the 'provable/real. Hebrew/Aramaic through association yields this similar opportunity for removing the obscurity of the influence on semantics to reveal 'hidden' layers of meaning at various 'depths'. This is the realm of the teaching of the Zohar and is not very well know to 'modern man' simply because it shows 'movies' on a adapt persons 'heart' and is ALWAYS speaking allegorically & anthropromorphorically. Asking the wayfarer....what does this mean to you?! An since 'words fall on deaf ears' the heart of the man must be attuned to the sound of the guiding Light/Truth ...so few men/women these days care about much more than their income, new car, new house or anything else in the created 'world' that even considering there are 'other realms/worlds parallel to this one that are every bit as real as that which their eyes behold. But consider this......if a person, G-D forbid, was alive but devoid of their 5 senses ....would this 'world' exist for them? The answer is of course....no. Because without the use of the 5 sense none of 'this' does exist!. It only exists because our 'created senses' tell or inform us that what we see, smell, feel, hear, taste is 'real' when those sensory preceptors are no more ...and the 'spirit' that invigorates our bodies is all that is left...then the 'True Existence' becomes manifest as it were. One of the many features of the study/implementation of Zohar is that is affords the human the opportunity to witness or begin to see the 'hidden' realms of 'reality' even while he/she is still in the realm of 'Malchut' Hebrew for Kingdom. So back to this rendering of the magnificent Zohar and an exegetical teaching of the Divine Eternal teaching of the Torah... for that is the format of the teaching of the 'original' Zohar having absolutely nothing to do with the Hollywood version. It is this ancient teaching of the Zohar....the hidden levels of the Torah given to man by the Supreme One of all that is known by the sensory perceptions of man....that R' Matt has spent many years of his life rendering in a language completely ill suited for the teaching the original Aramaic attempts to convey and if anyone would entice you to receive 'Zohar' teaching from them without pointing out that the Zohar is teaching the deeper levels of the Torah then rest assured that they DO NOT know the meaning of man's exsistance here on earth, it's purpose or it's result and what they would teach you is bogus. R'Matt has to this date produced seven volumes in English replete with voluminous footnotes and reference to other works validating his interpretations and is a truly scholarly work worthy of the name of the work ....Zohar....Resplendent Light! Buy it, study it, try to fashion your thoughts, speech & actions in accordance with it's teachings and witness for yourself whether or not it is a much higher manner of existence leading one to a much higher more significant reason for man's development in & of the Kingdom.

The scholarship and dedication to the project Daniel Matt has put into this translation, is worth collecting of the series alone. Coupled with the rebuilt Aramaic text available online for the volumes (Seven last I looked is not out yet) makes this a very desirable set to have for those involved in Hebrew textual studies. I continue to marvel at the wonders I continue to find with this translation. And the copious notes are amazing. If you haven't yet begun to use this set of texts you may want to get to gathering volume one is fading fast... Buy this entire set! You will not be sorry.

The ongoing translation on the Zohar continues in English. In French it was begun by Charles Mopsik, who died alas after completing his translation of Genesis and Zohar on two Megillot. The reader who wants to know how Kabalah reads Scripture can go on thanks to Pr Matt's masterwork.

I have written a bit previously on the earlier volumes of this series. I enjoy these books because they are a serious effort to produce an accessible edition of these works in English. This is not more New Age dribble by those spreading nonsense and pop psychology cloaked in the Kabbalah. This is intelligent work by real scholars.

I will always rate Daniel Matt's work with 5 Stars! Right now I am almost through reading Parashat Tazri'a - "She Yields Seed" (Leviticus 12:1 - 13:59). There is so much here to try and digest. Many times, I am in awe in what I have read! So, I have had to put the book down and go back to it again later. It is good reading in my leisure time over the Sabbath. I read at my own pace. This Volume will keep me busy for the entire year. Sometimes I wish I was in a group studying the same works, but since that is not happening, I am very happy to rely on the Ruach HaKodesh to enlighten me and then meditate on what I have read. I want to nourish my soul and my mind as much as possible. The Zohar offers hope for the future and I am so glad that Daniel Matt and his many Helpers are bringing out the very best in what the Zohar has to offer.

this series, I have read 1 - 4 so far, has been incredible.the wisdom hidden between the lines (which is really only viewable in Hebrew) has been tremendously insightful, the nuances of the words is so so deep, more than most can imagine.it's really easy to see why at one time the catholic church wanted to ban the bible and quran and institute this, though I am glad they didn't. The reason I say that is because true understanding will never come in only one language and in one series of books, but rather a conglomeration of all, but this series is probably the MOST enlightening of all of them.I would recommend this series to anyone interested in the faith.the only complaint I have about the series is that as a homeless and disabled man myself it hurts me to carry one of these on my back, and god knows I couldn't carry 2 or 3 as genesis and exodus are both 3 volumes each.this REALLY needs put on the kindle, I can't keep buying the hardbacks, my back is growing soft from them, I am physically in pain from it, I wish Daniel C. Matt and Stanford press would show some compassion and put it on the kindle, but I guess they are worried about their "profits" and not their prophets.

So far I've tried the Hazelnut Dacquoise Cake, Coffee Genoise, and the Summertime Strawberry Cake. Mr. Mesnier layers recipe over recipe, which has actually enabled me to be more versatile. The hazelnut meringue cake layers can be made in smaller sizes for the best tasting cookies you've ever eaten, and you can stuff them with the sinfully delicious freezable chocolate mousse (the best I've ever had) and serve as "ice cream" sandwiches. The pastry cream for the Strawberry cake (without Grand Marnier)is perfect for eclair filling. Great instruction on how to make ganache and how to temper chocolate. I do have two suggestions for any who attempt many of the cakes in this book- there is A LOT of folding of ingredients. Do yourself a favor and buy a large folding spatula, and! try freezing your egg whites the day before and defrosting them to room temperature when ready to make your cake. A proper spatula and this nifty freezing trick will keep your batters or meringues from deflating. And I'm pretty sure that you'll want to have use of a stand mixer, bc some of these (cake) recipes will not be easy w/o it. Mr. Mesnier gives you a list of supplies at the beginning of the book, too. Everything I've made from this book has been exceptional.Update: I thought I'd note for the vanilla custard sauce that goes into the hazelnut dacquoise cake- Messnier says that egg must be cooked up to 160 degrees to reach the safe zone, but I have found that in order for this sauce to thicken, it must reach about 180 degrees. Also, for the Summertime Strawberry Cake- do not try and fold the flour mix into the egg mixture while it's in the stand mixer bowl AND the flour should be added slowly (I sift small amounts at a time) and fold. Kind of tricky :)

I am a good cook but I am not a good baker. I learned about baking technique in this book and I appreciated how Mr. Mesnier took the time to explain why he chose which cake for a particular occasion. He also describes a cake and progresses through three versions of a similar recipe from simple to spectacular so you can vary it as your expertise grows. Lovely addition to my baking library. I have not used any recipes in this book but I plan too as he did not list too many recipes with obscure ingredients or complicated recipes. Many of these cakes seem possible for the novice baker. Also, as a White House Buff I appreciated the narrative of Roland Mesnier.

What good is Beautiful Cakes without the pictures? I cannot believe you would leave out what for me is the most important part.

I am a pretty good baker, but had never thought I could tackle more advanced techniques such as genoise with soaking syrups and different kinds of meringues. This book took the fear out of it, and with the tips and superb step-by-step directions, I was quite successful my first tries! One of the best things about this book is the freedom to take the basics and add your own twist, just as Chef Mesnier has demonstrated by starting with the same cake recipes but dressed up or down to fit the occasion. There are also other types of pastry (i.e., brioche "peaches") that are examined in this book as well as just cakes.

Depending on what I'm cooking, have been using this book as a reference guide. This time I was grilling a pork dish. Alas, the page with the pork rub was machine cut from the book. After failing to find the required page, sure enough there were other pages missing too. Not to disrespect Paul Kirk; but, I really don't want this book anymore. With regards to the pages that I do have, the book is strictly for reference only. It is difficult to really get ideas from just flipping through the pages. Best to know what you are going to cook and then just glance through this to see about kicking it up a notch.

This book could pass as an old classic or as a new one. You can sense that this book was not made by a chef gathering recipes and making a book out of it. There is great wisdome in Paul's recipes and the ones he borrows are also solid. Very, very few bbq books are as good in recipes as Kirk's. Probably none.

This glorious paperback is a once-in-a-decade event in the world of cookbooks: somone who genuinely understands his subject clearly and succinctly explains it in a way that is easy for anyone to understand, even complete novices.Several times, the author uses the term "master class". This term is usually reserved when an acknowledged master of the subject decides to transfer his skills and abilities to others via a special class. At first, I thought that the use of this term was a little overblown. How wrong I was.He goes through these subjects: ingredients, rubs, marinades, mops, sauces, and other (salsa, relish, ketchup). Each subject is expertly covered, and tells you everything you need to know. He explains the principle and structure of each one, and then gives instructions on how to create it for yourself. Recipes are then presented for those who do not wish to do the experiments on their own. My only complaint is the table of contents: more detail would be a great help.This book is the only one you really need when it comes to barcecue sauces. If you don't already have it, I suggest you get it and throw away the other barbecue books you have.

I recently got this book, haven't finished reading it yet but I've already learned a lot. He has some really great information and pointers, and a lot of knowledge on the ingredients and how they should be used. The thing that I really like is that he teaches you how to develop your own rubs, marinades and sauces along with providing many recipes. Rubs for example he shows a chart of ingredients for several different rubs so you can see the common ingredients and what makes them different.The book is written with a real culinary backbone,which isn't surprising considering he teaches classes on BBQ, This would be the book that would accompany that class. he uses many definitions right from the dictionary. The recipes are easy to read, follow, and are very clear. Some recipes may be a little advanced for people new to this, but overall are not difficult. Today I smoked some chicken wings and used a baste in the book and a BBQ sauce. Both were easy to make and I already had almost all the ingredients in the kitchen, AND they turned out GREAT!The only section that has techniques for smoking is the introduction, so if that's what you're looking for I wouldn't recommend this book, for that I recommend "backyard BBQ" by Richard W. McPeake. Backyard BBQ: The Art of Smokology He goes into great detail on preparing meat, smoking/brining times,and temperatures. That's the book I turn to for that information, and also has some great recipes. "championship BBQ Sauces" is great for all the things you need to kick up your BBQ. Really great marinades/bastes, rubs, sauces, mustards, relishes, salsas, flavored oils and vinegars. There's also a helpful section for measurement conversions, and a quantity guide to tell you how much rub, marinade, or sauce you need for given amounts of meat.To sum it up, this book is a MUST HAVE if you are into BBQ. Like I said there are other books that teach technique, this gives you everything you need for recipes and gives you all the tools you need to develop your own great recipes. I've been looking for this book for a long time and have finally found it!

Paul Kirk is the "Baron of BBQ" and if you study this book you will follow his footsteps and develop your own BBQ winning rubs and sauces and more. Study, not just read this book is my suggestion, its a training manual but a good read also, and it will never be outdated. A primer for serious barbecue.This is my third copy of his book because i wore out the others.This book can be priceless if you want to bring your bbq skills to a competition level.

I did enjoy this book it gives some good pointers for how to develop a rub or sauce, It had some great recipes as well, the couple I tried were good, I do not think it brought anything new to the table that I have not read in other books or online. For someone who has been smoking/ grilling awhile I do not know that it offers anything new or different. But with that in mind for someone starting to get into smoking or grilling it offers some good ideas for balancing flavor profiles, as well as creating your own signature rubs or sauces

I purchased my first smoker a few months ago but given the weather in Montreal I only started to use it last week, finally. I purchased this book on recommendations from others on this site and do not regret it at all! I have made several sauces and rubs and they are outstanding! I also had to go and purchase many of the ingredients that I did not have which took a while and at 5 different stores. I went through the book and made a list and after spending over 100.00 I had a complete collection of items I never had or heard of! This is my first book I have ever purchased for BBQ and I do not regret it. I have had compliments that I never had before and I am finally enjoying BBQing!
