Events such as the recent Lutheran - Catholic declaration on justification are testaments to the growing ecumenicalism within the Christianity community. Despite progress in this area differences remain on several issues, such as the relationship between scripture, tradition and church. While not a core theological issue, arguably, the single largest stumbling block between rank and file believers is the role of the Virgin Mary; Catholics feeling that Protestant undervalue her role and Protestants contending that much Marian dogma is unfounded.Though the role of the Virgin Mary is an interesting question, prior to coming across this book, I had been unable to find a resource that engaged the issue in what I considered to be a balanced, critical and comprehensive manner; much of the Protestant material in this area being either superficial or overly polemical (e.g. Rhodes, White, McCarthy etc.), whereas Catholic material was either extremely terse (e.g. Catholic Encyclopedia) or devotional.While this book has too much strength three aspects that I found particularly helpful were its respectful tone, its explanation of Catholic terminology and the discussion of recent Marian dogmas within the Catholic Church. First, with respect to tone, discussion of the Virgin Mary can be a sensitive issue and if one is not careful such discussions can rapidly escalate into shrill emotionally charged exchanges. Hence, I was impressed by the authors' tone. While arguing forcefully and disagreeing in several areas they maintained a civil and respectful dialogue, engaging with each other rather than just talking past each other in an attempt to score debating points.Second, with respect to terminology, often misunderstanding or assumptions regarding language contribute to disagreement. Such terminological misunderstanding is especially acute in theological discourse, in the present case Catholic terminology surrounding Mary sounds foreign, and excessive, to many modern Protestant readers. While not removing all disagreement in this area Longenecker's explication of terms like mediatrix and co-redeemer are helpful in reducing some extreme interpretations and misunderstandings.Finally, the dialogue highlighted the connections or potential connections between The Catholic Church's understanding of alleged Marian apparitions and recent Marian dogmas. It had always struck me as odd why now, after all these centuries the Catholic Church decided to formalize the Immaculate Conception and the Assumption. After reading this discussion it strikes me that there is significant connection between these dogmas and beliefs concerning Marian apparitions. It is a subject I would be interested in pursuing further.Overall this is an excellent book that I highly recommend for anyone interested in the subject of the Virgin Mary. I am hopeful that similar books on issues such as papal infallibility are either available or forthcoming..

THIS WAS A GIFT SO I DO NOT KNOW

This book gives you both sides of the debate on the extent of honor due to Mary in the Christian Church. Longenecker and his debater went to college together but met again years later, after Longenecker had become a Catholic. Discussions progressed and eventually gravitated to this discussion on Mary. Longenecker presents and then defends the actual teaching of the Church on honoring Mary (as opposed to the stereotype other Christians think the Church teaches). The opponent asks the hard questions and conducts a well thought out debate. Whichever side of the debate you are on, this book would be an asset to your library.

This book is excellent and honest. There is no relativism here. This is a serious conversation/debate between committed christians, who are honestly trying to discern Christ's will for their lives and the church.Authors Dwight Longnecker and David Gustafson go head to head on Mary on these pages. Longnecker, a convert to Catholicism, defends Catholic doctrine articulately in the face of a very competent challenge from Gustafson. This book, which comes out of ECT (Evangelicals and Catholics Together) is a clear example of the search for truth via serious dialog and debate. While I felt Longnecker was a little too gentle in places, and gave some unnecessary ground, in general I thought it was a "gloves off" but deeply civil discussion between two christians.I must admit that this book surprised me. As an orthodox Catholic I find the thought of the Catholic church being "together" with evangelicals problematic. We are dealing with a group of people who count bigots like Dave Hunt and Tim LaHaye as part of their membership. It can be argued that they butcher the gospel by dividing it up and placing an unhealthy and ahistorical emphasis on the book of revelation, placing it ahead of the gospels and the ministry of Jesus Christ. We are talking about people who vehemently opposed having a Catholic priest chaplain of the House of Representatives. Catholics need to always remember that Norman Vincent Peale told evangelicals that they could not vote for JFK because he was Catholic. They are now doing the same thing to a mormon presidential candidate I won't mention by name. It is clear therefore that these people's theology makes learning from their past mistakes difficult. Evangelicals deny the sacraments Christ himself founded. They rip people away from historic christianity without even a pause or a semblance of humility in the name of evangelization, even though they have no claim to apostolic authority. The list of abuses goes on and on.But I note that evangelicals who are as conservatively protestant as I am Catholic list the same set of concerns about Evangelicals and Catholics Together, albeit filtered through the lens of their own ideology. When I see this, I remind myself of the call to unity in the gospels. It is a struggle, but I remind myself that many evangelicals are honest and sincere Christians who believe what it is that they say: Hunt, Chick, and others notwithstanding. While the Catholic church must continue to proclaim the truth, we must not forget the emphasis that Jesus places on love for our brethren.A good challenging book. Highly recommended.

I went to the authors' alma mater, and like them, took a different path. BJU was anti-Catholic, but these two grads--an Episcopal Federal Judge and Catholic Priest (living near the campus)--are allies, not enemies. The Reformation is long past, and we Protestants have largely discovered that what unites us in Christ is greater than that which divides us (minor doctrines). That being said, there is considerable difference of opinion about Mary, and I confess I've never read a book devoted (pun intended) to her. The title says "debate" but it is more of a cordial dialogue between two good friends. I found myself thinking that, even though I don't agree with the Catholic position for the most part, their claims are not egregious, and in many cases, once clarified, they don't sound as bad as I'd thought. This is a substantive, extremely well written book that will make you think. I found a copy at a seminary library and had to have my own copy. This book needs to stay in print! Anyone interested in studying Catholic/Protestant differences will benefit from this outstanding discussion.

This is a profound story of love, the search for self, and the resulting spiritual growth of the principal characters. Adventure, and intrigue are laced with humor.The major characters develop through their open hearted commitment to Kim. Don't expect to read it just one time, but prepare to add it to your list of favorites.

I read Christopher Hitchens's review of Rudyard Kipling in his book Love, Poverty, and War: Journeys and Essays, and I decided to go to the source. Kipling's portrayal of the characters are entirely multi-dimensional, making them relatable in our commonality but we can fully understand their intentions with the character development we are provided. The dialogue, if one is unfamiliar with the dialect, slang, and 19th century British English, can be difficult to follow upon first passing, but the story-line is very easy to follow. I would not compare this to contemporary literature as it is simply too different to the current literary style, different literary objectives and exposition, and very different contemporary (19th century Indian-British English) dialogue. However, if you want to get an understanding of Rudyard Kipling's writing, if you want to see the relationship as described by a contemporary of the Indian colony and its colonizers, or simply want to enjoy a well written story from late 19th century British literature, this book will not disappoint.

This was at first glance a book about a boy. A very resourceful boy, at that. Who as the story opens shows us that he has conquered the childhood games with his cleverness and recognition of the importance of symbolic acts. He meets the spirit guide of the next stages of his life in the lama. Together they take the "long walk" of the Grand Trunk, an ancient road from Calcutta to Kabul. This river of people becomes a character in the narrative by itself. It sweeps them to their separate visions, the old man lama's of a river where he will be renewed and the boy's search for the red bull in the green field.Kim is taken into the custody of his father's old regiment, forcing him to realize his status as a sahib. He takes this arrangement in stride partly because he is curious and willing to learn what the whites have to offer but also he knows and proves that he can leave when he wills to. What he learns is the elements and tricks of The Game, a term even in the 19th century for the espionage business.With the lama who is still searching for his river, Kim travels into the mountains north and west of the Punjab were they encounter rival spies working for the Russians who have a State interest in Afghanistan and India. Both Kim and the lama come to harm; Kim takes responsibility for the old man's health and safety and brings him to a friend's home off the mountains where they both can heal.Before the story closes, both recognize they have found what they are searching for and found each other too

Kim is a splendid novel by Rudyard Kipling. It's well worth a read.The problem is that there are a lot of Kindle versions of `Kim' available at the Kindle store. Lots of them are terrible. A very few are good. Unfortunately, the reviews for Kim are amalgamated into one big group of reviews, and so finding the best one to buy is difficult - near impossible. And so I make this review. Well -- and I do have an edition available for the Kindle myself.Since I first made my review of kindle editions of Kim back in 2010, many new editions of Kim for the Kindle have appeared, and many of the old (terrible) ones have vanished from the Amazon catalogue.So I'm updating this review, with information on all the editions of Kim that have appeared since I last updated the review, and I've removed the notes on all those that are no longer available. This review was last updated in April 2013This review comments on each edition I've found, with a live link to the reviewed edition for the good editions and the honourable mentions. I can't link to all of the editions, because of a limit on the number of product links allowed in a review. However, I have given the ASIN for the other editions.First, the ones that have a good quality of text and formatting. All of these have proper typographic quotes and dashes, and italic text where they should. They also have reasonable or good paragraph formatting.Kim (Penguin Modern Classics)ePenguinAn excellent version of the text. Occasional typos, probably only a few more than in the printed book.The footnotes are hyperlinked both ways, so they're easy to follow.This edition also comes with an introductory essay, but opens to that, rather than the start of the actual text of Kim.This text is based on the revised text of the American 1941 Burwash edition, itself based on the English 1937-1939 Sussex edition. I only found two definite typo in the sample text (Kutu instead of Kulu, and Oh instead of Ohé). It's also very nicely formatted, with good formatting of chapter starts and paragraphs. Italics, curly quotes and proper dashes, of course. No real extras - a paragraph or two about Kipling is all, really. I hated this book. I made myself read it because I felt like I owed it to myself to see what this author so many people love thought of Estonia. I was blessed with a trip to Estonia at the beginning of September, 2013, and I loved it. This book is a disservice to anyone who may be contemplating a trip to this tiny Baltic country. Theroux uses Estonia as a stomping ground, as a backdrop for him to just rant. The entire book is him complaining about all of the things he doesn't like about Estonia, Estonians, and things that have nothing to do with either, like Israel. He went on several rants about that. I just felt like I was reading a book written by some old cranky bigot, which I guess for some people is charming, but I felt like he was an insensitive, idiot. What made me the most angry about this book is that throughout the book there are about 5 paragraphs that could have been conversation starters, addressing the nature of oppression, and so on. This could have been a very good book but he chose the easy way out and just wrote what he must have thought his readers would want to hear. I am happy to give this book to the library, but only because I could never bring myself to trash a book.

I have been to Estonia about 3 times and come from an Estonian heritage, so I was interested in reading this author's take on a year in the country. As it was his personal take on life there I have to give him leeway for that but generally it was an unsatisfactory book. The impression was rather dour overall and left me more with an takeaway of his problems and issues with life and being there than on the country as a whole. I personally think this does not reflect an accurate or an interesting view of the country, but if you wish to read a book about an individual's life abroad and the struggles therein then this might be a good book to read. But for an accurate picture of Estonia and its people I would skip this book.

I must first admit that my personal bias as an exiled (by the Soviets)Estonian,living down under in another "periphary" colours my view of this book.Having read one of the first Amazon reviews for the book and noted the negativity expressed there,I was somewhat intrigued as to what Theroux's problem had been during his "winter of discontent" while accompaning his wife on a Fulbright Scholarship in Estonia.I made the mistake of purchasing the book to discover that the author was merely using his "Estonia" as a sort of stage to show off his intellectual prowess and extensive reading by using a series of quotes which seldom helped to clarify and more often created confusion as to what exactly he was on about in describing the country accurately. Indeed he seems to spend more time talking about other countries than the country that the books title claims to be about.I generally have not minded being the brunt of uninformed "witiscisms"about the land of my birth over the last sixty years,but I found this tome more akin to the sort of writings produced by Putins FSB and Nashi youth propoganda machine.Sadly it also reinforces for others a feeling of also being shafted by another occasional"ugly American" (I am reminded of a lesser reaction, from some quarters, to his brother Paul's travel book on the Pacific Islands and New Zealand).My only recommendation is to Mrs Theroux ,PLEASE next time when you are traveling,leave your husband at home!

This book says more about Alexander Theroux than it does about Estonia and Estonians! He seems to be a glass half empty person and someone who failed to get to know Estonia and the Estonians as we have done. He appears to have expected Estonia to be just like any part of the United States and, as it isn't, been thoroughly disappointed in it in every respect. I've never read such a negative book nor one that is merely a writer's self indulgence in his own misery. I gave up on it very soon and would recommend that no one wastes their money on it. The oil painting by his wife which appears on the cover says it all!It should be called "A Peripheral Ramble Through the Periphery" to emphasise how little he knows about Estonia or its people. No sense emerges of his engagement with the people or with the culture as we know it; his principal viewpoint seems to be that neither is like America and its people and culture and, therefore, not worthy of careful examination or analysis.

Hello, I feel compelled to write a review as I am an American living in Tallinn and purchased this book.It is one of the most hateful books I've ever read. There is even an entire chapter called "Why I hate Estonia", and almost every sentence starts with "I hate..." Here's how that chapter starts: "I hate the pointless cold. I hated the fact that most people are sour but consider that normal. I hated the ungrammatical '5,2 litre' alcohol content comma, when it should be a period '5.2' liter!"The author is badly uninformed about the region. Sentences like "I have heard similar things about Latvia". Riga, Latvia is a 4 hour bus ride away...Many of the authors complaints are about how unfriendly the people are. In my experience it's the exact opposite and Estonians are noticeably friendlier than Americans.At one point in the book he mentions "There is a disconcerting amount of graffiti in Estonia". Again, badly misinformed about the region. There is significantly more graffiti in cities such as Berlin, Prague, and Kiev.

Despite its title, the book "Estonia" by Alexander Theroux is not a travelogue. It is basically author's reaction to sights and sounds in Estonia, i.e. it is about Theroux himself. As an Estonian, I found a number of factual errors (that do not matter greatly, however). The book must be read with patience, despite the frequently outspoken lingo. Let's make this clear. This book is an excellent read for someone following the Sufi path. But it contains so much depth that an ordinary person will find it difficult to comprehend. The author is a renowned Sufi saint that shares his experience through parables. Each time you read the same chapter, you get a new meaning. This is not a book to be read only once or to be read at one go. You have to meditate of the meaning of each chapter to be able to understand.

As ampangbear said, this is not a book for beginners. It is, in fact, quite intense. When I read it, I had to stop and rest after a few pages!It is clear that Sheikh ibn Arabi saw and understood what we do not. His explanations challange the very limits of our beings. Yet, in the end, we are left with the removal of another Veil that seperated us from Allah.

Mind blowing...

The book is for travellers on the sufi path who seek guidance regarding seclusions. It covers much of the stuff involved including but not limited to preparation, duration of seclusion, guide-lines on visions and spiritual experience during the seclusion. The notes were clearly explained, and this is by far, my favourite Ibn Arabi book.

It's a very excellent book!

Good read

I love this book. It's very insightful and a quick read. However, just because it is a quick read doesn't mean that it is easy to understand.

Great book! I bought one long time ago, but I lend it to someone and I didn't get t back, so I need it to give myself a new copy.
