Veronica Roth's new book Carve the Mark takes a dive into the sci-fi realm. Personally I love the genre, and often read books from it. I was so excited to read her new book, despite the mix reviews I've seen on Goodreads. I will do my best to discuss what others have criticized and why I believe those criticisms are very narrow-minded. Roth completely hit this one out the park for me and I have quite the book hangover.Carve the Mark is set in outer space in a world that is unique and dark. Our main characters Cyra and Akos are from opposing groups of people; Cyra is Shotet, a tyrannical nation that seeks to conquer the rest of the planets in the galaxy. Akos is from Thuvhe, a community of morally straight and narrow people, who are gentle and hate violence. In Cyra's and Akos' world, a magical current flows through the galaxy which contributes to every individuals "current gift". Cyra's current gift is dealing out pain with just a touch, a pain she also has to endure every minute of her life. Akos' current gift is his ability to negate other's current gifts. While others would see their current gifts as useful, Cyra and Akos believe theirs to be a great burden. Others seek to use them for their own gain. Cyra in particular is used as her brother's torturer and executioner to any who go against his tyranny. What I found most refreshing was the gender role switch between Cyra and Akos. Cyra is the strong and fierce one of the two. Her current gift has turned her into a fierce individual, one who has no qualms with taking matters into her own hands, even if it means a fight to the death. As the title Carve the Mark suggest, Cyra's people, Shotets, "carve a mark" into their arms for each life they take. While some do it as a show of strength and pride like Cyra's brother, others like Cyra do it as a reminder of the evil deeds they have done.Akos is the opposite of Cyra because he's gentle and cringes at the thought of violence. Thrust into Cyra's world, Akos is forced to betray those beliefs and turns to violence to survive. You see, in their world certain people are born with "fates" that oracles like Akos' younger brother can see. Not everyone has a fate, but those who do can't escape them. It's due to Akos' fate that is forced into Cyra's Shotet world. Both characters struggle to deal with their fates and their own personal demons. I found Cyra and Akos to be authentic and raw. Their budding romance has not come easy and I loved that it didn't. It was real and honest. Each found something in the other that they benefitted from, and they ultimately changed each other. Cyra learned that she could be more than just a weapon that's used by her brother. Akos taught her that she could rise above her gift and that her gift does not define her. Akos learned that the Shotet people he's grown to despise all of his life are not as black and white when it comes to their brutal nature as he thought.Veronica Roth has received some harsh criticisms in two areas of her book. Many believe that her story is racist in terms of the portrayal of the Shotet and Thuvhe people. In some areas she describes the Shotet's as bronzer skin and their language sounds "harsh". Thuvhesit's are painted to be of fairer skin and their language is more softer and graceful. People feel this is a depiction of Blacks and Whites, and due to the language of Shotets being described as harsh, they feel it has racist undertones. I will speak out against this claim because if people read more closely, Cyra's brother is described to be of lighter skin with lighter eyes and he's Shotet. Here's a case where people are reading too much into it and blowing smoke when there's no fire.Another major critique Roth has received has to deal with Cyra's current gift. Although she can dish out pain, she lives with that same pain every day. Roth has spoken about knowing people in her immediate social circle who live with chronic pain in their daily lives, and wrote about a character that deals with the same issues. However, some people feel like she's an ableist because they feel she makes Cyra's pain define her. Veronica Roth did an interview with NPR and discussed how her character was inspired by people having chronic pain. The interviewer says that pain could be a gift, and Roth agrees. The transcript can be found HERE . Again, people are not understanding Roth's intention with Cyra as a character and the message she is sending. Veronica blatantly states how chronic pain is underestimated often by doctors, statistically more so in women. Cyra has to find ways to act and react despite the constant pain she endures. That pain has made her into a stronger individual, therefore able to withstand every curveball that has been thrown at her. Cyra goes through some traumatic things at the hands of her brother, and I believe Veronica Roth intended to portray Cyra as someone who can handle it because of her endurance of daily chronic pain. Once again, I feel that people were critiquing something and forming assumptions based on a misconception of Roth's ideas and intentions. Cyra is indeed tough, even admirable, and while her chronic pain has shaped her into this fierce individual, no way does it define her. Roth clearly makes a point of this when she has Akos tell Cyra she can be more than just her pain. I don't understand how people could totally misread these two elements of Roth's book and furthermore rate it 1-2 stars, but now that I have debunked these "critiques", let's move on.Roth's characters were dynamic, diverse, and intense. Each one had a distinct voice and none of her characters were cookie cutter. I loved the balance between the build up and the climax of the story. We get a perfect blend of character and world building, and also some very great action scenes. Roth did an amazing job at describing the cultures of her world, and while some people have also critiqued that her world isn't realistic and that some of it doesn't follow the laws of science (i.e. a planet full of mainly water yet inhabitable), at the end of the day it's fiction.Carve the Mark is gritty, dark, and encompasses all the elements that make a book fantastic. Characters that deal with issues that are relatable to the reader, a romance that is organic and stays true to characters involved, and a spell-binding story about a galaxy of people that are divided and on the brink of war. If you love Science fiction with some dystopian elements sprinkled on top, this book is DEFINITELY for you.Happy Reading!!!!!

It was a good book. I thought the two main characters were compelling and you rooted for them. The one thing that irritated me is this is obviously going to be a series and it ended in a way that left many unanswered questions. I am old and remember books like Gone With The Wind where the book may be long but the story was contained in one book. It feels cheap to me to write books to encourage sequels. But obviously this my thing considering the most popular books these days are series.

The story was interesting and the powers the characters had were unique. I liked the idea that it took place in outer space and other planets.Unfortunately, it wasn't as good as I had expected. It was pretty fast paced. Too many characters were introduced so I couldn't feel for the main characters. Some characters were introduced and then only had small, almost irrelevant, parts. I tried to visualized the world they lived in and found it difficult because I felt as though there were pieces of Dune by Frank Herbert and then Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. Every time I came across the word "Benesit " the name/title of one of the families, I kept wanting to say "Bene Gesserit" from Dune.As for the relationship between the two main characters, I felt very little for them. As mentioned, because it was so fast paced and so much information was being thrown in, I really couldn't relate to the relationship or to their situation. What was very obvious was the pain the protagonist felt and how she learned to deal with it. I think if the focus was solely on this as the story, how she was chosen to have this type of power that would cause herself pain, and how she learned to control or manage it, would have been a great story on its own.I really wanted to like this story. I love sci-fi and fantasy combined. I did enjoy Roth's writing and how easily one scene merged into the next. I wasn't sure if I'd like the first person view from the protagonist and then the 3rd person view from the second main character, but Roth did it well.

Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth involves two peoples that have different beliefs and are enemies. Cyra ends up relying on and becoming friends with the enemy after he, Akos, is captured and forced into serving Cyra. Her brother thrives on hurting others and uses Cyra to accomplish this. Ryzek uses Cyra for everything he wants to gain through fear and intimidation. He wants to conquer all. Cyra and her servant Akos grow a friendship with trust and honesty which gives Cyra something she's never experienced before. Her family has always been manipulative and cruel. Cyra and Akos are captured and the wound Ryzek gives Cyra made me physically sick. Revenge is all that Cyra wants against Ryzek because of every harm he has ever inflicted on her. This first book in the Carve the Mark duology builds the world setting and the character's backgrounds and ends with an unfinished rebellion, leaving me ready for the sequel. 4 stars for this science fiction fantasy.

After reading about one-third of this book and realizing I just didn't care about any of the characters, I quit reading it. Very disappointing.

The book was entertaining, suspenseful, and intriguing. The characters were full and richly developed. The settings were perfectly described. What I missed were the clever ways Roth wove language into the story tapestry. In the Divergent series the language used allowed for multiple interpretations that were revealed as correct or not as the plot unfolded, chapter by chapter. That same flair for language and nuance for meaning was missing in this book. I enjoyed every page, but I missed the challenge of her artful use of language.

Only a little ways into this and am blown away so far. I've never read a book with Hindu mythology before, so this is new and unique to me. It has all the things I love about a Rick Riordan book while teaching me about a culture I know very little about. Cannot wait to see where this series goes!!

It took me a bit to get into this book. I was expecting the quick dive in I am used to with Rick Riordan's books, since this is part of his imprint. The main character (or heroine, as she would prefer) is deeply flawed. Which, in the end makes for some really interesting character growth opportunities. She is almost a pathological liar at the beginning of the book. She has good reasons for it, which a lot of kids her age can probably relate to. I never lied on that scale, but I can really sympathize with her. She has an almost resentful relationship with her mother, who is always away on business trips and always forgetting things that are important to Aru. Aru also has a difficult time connecting with the kids in her school--the lies are her shield from what she thinks is inevitable mockery. Ultimately, Aru really wants to fit in, but because she doesn't think she will she choose to lie about why she doesn't fit in.This leads to her making a very poor choice and awakening a demon who is bent on destroying the world. She's thrown on a quest (While in her Spiderman pjs) to save the world and her only help is another girl her age, Mini, who is afraid that everything is going to kill her in some way and a talking pigeon. Its a fun story and pulls in the colorful world of Indian mythology really well. I also REALLY loved having girl characters driving the narrative.I will be looking forward to checking out the next book.

“Aru Shah and the End of Time” is one of the first novels published by Rick Riordan’s new imprint Rick Riordan Presents. Following the same style of Mr. Riordan’s Percy Jackson novels, Aru Shah is about a young girl who finds out she is the reincarnation of one of the Pandava brothers after a series of unfortunate events (she tried to impress some popular kids and then well…the end of time began). Roshani Chokshi introduces the reader a rich world of Indian mythology, which turns out is much more wild and colorful than Greek/Roman mythology. In this middle-grade novel, Ms. Chokshi takes us in an unforgettable adventure that will make you wish you had your own glowing ball of crazy magic.Aru Shah is the first story I have read by Ms. Chokshi, and I'm impressed. Ms. Chokshi is a flowery writer. And I don’t mean that in the way that she writes nonsense, but that her prose is like a garden of flowers — beautiful, delicate, fierce, colorful and wonderful to all the senses. She blends modernity and mythology so effortlessly I would sometimes forget that we do not live in Aru’s world.Speaking of Aru, the main protagonist of this little adventure, she is amazing. Aru reminded me of me, a young girl with a wild imagination and no real friends to share it with. Unlike me, Aru had spark and strength to go do what is right even when it is wrong, but most importantly she would stand up for herself with no fear (even though there is much to fear).Aru’s character grows throughout the novel is something I wish upon everyone that age, finding their inner strength to acknowledge your fault/weaknesses and use them to your advantage to save the world from ending. Even though she is only 12 years old, Aru is a character that any person of any age can appreciate, love and see themselves in.Aru’s world is filled with interesting and fleshed out characters who will win your heart. Like Boo, Mini, the palace, and Chitrigupta (just to name a few). Each one of the characters felt independent with their own little quirks. You’ll cheer for them and wish to protect them. Yes, even the palace. This story is about adventure, friendship, family, sisterhood, trying not to die, but most importantly it is about self-acceptance.I look forward to Aru’s next adventure in Aru Shah and the Song of Death. WHICH BY THE WAY!!! There is a boy on the cover!!! *eyebrow wiggles*

My 11 year old son loves for me to read to him each night. I bought this book on the recommendation of a young girl who attends the same music school as him.I've been reading one chapter each night and each chapter is fantastic. It is a delight for me to read and a real struggle to not finish reading the entire book by myself (that's against our rules). Listening to him laugh in response to Aru's dry wit or Mini's concerns is great. If your kid/s enjoys Harry Potter or Rick Riodan novels, they will LOVE this book. It's funny and delightful. The descriptions of the world are amazing and vivid. Kids around age 11 will love Aru's voice. Mini will be someone they instantly sympathize with because she is adorable. Also because the characters they encounter and places they go are often based on Hindu mythology (rather than Greek/Roman/Norse mythology that proliferate most western children's literature) everything feels fresh and new! Especially to the adult reading the book aloud to their child! We can't wait for a sequel!

Wow, what wonderfully hilarious adventure. It hits all the right humor, adventure and mythology buttons for fans of Rick Riordan but still is very much its own story, too.My daughter read the book first and then wanted us to read it aloud, together--that's how much she liked it. She's a huge fan of fantasy/magic series like Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, Keeper of the Lost Cities, all of which have female secondary characters. But this book was especially a hit, and I can't help guessing that it's because the story features Aru and Mini, two quirky, fun daughters of Pandavas. It's sort of like when Wonder Woman got her own story, after years of male superheros. Highly recommend.

We love this series of books and have them for most of our current cameras (we are waiting for the one covering the Canon 7D II, but have them for our Canon 70D, Canon 6D and Canon SL1 - wish they had one for the Fujifilm X100S/T). They are small enough to carry with you but contain enough information and are easy enough to access when you hit that "how do I do that" question. Comprehensive and accurate, we love them. They tend to be difficult to get because they are printed/published in the UK, but they are worth the wait. Suitable for people that are somewhat familiar with photography and photographic principals, they are not beginners guides, more a guide for the more experienced photographer on how to get the most out of their new camera. Thoroughly recommended.

Wish I could remember 10% of the clearly written and illustrated information - heck even 5% :)

I am finding this book very helpful. I lost my instruction manual and didn't know which of the books to buy that would explain even more than the camera manual. This book is easy to understand and goes into detail beyond the basics

A great instruction book for beginners. Covers all areas for the Canon Rebel SL1 camera.

If you have this camera this is a good book of information, more than in the camera manual.

Separation of Church and State

Review

Philip Hamburger has, simply, produced the best and most important book ever written on the subject of the separation of church and state in the United States. He has laid to rest the historical credentials of the Jeffersonian myth of the "wall of separation," and shown how the notion of separation gained wide acceptance in the nineteenth century primarily due to the pervasiveness of American anti-Catholicism. He has also destroyed the notion that separation is the only alternative to the union of church and state, and demonstrated that acceptance of separation has in fact undermined the vitality of our original anti-establishment notions of religious freedom. Hamburger underplays the current constitutional implications of his historical arguments, but it is clear that this book will have a profound impact on the current law and politics of church and state. (Stanley N. Katz, Princeton University, President, Emeritus, American Council of Learned Societies)This richly documented and cogently argued book challenges conventional interpretations of separation of church and state as a constitutional standard in American history and promises to reshape the debate on the constitutional and prudential relations between religion and American public life. (Daniel L. Dreisbach, American University)Hamburger provides an alternate historical and political understanding concerning the development of the separation concept, relying on 17th-through 19th-century religious arguments and social patterns to challenge our accepted understanding of relationships between church and state...This clear historical analysis will be accessible to anyone interested in U.S. church-state relations and civil liberties. Highly recommended. (Steven Puro Library Journal 2002-05-15)This volume presents the fascinating and complex history of interpretations of the First Amendment in the U.S. and argues that the amendment's antiestablishment clause did not mandate separation of church and state. Instead, Hamburger insists that separation, an idea that may mean far more than the absence of establishment, became a constitutional freedom over an extended period of time, largely through fear and prejudice...Recommended. (S. C. Pearson Choice 2002-12-01)Hamburger has written an extremely important book. His prodigious learning and ingenious interpretations overturn the conventional wisdom, forcing even the most passionate defenders of separationism to recognize how much of the story of religious liberty has taken on mythical dimensions. (Alan Wolfe Books and Culture 2002-09-01)[Hamburger] devastates Jefferson's notion of a 'wall of separation' between religion and government, demonstrating that such a notion was utterly idiosyncratic at the time. Strict separation was revived by anti-Catholics in the 19th century and picked up by the court in the 20th, a development for which Justice Hugo Black bore much responsibility. The modern era of judicial hostility to organized religion and its symbols in the public square is directly contrary to what the Framers meant when they prohibited the establishment of religion. Though Mr. Hamburger does not trace the damage done by preposterous decisions in recent decades, this is a marvelous book. (Robert Bork Wall Street Journal 2006-01-14)Separation of Church and State by Philip Hamburger is, perhaps, the most talked about treatise on American church-state relations of the last generation. It is a weighty, thoroughly researched tome that presents a nuanced, provocative thesis and that strikes even seasoned church-state scholars as distinctive from most works on the subject...Hamburger's fresh appraisal of the historical record adds much to our understanding of church-state separation...Few pages in this richly documented and cogently argued book fail to excite reflection or challenge long-held assumptions. (Daniel Dreisbach American Journal of Legal History)

This book is the most important contribution to the discussion of church and state in America during the last 100 years. The author "demythologizes" the subject. His most startling insight is the distinction he draws between "separation" and "disestablishment."So significant is this work I would contend that the study of church and state should be distinguished as "pre-Hamburger" and "post-Hamburger."It gives new meaning to the term "must read."

Book confirms much of what I have read in other sources. Bravo to Mr. Hamburger.

Separation of Church and State The author, Philip Hamburger, offers a well balanced presentation of how sixteen words of the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States can be deliberately misconstrued for purposes that its writers never intended and how ten words written by Thomas Jefferson in a letter could become a substitute for those sixteen. Take the words themselves "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof...". Now, put them next to "...thus building a wall of separation between Church and State". It is no less than amazing how this transformation could have happened. As the saying goes, "Throw enough mud against a wall, some will stick". Of course if there never was a wall, if one throws enough mud, it will make its own wall!We are all children of our own culture. When we hear things repeated again and again by people we love and respect, we will seldom question their veracity. Ideas get passed on from generaton to generation. They may change, but they do so slowly and the change is seldom noticed until the idea is totally transformed. That is what happened to our understanding as Americans of this part of the First Amendment. Going back to the beginning, as Hamburger does, makes a huge difference in our understanding. The book is great reading. Maybe it should be compulsory reading by all of our judges, especially those on the Supreme Court.

as described

Very informative!

Hamburger's book seems overly thorough in making extended analyses of the many major elements of the Church/State history of America. In many cases there was little risk that a critic would argue the points that he made, and made, and remade. Sometimes less is more.In general, he makes a persuasive presentation of what happened and the causes therof. A+ on technical data, less so on making his points succinctly.

Constitutional legal scholar Philip Hamburger, formerly a professor of law at the University of Chicago and currently professor of law at Columbia Law School, argues in "Separation of Church and State" that America's modern conception of the First Amendment's Establishment Clause has failed to make an adequate distinction between the establishment of religion, which the founders intended to prohibit, and the "separation of church and state," a later development that was almost never cited by eighteenth century Americans. Hamburger offers both academic and non-academic readers alike a thoroughly researched and engaging presentation of the history of the Establishment Clause and how it came to be misapplied to the detriment of religion in the American public square. How did the nation depart from a Constitution that guaranteed religious liberty to erect a "wall of separation between church and state"? Hamburger traces the problem to Thomas Jefferson, who in 1802 in his Letter to the Danbury Baptist Association reflected on "that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should `make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between Church & State.'" Jefferson's phrase would later be adopted by the Supreme Court. Justice Black, writing for the majority of the Supreme Court in Everson v. Board of Education of Ewing (1947), adopted Jefferson's separation of church and state and made it "the foundation of subsequent establishment clause jurisprudence." Five years later, Justice Douglas in Zorach v. Clauson (1952), affirmed Black's basic principle but expressed concern over the extent to which its implications could be taken. Although the separation of church and state must be complete, the First Amendment did "not say that in every and all respects there shall be a separation of Church and State," for if this were the case, municipalities would even be prohibited from providing police services to churches or other religious groups.Yet things would soon change. Within the context of private, religious schools, Chief Justice Burger writing for the majority in Lemon v. Kurtzman (1971), held that statutes could only provide funding for religious schools when the following elements were met: "First, the statute must have a secular legislative purpose; second, its principal or primary effect must be one that neither advances nor inhibits religion ... finally, the statute must not foster `an excessive government entanglement with religion.'" Applying these elements, the Court struck down a Pennsylvania and Rhode Island statutes that provided aid to non-public schools, including church-related schools. The Court would go further, excluding religion in public schools in Wallace v. Jaffree (1985) (Stevens, J.), nativity scenes in Allegheny County v. Greater Pittsburgh ACLU (1989) (Blackmun, J.), and prayer at a graduation ceremony in Lee v. Weisman (1992) (Kennedy, J.). Throughout this chaos, the dissents of Justices Rehnquist and Scalia often fell on deaf ears. As Rehnquist articulated in Wallace, the separation standard lacked historical support and "proved all but useless as a guide to sound constitutional adjudication."Hamburger concludes by highlighting the fact that the original opponents of the government establishment of religion did not demand a complete separation between church and state; although they opposed governmental financial benefits to established churches, they typically did not reject the conventional view that "there was a necessary and valuable moral connection between religion and government." Today, however, the opponents of establishment have taken us to a different place, where the mere hint of government endorsement of religion is viewed as contrary to the constitution. The nation thus finds itself in a place where the very religious liberty that the U.S. Constitution was designed to protect has instead become undermined.

Mary: A Catholic-Evangelical Debate, by Dwight Longenecker

Review

"This book is evidence of a new Marian apparition--her appearance in recent Evangelical-Roman Catholic dialogues. When it comes to Mary, there is much that we agree on, and much about which we still remain divided. This winsome but tough-minded discussion helps us to sort through those distinctions and thus contributes to the kind of healthy ecumenism we need more of."--Timothy George, Beeson Divinity School, Samford University "There is simply no other book in print that explores this most immovable impasse between Protestants and Catholics in a way that both uncompromising Evangelicals like J. I. Packer and uncompromising Catholics like Richard John Neuhaus can wholly applaud. Clear, honest, mutually respectful, uncompromising, and illuminating!"--Peter Kreeft, Boston College "Eavesdropping on this conversation is a real treat and, of course, more than that--a serious exchange in which crucial theological questions and deep personal piety become tightly intertwined. As the authors themselves evince, a lot more is at stake than personal preferences and devotional sensibilities. Without either diminishing the differences or resorting to caricature, the conversation in both tone and substance is a salutary model."--Michael Horton, president of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals "Every time I have heard Protestants and Catholics talk about Mary, they have started fighting, complete with name-calling and door-slamming. The Catholic Longenecker and the Protestant Gustafson both assert their positions with every argument and fact they can find, but they do not fight even when they radically disagree. The result is a truly illuminating book and a serious theological study that is (oh rare event) quite fun to read."--David Mills, Touchstone "This debate is lively and full of challenge; it is also a dialogue, an interaction between friends, not a polemic, and it could serve as a model for ecumenical work. With a wealth of solid theological information, it throws much light on Mary's role in God's plan and in the life of Christians. Readers will be stimulated by its honesty and fraternal spirit and, one hopes, come to know Mary better. Both Catholics and Evangelicals will learn much from this book."--Francis Cardinal George, Archbishop of Chicago

Events such as the recent Lutheran - Catholic declaration on justification are testaments to the growing ecumenicalism within the Christianity community. Despite progress in this area differences remain on several issues, such as the relationship between scripture, tradition and church. While not a core theological issue, arguably, the single largest stumbling block between rank and file believers is the role of the Virgin Mary; Catholics feeling that Protestant undervalue her role and Protestants contending that much Marian dogma is unfounded.Though the role of the Virgin Mary is an interesting question, prior to coming across this book, I had been unable to find a resource that engaged the issue in what I considered to be a balanced, critical and comprehensive manner; much of the Protestant material in this area being either superficial or overly polemical (e.g. Rhodes, White, McCarthy etc.), whereas Catholic material was either extremely terse (e.g. Catholic Encyclopedia) or devotional. While this book has too much strength three aspects that I found particularly helpful were its respectful tone, its explanation of Catholic terminology and the discussion of recent Marian dogmas within the Catholic Church. First, with respect to tone, discussion of the Virgin Mary can be a sensitive issue and if one is not careful such discussions can rapidly escalate into shrill emotionally charged exchanges. Hence, I was impressed by the authors' tone. While arguing forcefully and disagreeing in several areas they maintained a civil and respectful dialogue, engaging with each other rather than just talking past each other in an attempt to score debating points.Second, with respect to terminology, often misunderstanding or assumptions regarding language contribute to disagreement. Such terminological misunderstanding is especially acute in theological discourse, in the present case Catholic terminology surrounding Mary sounds foreign, and excessive, to many modern Protestant readers. While not removing all disagreement in this area Longenecker's explication of terms like mediatrix and co-redeemer are helpful in reducing some extreme interpretations and misunderstandings. Finally, the dialogue highlighted the connections or potential connections between The Catholic Church's understanding of alleged Marian apparitions and recent Marian dogmas. It had always struck me as odd why now, after all these centuries the Catholic Church decided to formalize the Immaculate Conception and the Assumption. After reading this discussion it strikes me that there is significant connection between these dogmas and beliefs concerning Marian apparitions. It is a subject I would be interested in pursuing further.Overall this is an excellent book that I highly recommend for anyone interested in the subject of the Virgin Mary. I am hopeful that similar books on issues such as papal infallibility are either available or forthcoming..

THIS WAS A GIFT SO I DO NOT KNOW

This book gives you both sides of the debate on the extent of honor due to Mary in the Christian Church. Longenecker and his debater went to college together but met again years later, after Longenecker had become a Catholic. Discussions progressed and eventually gravitated to this discussion on Mary. Longenecker presents and then defends the actual teaching of the Church on honoring Mary (as opposed to the stereotype other Christians think the Church teaches). The opponent asks the hard questions and conducts a well thought out debate. Whichever side of the debate you are on, this book would be an asset to your library.

This book is excellent and honest. There is no relativism here. This is a serious conversation/debate between committed christians, who are honestly trying to discern Christ's will for their lives and the church.Authors Dwight Longnecker and David Gustafson go head to head on Mary on these pages. Longnecker, a convert to Catholicism, defends Catholic doctrine articulately in the face of a very competent challenge from Gustafson. This book, which comes out of ECT (Evangelicals and Catholics Together) is a clear example of the search for truth via serious dialog and debate. While I felt Longnecker was a little too gentle in places, and gave some unnecessary ground, in general I thought it was a "gloves off" but deeply civil discussion between two christians.I must admit that this book surprised me. As an orthodox Catholic I find the thought of the Catholic church being "together" with evangelicals problematic. We are dealing with a group of people who count bigots like Dave Hunt and Tim LaHaye as part of their membership. It can be argued that they butcher the gospel by dividing it up and placing an unhealthy and ahistorical emphasis on the book of revelation, placing it ahead of the gospels and the ministry of Jesus Christ. We are talking about people who vehemently opposed having a Catholic priest chaplain of the House of Representatives. Catholics need to always remember that Norman Vincent Peale told evangelicals that they could not vote for JFK because he was Catholic. They are now doing the same thing to a mormon presidential candidate I won't mention by name. It is clear therefore that these people's theology makes learning from their past mistakes difficult. Evangelicals deny the sacraments Christ himself founded. They rip people away from historic christianity without even a pause or a semblance of humility in the name of evangelization, even though they have no claim to apostolic authority. The list of abuses goes on and on.But I note that evangelicals who are as conservatively protestant as I am Catholic list the same set of concerns about Evangelicals and Catholics Together, albeit filtered through the lens of their own ideology. When I see this, I remind myself of the call to unity in the gospels. It is a struggle, but I remind myself that many evangelicals are honest and sincere Christians who believe what it is that they say: Hunt, Chick, and others notwithstanding. While the Catholic church must continue to proclaim the truth, we must not forget the emphasis that Jesus places on love for our brethren.A good challenging book. Highly recommended.

I went to the authors' alma mater, and like them, took a different path. BJU was anti-Catholic, but these two grads--an Episcopal Federal Judge and Catholic Priest (living near the campus)--are allies, not enemies. The Reformation is long past, and we Protestants have largely discovered that what unites us in Christ is greater than that which divides us (minor doctrines). That being said, there is considerable difference of opinion about Mary, and I confess I've never read a book devoted (pun intended) to her. The title says "debate" but it is more of a cordial dialogue between two good friends. I found myself thinking that, even though I don't agree with the Catholic position for the most part, their claims are not egregious, and in many cases, once clarified, they don't sound as bad as I'd thought. This is a substantive, extremely well written book that will make you think. I found a copy at a seminary library and had to have my own copy. This book needs to stay in print! Anyone interested in studying Catholic/Protestant differences will benefit from this outstanding discussion.

From the Inside Flap

Filled with lyrical, exotic prose and nostalgia for Rudyard Kipling's native India, "Kim is widely acknowledged as the author's greatest novel and a key element in his winning the 1907 Nobel Prize in Literature. It is the tale of an orphaned sahib and the burdensome fate that awaits him when he is unwittingly dragged into the Great Game of Imperialism. During his many adventures, he befriends a sage old Tibetan lama who transforms his life. As Pankaj Mishra asserts in his Introduction, "To read the novel now is to notice the melancholy wisdom that accompanies the native boy's journey through a broad and open road to the narrow duties of the white man's world: how the deeper Buddhist idea of the illusion of the self, of time and space, makes bearable for him the anguish of abandoning his childhood."

This is a profound story of love, the search for self, and the resulting spiritual growth of the principal characters. Adventure, and intrigue are laced with humor. The major characters develop through their open hearted commitment to Kim. Don't expect to read it just one time, but prepare to add it to your list of favorites.

I read Christopher Hitchens's review of Rudyard Kipling in his book Love, Poverty, and War: Journeys and Essays, and I decided to go to the source. Kipling's portrayal of the characters are entirely multi-dimensional, making them relatable in our commonality but we can fully understand their intentions with the character development we are provided. The dialogue, if one is unfamiliar with the dialect, slang, and 19th century British English, can be difficult to follow upon first passing, but the story-line is very easy to follow. I would not compare this to contemporary literature as it is simply too different to the current literary style, different literary objectives and exposition, and very different contemporary (19th century Indian-British English) dialogue. However, if you want to get an understanding of Rudyard Kipling's writing, if you want to see the relationship as described by a contemporary of the Indian colony and its colonizers, or simply want to enjoy a well written story from late 19th century British literature, this book will not disappoint.

This was at first glance a book about a boy. A very resourceful boy, at that. Who as the story opens shows us that he has conquered the childhood games with his cleverness and recognition of the importance of symbolic acts. He meets the spirit guide of the next stages of his life in the lama. Together they take the "long walk" of the Grand Trunk, an ancient road from Calcutta to Kabul. This river of people becomes a character in the narrative by itself. It sweeps them to their separate visions, the old man lama's of a river where he will be renewed and the boy's search for the red bull in the green field.Kim is taken into the custody of his father's old regiment, forcing him to realize his status as a sahib. He takes this arrangement in stride partly because he is curious and willing to learn what the whites have to offer but also he knows and proves that he can leave when he wills to. What he learns is the elements and tricks of The Game, a term even in the 19th century for the espionage business. With the lama who is still searching for his river, Kim travels into the mountains north and west of the Punjab were they encounter rival spies working for the Russians who have a State interest in Afghanistan and India. Both Kim and the lama come to harm; Kim takes responsibility for the old man's health and safety and brings him to a friend's home off the mountains where they both can heal. Before the story closes, both recognize they have found what they are searching for and found each other too

Kim is a splendid novel by Rudyard Kipling. It's well worth a read. The problem is that there are a lot of Kindle versions of `Kim' available at the Kindle store. Lots of them are terrible. A very few are good. Unfortunately, the reviews for Kim are amalgamated into one big group of reviews, and so finding the best one to buy is difficult - near impossible. And so I make this review. Well -- and I do have an edition available for the Kindle myself.Since I first made my review of kindle editions of Kim back in 2010, many new editions of Kim for the Kindle have appeared, and many of the old (terrible) ones have vanished from the Amazon catalogue. So I'm updating this review, with information on all the editions of Kim that have appeared since I last updated the review, and I've removed the notes on all those that are no longer available. This review was last updated in April 2013This review comments on each edition I've found, with a live link to the reviewed edition for the good editions and the honourable mentions. I can't link to all of the editions, because of a limit on the number of product links allowed in a review. However, I have given the ASIN for the other editions.First, the ones that have a good quality of text and formatting. All of these have proper typographic quotes and dashes, and italic text where they should. They also have reasonable or good paragraph formatting.Kim (Penguin Modern Classics)ePenguinAn excellent version of the text. Occasional typos, probably only a few more than in the printed book. The footnotes are hyperlinked both ways, so they're easy to follow. This edition also comes with an introductory essay, but opens to that, rather than the start of the actual text of Kim.This text is based on the revised text of the American 1941 Burwash edition, itself based on the English 1937-1939 Sussex edition. It therefore contains a few American spellings - chiefly of words that that take an 's' in British English and a 'z' in American English.$2.99 (list: $11.49)Kim (Penguin Classics)PenguinA nicely formatted edition with lots of extras. Indeed, so many extras that I can't comment on the text, as the sample doesn't actually get to the text itself. Hopefully based on the same clean text as the ePenguin edition ASIN B002RI9KQ8. No illustrations as far as I can tell.$2.99 (list: $11.49)Kim (Puffin Classics)Puffin: B004WNA9BQA nice introduction by Susan Cooper and the text is well formatted, and seems very clean - it even has the correct u with macron character. There don't seem to be any extras except for the introduction - no annotations, no illustrations. This is a good, plain (if overpriced) edition, but nothing really to recommend it.$3.96 (list: $8.93)Kim (Vintage Classics)Vintage DigitalA very clean copy of the text. I only found two definite typo in the sample text (Kutu instead of Kulu, and Oh instead of Ohé). It's also very nicely formatted, with good formatting of chapter starts and paragraphs. Italics, curly quotes and proper dashes, of course. No real extras - a paragraph or two about Kipling is all, really. No illustrations or annotations.$4.99 (list: $13.34)Kim (Modern Library Classics)Modern LibraryA first line indent and no spacing between paragraphs. But poor formatting fo the chapter starts. It has superscript numbers in the text that refer to a glossary at the end, but the superscripts are not hyperlinked. There is an introduction, and a map illustration. This text is based on the original 1901 version.$5.99Kim: Illustrated by J. Lockwood KiplingDurrant PublishingI believe that this is the cleanest version of the text available, i.e. with the fewest typos. It follows the Sussex edition rather than the American Burwash version as the ePenguin version does. So British spelling throughout. Hyperlinks (both ways) are used for the definitions of foreign and strange words - all of Kipling's definitions and lots more. The illustrations by Kipling's father are included at appropriate points in the text. There are ten illustrations altogether, and the cover image is a detail from one of them. The illustrations are just (April 2013) been updated to a higher resolution (768x1024)No essay about the text though. And the Penguin editions have more footnotes, I think. As you have probably guessed: this is my edition!$0.99Next, some honourable mentions. These are better than most, but still with various flaws:Kim by Rudyard Kipling - Full Version (Annotated) (Literary Classics Collection)G BooksIntroductory notes and a general timeline of Kipling's era, and a few other extras, but no illustrations. Proper quotes, italics, dashes, but often open quotes are used for closed quotes or apostrophes, and closed quotes for open quotes. The unusual character u with macron is included as an image rather than as a character, and so does not scale with the other letters. Occasional OCR errors (e.g. zero for capital O) and incorrect extra paragraph breaks. The footnotes in the introduction are not hyperlinked. The footnotes/glossary entries in the main text of the book (of which there are a large number) are hyperlinked, with link numbers rather than linking directly from the word. A nicely linked table of contents. The text gives a blank line between each paragraph, as well as indenting the first line, and some of the extras could be formatted a little better.$2.99Collins Classics - KimHarperPressThis has quite a nice text, although based on an early edition, without the later minor changes that Kipling made. There are some odd errors in it: A space in the middle of a word (ador ation), extra characters at the end of a word (trunnionsbu) and occasionally an open quote that should be an apostrophe (``Tis).Having said that, it does have italics and typographic quotes and proper dashes. It even has the correct u with macron character. Paragraphs all have a first line indent, even the first in a chapter. But the chapter verses and verse in the text is nicely done. According to the table of contents, it has some extras at the end, but no illustrations, and no extra annotations that I could see. Not too bad an edition, if it wasn't for the weird typos.$0.99Kim (Dover Thrift Editions)Dover PublicationsA brief introductory note, but no illustrations. Proper quotes, italics, dashes. The unusual character u with macron is included as an image rather than as a character, and so does not scale with the other letters. No extra annotations. A nicely linked table of contents. The text gives a small space between each paragraph, as well as indenting the first line. The verse formatting is quite good.$2.99And now for all the others. Since I first wrote this review, Amazon has, thankfully, deleted many of these editions. But, alas, several more have been added. For all these, I downloaded the sample, and compared against both a printed copy and my edition. Not that it usually took very long. While there are variations among them, they're almost all quick conversions of whatever was the latest text at Project Gutenberg when the Kindle book was made. I can't recommend any of these versions, not even the free ones.
