I saw the author on BookTV, presenting results of her research into the origins of the justice system in the USA, and purchased the book. I found it interesting to see the extent to which policing was constructed to control black people on slave plantations. For several years I had been fascinated by the numerous law and order, crime investigation dramas and had become fairly familiar with law enforcement jargon, but I learned through the Shipp book that the most popular terms came out of tactics the controllers used for keeping the slaves on the plantations and for retrieving those who left (ran away). For example, surveillance started as a way to find out what slaves were planning.

This is a book that every mother, father, grandfather, grandmother and guardian of a Black child and especially a Black Male should read and impart to their charges.Our great grands used to teach us how to approach and interact with Whites. If you saw the movie the Help; as Minnie as sending her daughter off to work for the first time she gives her strict instructions on protocol in dealing with Whites. At one time that was standard operating procedure for ever Black child especially those raised in the south.Unfortunately we have to sit our Black children down and provide a strict protocol on how to interact with the police. This is to insure first of all that they come home safe, and second that they do or say nothing to incriminate or indict themselves.Please give this book to some Black youth(s) in your life it could save their life.

Reading "A Death in Canaan" in the 1970s raised in me a long lasting fear for my children and for all teens and their treatment by the justice system. Now in 2014, along comes Robbin Shipp writing about her experience defending black teens today in GA. I am sorry there is a need for this book and I recommend it as a handbook for black teens and their parents and all who would like a glimpse into the current day "feeding" system of justice.

This book does an excellent job at examining the history of African-Americans and law enforcement. Reading this book has been an enlightening experience, offering real advice and guidelines for dealing with traffic stops and even being stopped on foot. I'm sure this book will not only save lives but some careers as well.

Reminds me of another book which digs a bit deeper into how the whole systems works especially from the standpoint of the Prosecutor's Office - Arbitrary Justice. This book does give guidance on how you should handle the whole cluster of being mixed up in the Criminal Justice System.

Good reading!

Very good edition!

This is yet another Loeb book where I have shamefully lost the companion volume! This is volume II of the 'Lives of Eminent Philosophers' and it has, among many others, sections on Pythagoras, Parmenides, Heraclitus, Zeno, Epicurus and Diogenes - this last is the philosopher-cynic, not our author Diogenes Laertius, who is really little more than a sophisticated gossip. But actually, that is more than a little harsh, this collection of anecdotes is not only fun but it gives us information that is often only mentioned by our author, D. Laertius. Unfortunately, without confirmation, much of what he testifies to is either not accepted or, at the very least, open to question. But for those of us interested in the philosophers, and the relations between them and their ways of philosophizing, this book really is both educational and entertaining.For instance, on Diogenes (the philosopher-cynic, not our author, the gossip) we read, "Being reproached with begging when Plato did not beg, 'Oh yes,' says he [that is, Diogenes the Philosopher says] 'he does, but when he does so -He holds his head down close, that none may hear.'" It seems that many of the first generation of 'Socratics' were contemptuous of what might be best described as Plato's (ahem) 'kowtowing' to popular opinion. 'Begging' here means (probably) Plato's attempt to influence the City and its Nomos. For many of the other Socratics there was on the one hand Philosophy and there was on the other hand Law (Nomos) and never the two shall meet. But Plato, through his cautious writing, intends to 'influence' the City in order to make it more philosophical - or, at the very least, more friendly to philosophy. Recall that Kojeve once remarked (something to the effect) that once Socrates set foot and began speaking in the marketplace modernity itself becomes inevitable. We always need to add that this supposed 'inevitability' vanishes entirely if Plato chose to live like the philosopher Diogenes did...But the squabbles and banter between the Socratics Diogenes and Plato can be quite interesting:"Others tell us that what Diogenes said was, 'I trample upon the pride of Plato,' who retorted, 'Yes Diogenes, with pride of another sort'."To Plato, who had given him more than he asked, Diogenes said, "So, it seems, you neither give as you are asked nor answer as you are questioned.""As Plato was conversing about Ideas using the nouns 'tablehood' and 'cuphood,' he said, 'Table and cup I see; but your tablehood and cuphood, Plato, I can nowise see.' 'That's readily accounted for,' said Plato, 'for you have the eyes to see the visible table and cup; but not the understanding by which ideal tablehood and cuphood are discerned'."So we see that Diogenes is not ready to follow Plato into his Ideal world. Diogenes questions, as he did obliquely in our first quote above, the 'honesty' of Plato. It seems that Plato is 'purposefully' unclear. And keep in mind that it isn't only Diogenes who thinks so. Epicurus goes so far as to refer to Plato's school as 'the toadies of Dionysius'!Nietzsche has a wonderful comment on this remark of Epicurus that might be apposite here:How malicious philosophers can be! I know of nothing more venomous than the joke Epicurus permitted himself against Plato and the Platonists; he called them Dionysiokolakes. That means literally - and this is the foreground meaning -"flatterers of Dionysius," in other words, tyrant's baggage and lickspittles; but addition to this he also wants to say, "they are all actors, there is nothing genuine about them" (for Dionysiokolax was a popular name for an actor). And the latter is really the malice that Epicurus aimed at Plato: he was peeved by the grandiose manner, the mise en scene at which Plato and his disciples were so expert - at which Epicurus was not an expert - he, that old schoolmaster from Samos who sat, hidden away, in his little garden at Athens and wrote three hundred books - who knows? perhaps from rage and ambition against Plato? It took a hundred years until Greece found out who this garden god, Epicurus, had been - did they find out? (Beyond Good & Evil, Section 7)So you see, the 'malicious' little joke by Epicurus that D. Laertius mentions in his 'Lives' (and the pride that aimed the remark) were worth a comment by a philosopher of the stature of Nietzsche. The joke, btw, is that Plato flattered the powerful by 'acting' (i.e., writing) in a manner they would consider both flattering and wise; and thus, hopefully, influencing the behavior of the powerful by the wise. It is in this manner that the few dozen dialogues of Plato began a tendency in Philosophy that results in, as Kojeve said, our 'enlightened' modernity.You see what clues are available even in the gossip that has grown up around the philosophers! One stands in awe of how different the world would be if Plato had followed Diogenes and lived like a dog...

As an educator, I have recommended this book to everyone. It is so important to consider what each of us brings into a conversation about; our children and their education; parent/teacher relationships; and conducting classrooms where everyone is included!

This book promotes the idea that teachers and parents should be in a relationship based on the well being of the child. Leaving open the idea that it is up to each individual teacher to create the most effective way for the communication to develop. Great suggestions and some basic core principles about how to establish healthy connections with parents.

It was good to see he got to promise his wife’s wishes and buried his daughter, but sadly his second wife died and he had two lots of ashes to pick up on the same day.The other stories are just as intriguing as Necrosearch finds more cold case bodies and meet the police who just could not let the case close even after years of toil it may take on their families and their health. The book is well written and holds the reader’s attention from page to page. A must read book for all true crime readers up there with Ann Rule, Kathryn Casey, M.W.Philps

This is well written for the average person to just pick up and read. The real situations are handled with passion, and considering the cases with where in the investigation certain scientific research may come to the aid of law enforcement. This a story of a group of scientists that do research for better understanding in helping locate bodies and help the forensics be the best it can. They are independent from law enforcement and are a non-profit group and every case is taken on only if the police have done a lot of work and the group thinks it can help in some way. I thought it was very interesting and informative.

I enjoyed following Steve Jackson's history of the group of scientists which certainly applied Sherlock Holmes deductive reasoning with combined disciplines to form a group to help stop murderers from killing innocent victims. Old cases, cold cases are never cold in the minds of families broken by murder. I found this book on kindle for the first time and enjoyed my walk with Steve and the investigators as he played Dr. Watson and chronicled the detectives at work with their respective disciplines!

As a lover of the tv show 'Forensic Files', I knew I had to read this book after seeing it on the show. This is the story of a group of scientists that put their efforts into finding clandestine graves. The book covers several cases that are each amazing! From the use of sonar equipment to blood hound dogs, this group uses all sorts of methods to reach their conclusions. It is a real group that are called into real cases to bring closure to otherwise cold cases. Amazing and addicting. I couldn't put it down for long

It took me a long time to get up the courage to tackle the art of macaron making. The methods here and flavor profiles are the real deal and yes, they are expensive to make. But the results make the complicated process and the price worth it. If your goal is trying to create some of the best macarons you'll ever eat, share, or sell, this book will get you there.As other reviewers have noted, the description of making the Italian meringue is vague in the recipes, but the introductory section of the book explains in painstaking step-by-step photos how to make each element and what it should look like. Adjustments may need to be made depending on your ingredients and environment. The recipes for the fillings alone (which of course are the best part of the macaron), is worth the price of the book. Some favorites macarons from the book include Bitter Chocolate, Americano (grapefruit), Lemon, Coffee, Salted-Butter Caramel, Infinitely Chocolate and Infinitely Vanilla.

And 3 more after that :) in love with all recipes. even most of them are expensive and kinda hard to find in regular store, little twist ingredient still gave me a lot of strong build and lovely looking macarons. and finally, i found macarons shell recipe that is not too sweet. it just right to satisfy your sweet tooth, and you absolutely can taste all the flavor even nutty taste from the shell. i love it.

An excellent book for anyone looking to expand their foundations in Macarons. I started off with "Les Petits Macarons", then graduated to Pierre Herme's book. There are some recipes that require ingredients that are exotic to the US, but still adaptable to what we have available here. Invest in the necessary equipment, familiarize yourself with the Macaron-making process, switch to Herme's preferred Italian Method, and prepare to impress everyone who samples your kitchen.

I wish I’d seen the two reviews that mention this — the kindle version is beyond crap. Sentence type overlaps so you can’t read the words/ingredients/instructions; words/chapter headings are cut off — it’s not only dreadful execution of a digital book, it’s inexcusable at this price. It’s useless.

I just purchased "Kindle" version of that book but it is unreadable. The sentences overlap, words are cut on the edges of the pages. Non of the usual Kindle features don't work such as magnifying etc. And I tried on many other devices such as Ipods and phones. It looks like a cheap scan. There is no option to receive any refunds.

Pierre Herme has done it again. This book offers tons of macaron recipes with lots of glossy photos and perfect quality paper. This book is visually stimulating and inspiring. Macarons are easy to make once you figure out your environment. If you want to impress others with your baking skills and want to give a food gift, buy this book. Macarons were created at Laduree in Paris originally. However, Pierre Herme's macarons are just pure fun and so yummy. If there is one macaron cookbook, this is the one to buy.

I tried many methods to make this elusive cookies and every time I was disappointed with the results. This is the most comprehensive and well written treatise on the process, with excellent recipes and tips. I've been fortunate to visit his boutiques and eaten his Macarons and I can attest to the accuracy of his recipes in contrast. Not in vain Mr Hermé is called “the Dior of desserts”, “the Picasso of pastry-making”.

I bought this book eventhough I know how to make french macarons already. I just want to add it on my collections. I truly love this book, great pictures and really have good filling recipes.Anyway, I can understand why the others gave it a bad reviews. For you to actually learn how to make proper macarons, either watch a step by step video (has to be very detail), or take a class (which I did). There's some major technique details that you have to learn, and reading a recipe online or books are not going to help. Even when I took the class, I wasted 3 batches when I did it on my own. And if you are seriously wants to learn, invest on a scale. U.S. measurements aren't going to cut it. You need to measure in grams to get an accurate results. And from experience, Italian meringue method is better than French or Swiss meringue method.. And I agree with "Carmen Adorno". This is a very delicate cookie so "Repetition" is the key. I always take orders from my friends because it gives me practice.

I have to say I love this book. I'm a 59 year old, working physicist and never once understood how weather works - this answered all my basic questions. I bought it used originally, so I wasn't able to use the online videos and animations - so I'm buying it again new in order to do that. I've read several other of the "big name" books on such things, having to do with numerical climate modelling, weather and climate, etc., but this one takes an integrated approach, avoiding many complex equations, so you can see the entire forest and not get lost in all the equations of this complex subject. It does tell you when it's skipping over something - so it's a great intro as well as add-on to graduate-level texts.

An OK book attempting to balance between deeper science and accessibility to under graduates

The material in the book scanning through reminded me of high school biology textbooks except in an open form to place inside of a binder. The vocabulary words are bolded, not highlighted. Overall the content appears to be easy to understand which will be great as I transition to college. I look foreword to indulging in this book.

Was this book edited? There are so many errors — information on one page conflicts with info in a box on the next; the beginning of chapter two repeats a paragraph and fails to complete the next one. And I'm just beginning chapter two. There's clearly a problem — either the authors failed to review the proofs, or the editor fell asleep on the job.
